KOLBE URGES REINSTATEMENT OF UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES IN SOUTHERN ARIZONA

'Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-AZ), member of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, sent a letter today to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff asking that the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) program be reinstated. A copy of the letter is below.

The UAV program was grounded in January due to the expiration of the Department of Defense contract. Before the grounding, UAVs proved to be a highly effective aerial surveillance system. Along with existing ground technologies, UAVs successfully assisted in viewing and apprehending illegal immigrants and smugglers coming across the Arizona border.

“By grounding this program, the federal government is turning its back on its responsibility to protect our borders,” said Rep. Kolbe. “This program is a valuable tool that can be used to strengthen our international borders. It is critical to get the UAVs back up and running, and I expect the Department of Homeland Security to act quickly to reinstate this vital program.”'
