Samsung Camera Announces Second DSLR Model to 2006 Line-Up

The New GX-1L Is the Second DSLR Model Developed Jointly With Pentax

Samsung Camera is pleased to announce a second digital SLR model for 2006—the GX-1L—an entry-level, six-megapixel model. The interchangeable lens DSLR, jointly developed with partner Pentax Corporation, features world-renowned Schneider optics in a compact, lightweight, easy-to-hold body.

“The GX-1L was designed with entry-level DSLR users in mind with its easy-to-use features and aggressive price point, says Stewart Henderson, National Marketing Manager at Samsung Camera. “The GX-1L features a host of automatic functions including Auto Sensitivity, Auto Picture Mode and a newly designed operation system. This, combined with its full range of advanced manual functions, make the GX-1L perfect for the beginning through advanced DSLR user.

For exceptional image quality and control, the GX-1L has a five-point, wide-area Auto Focus system, with a choice of AF-single or AF-continuous, providing accurate auto focusing in a variety of shooting conditions. The GX-1L also incorporates a high-precision, three-mode metering system including, 16-segment multi-pattern metering, center-weighted metering and spot metering. For additional control and creativity, users can choose from eight scene modes including Kids, Pets, Candlelight, Museum, Night Scene, Surf & Snow, Text and Sunset and several White Balance settings.

As with many high-end Samsung camera models, the GX-1L was developed for use with Schneider optics. The GX-1L uses the Schneider D-XENON 18mm~55mm lens and will be available as a body only, or bundled with the D-XENON lens as a kit. For added convenience the GX-1L can be used with many Pentax DSLR lenses and KAF2 and KAF mount lenses.

Designed for easy use, the GX-1L includes a host of automatic operations including an innovative Auto Picture mode that automatically selects the appropriate picture mode from Standard, Landscape, Macro or Action depending on the subject. When in Auto Sensitivity mode the GX-1L automatically selects the camera’s sensitivity including brightness and focal length to help reduce camera shake and ensure a steady, clear image. And, for easy selection, all major functions can be accessed from the large, easy-to-read mode dial.

The Samsung GX-1L includes a high-speed consecutive shooting mode of up to 2.8 frames per second up to eight frames in JPEG shooting and up to five frames per second when shooting in Raw Mode, allowing the user to capture a series of the subject’s action or movement.

Designed to enable easy viewing of images in all lighting conditions, the GX 1L features a large, 2.5-inch LCD monitor (210,000 pixels) and a bright, high-magnification pentaprism viewfinder offering a 96-percent field view.

The GX-1L features a compact, lightweight body measuring just 4.9 x 3.6x 2.6-inches and weighing 16-ounces* perfect for on-the-go shooting.

The Samsung GX-1L can be powered by four AA-size Lithium, Ni-MH or CR-V3 batteries.

Samsung Opto-Electronics America, Inc., Secaucus, N.J., is the U.S. subsidiary of Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd., Sungnam Kyungki-Do, Korea. Samsung Opto-Electronics markets a full line of auto focus cameras, zoom and digital cameras for the amateur as well as the professional under the Samsung brand name. Samsung GX-1L Reviews

Digital Camera Info has a first impression review of the Samsung GX-1L and writes - 'We think the GX-1L is a respectable entry level option. We say that mainly because it seems to be a Pentax, which is a good thing for a few reasons. First, it shares Pentax's durable construction, simple interface and other positive qualities. Second, it shares the Pentax lens mount, so it's compatible with a large selection of Pentax system lenses and accessories. Third, Pentax has sent other emphatic signals that they are in the digital camera business for the long hauland whether or not Samsung produces more DSLRs wont really matter to the GX-1L owner, because Pentax will prove an upgrade path of fully compatible equipment.'

Steves Digicams reviews the Samsung GX 1L Digital SLR where they write - 'Shooting performance is typical for an entry-level dSLR. From power-on till the first image was captured measured 1 second, while waking it from sleep mode took only 8/10 second. Shutter lag, the delay between depressing the shutter and capturing the image, was 1/10 second when pre-focused, and between 2/10 and 8/10 second including autofocus time for a high-contrast subject, depending on the degree of focus change. Shot-to-shot delay averaged about 4/10 second without flash; use of the internal flash extended shot-shot delay to between 1 and 4.5 seconds, depending on subject distance. Use of Red-eye reduction flash mode extended shutter lag by about 1/2 second. Continuous Shooting mode captured 5 JPEG/Best quality shots at 2.8fps, with subsequent shots at 8/10 second intervals as the camera emptied its full buffer. It required ~4 seconds to write a buffer full of JPEG/Best images to SD card before being ready to capture the next burst at full speed. The above times were observed using an OCZ 2GB 133x SD memory card, 18-55mm Pentax DA kit lens, flash off, AWB, 6M JPEG/Best image size/quality.'
