Olympus D-540/C-360 Zoom

olympus_c360_zoom.jpgThe Olympus D-540/C-360 Zoom is an entry level digital camera from Olympus that combines a 3x optical zoom with a 3 megapixel sensor.

UK/European Readers buy the Olympus C-360

Steve's Digicams reviews the Olympus D-540 and writes - 'The D-540, like its siblings, is an attractive package. The stylish exterior is constructed of a durable plastic, and is small enough to carry in a pocket or purse. Unlike its siblings, the D-540 is equipped with a sliding power switch on the back of the body rather than a sliding lens barrier. When not in use, the lens retracts into the camera body, and an aperture closes to protect the front element from damage. The camera controls are well-placed on the body and the menu system is logically-organized.'

Photography Blog reviews the Olympus C-360 and writes - 'It's amazing to think that a digital camera of this quality is now available for under Ł150. Olympus have basically taken their immensely popular Olympus µ[mju:] 410 Digital and 400 Digital models and taken some of the expense out of them, such as being waterproof, the quality metal body and the 4 megapixel sensor. What we are left with is the Olympus C-360Zoom, which retains the same overall design as it's more expensive siblings, whilst being more affordable by removing features that you may not necessarily require. '

Imaging Resource reveiws the Olympus D-540 and writes - 'The D-540 has some limitations and shortcomings (most prominently, the softness in the corners of its images, especially at short range), but these need to be weighed against the rest of its performance and its very low price point. With a list price of $199, and "street" prices generally under $170, the D-540 offers really excellent value for the money.'

Digital Camera Review reviews the Olympus D-540 and writes - 'The Olympus D-540 suits point-and-shoot consumers perfectly. It has a large 1/3.7-inch 3.2 MP CCD and significant 1.8-inch LCD monitor. The built-in flash and automatic interface helps the camera appeal to any level user in most shooting situations, although there are glaring limitations in control. Control is granted over Exposure Compensation, Flash, Macro Mode, and White Balance. This camera is straightforward in its automatic control set up; however, the on-screen menu has a layout that is tiresome at many points when setting different options. It is also important to note that during testing, the number of batteries used was astronomical - and should factor into the price somewhere, however, the camera's light weight frame, handling ease, and shooting competence should more then compensate for this to the right type of user.'

It will be known as the Olympus D-540 in North America and as the Olympus C-360 in Europe and SE Asia.
