Pentax *ist DS Reviews

Steve's Digicams reviews the Pentax *ist DS and writes - 'PENTAX has downsized digital SLR photography again with the *ist DS digital SLR. Even smaller than last year's *ist D SLR, the *ist DS is one of the smallest and lightest digital SLR cameras available. Measuring just 4.9 x 3.6 x 2.6 inches and weighing under 18 ounces, it has a durable stainless-steel chassis, multi-layered electronic circuit boards and delivers superior image quality in a very compact design. Despite its size, the *ist DS offers 6.1 million effective pixels of resolution and PENTAX original image processing technology. The camera is compatible with most existing PENTAX interchangeable lenses to meet a wide range of applications and visual creativity.'

DC Views reviews thePentax istDs review

and writes - 'So this is it then, the second digital SLR by Pentax. With strong competition from big names such as Canon and Nikon we can safely say that the *ist Ds can easily hold its own among the other consumer DSLRs. With an array of advanced and user-friendly functions such as a high speed USB 2.0 connection, a large and bright pentaprism viewfinder, PictBridge and Print Image Matching options, 2.0 inch TFT monitor and 18 custom functions, it offers quick and effortless operation and easy portability thanks to its compact size.'

Megapixel reviews the Pentax *ist DS and wrties - 'The *ist DS is a very enjoyable camera to use. Its compact size and light weight make it as practical as many of the larger compacts, but its excellent pentaprism viewfinder and instantaneous response to the shutter release underline the advantage the SLR design offers without the bulk.

In our opinion, Pentax's *ist DS is a clear alternative to either the Canon Rebel/EOS 300, or the Nikon D70 for those looking to purchase an amateur digital SLR, and that choice may well be based on comfort and ease of use, more than image quality.'

DP Review has a review of the Pentax *ist DS and writes - 'The *ist DS is one of those cameras which grows on you, it's certainly compact and well put together but when you first pick it up you'd be forgiven for thinking it's a bit basic. In actual fact it packs more features and controls than most other budget SLR's and has some impressive performance to back that up. In use we found the *ist DS a very nice 'photographic tool', it always does the job, auto focus is reliable, that big viewfinder is a welcome change from some of the 'tunnel like' viewfinders found on other digital SLR's. Put it this way you're never left thinking you bought the second-best Pentax digital SLR.'

Trusted Reviews has a review of the Pentax *ist DS and writes - 'If you are considering upgrading your digital camera or buying a big zoom compact, or if you’re an existing Pentax SLR user looking to make the leap to digital, you should definitely take a look at the *ist DS. It is light, compact, well made and as easy to use as a compact, but can produce results comparable with more expensive digital SLRs. For the price it’s a bargain.'

PC Mag reviews the Pentax *ist DS and writes - 'The image quality of our test photos (all shot in RAW mode) was a mixed bag. Our daylight test shot was very good to excellent, exhibiting no fringing, artifacts, or noise. But the photo was about one-quarter of an f-stop underexposed, and a slight color shift to warm made the colors inaccurate (though appealing for portraits). Our flash test shot was similarly clean and free of any artifacts, but it was two full f-stops underexposed, making the colors muddy and unappealing. We should point out that there is something of a disconnect in the *ist DS between shooting in JPEG and RAW mode. We found that shooting in RAW format improved color, made the images crisper and clearer, and significantly boosted resolution. Despite its larger file size and slower recycle time, we suggest shooting in RAW mode whenever possible.'

Photographyblog review the 6 MegaPixel Pentax *ist DS and write - "The Pentax *ist DS offers a wealth of features, great ease of use, speedy operation and good image quality at a price point that would have been difficult to believe only a couple of years ago. The Pentax *ist DS is also an attractive proposition for anyone who is currently looking at a high-end prosumer compact digicam, and may tempt even more people to join the DSLR revolution."
