Olympus C-770 Movie

olympus c770 movie.jpgThe Olympus C-770 continues to blur the line between still and video digital cameras. It is a 4 megapixel camera with a 10x optical zoom, but it also allows the user to record full screen quality MPEG4 movies with sound at 30 frames per second.

UK/European Readers buy the Olympus C-770

Megapixel reviews the Olympus C-770 and gives it a rating of 8.2 for functionality and 8.8 for photographic qualities.

DC Views reviews the Olympus C-770 and writes - 'In concluding terms, this isn’t the best camera from Olympus . I find the older models more appealing in performance. This one offers great image results and has a great lens power useful for faraway shots but at the same time the lens does wobble and at 0X zoom the images come out a bit fuzzy. People who want to take pictures at sports games would find this camera sufficient to their needs. Those who do product shots or take close-up shots of objects would find the lens a great aid.'

Imaging Resource reviews the Olympus C-770 and writes - ' If you're interested in long-zoom digital photography and need its unique capabilities, the C-770 definitely deserves strong consideration. '

Photoexels have a good review of the Olympus C-770.

Steve's Digicams reviews the C-770 and writes - 'Building on the success of the popular Olympus C-750UZ, the Olympus CAMEDIA C-770 Ultra Zoom is a compact, yet highly durable camera that can fit easily into any size handbag. It shares most of its features with the sibling, the Olympus C-765UZ, including the 4-megapixel imager and TruePic TURBO image processor, which improves image quality and delivers faster overall processing speeds. The C-770UZ improves on the C-765UZ with its all metal body, larger image buffer, hot shoe for external flash equipment, a built-in speaker for audio playback, and the ability to record MPEG4 movies at 640 x 480 and 30 frames per second. In automatic exposure mode, the C-770 operates as a simple point-n-shoot, but with a big difference - its powerful zoom lens. Intermediate photographers will enjoy the C-770's scene modes, and those with experience will benefit from manual, aperture-priority and shutter-priority exposure modes. It's a camera that will satisfy every skill level in your family.'

The C-770 takes great pictures outdoors and indoors. It has a novel dual tubes pop-up flash to handle the different requirements of wide-angle and telephoto coverage, and I have my best indoors pictures so far with the C-770 using its on-camera flash.

The C-770's autofocus is able to distinguish small details and lock focus on them. It is quite fast in good lighting; however, lacking an AF assist illuminator, it will hunt in low-light to lock focus.'

CNET reviews the Olympus C770 and gives it a rating of 7.9 (good).

DP Expert reviews the Olympus C-770 Movie and writes - 'As the “ultra zoom” tag on the Olympus C770 name suggests it is the lens that is the distinguishing feature of this camera. It is a whopping 10 times zoom, from 38mm (film equivalent) to 380mm. This is definitely the camera to take to the zoo. No animal is beyond its reach,

The lens is not only long, it is also fast with a maximum aperture of 2.8, dropping to a respectable f3.7 at its longest extension. To cap off its qualities the lens is also sharp and reasonably quick focussing, and as if that were not enough has a super macro function that will focus down to about 30mm.

The sensor is a 4 megapixel receptor delivering good detail and the potential for image enlargement to at least A4.

Colour balance is good but the camera tends to overexpose. As the default brightness of the LCD screen is set too high the images look washed out on review, but the screen brightness can be lowered in the menu settings and the exposure compensation method is easy, once you stumble across it by accident. You won’t find it in the totally inadequate instruction manual.'

Forget Your Camcorder: Use the Olympus C-770 Movie instead

If you don’t have room to take both your camera and your camcorder on holiday this year, then the Olympus C-770 Movie is the answer to your problem. The 4 million pixel digital camera not only allows extremely versatile shooting with a powerful 10x optical zoom, it also records full-screen quality MPEG4 movies with sound. Available from April 2004, RRP will be £499.99 [inc VAT]. For stockist information call 0800 072 0070 or go to www.olympus.co.uk.

This camera is the perfect holiday companion for the seasoned traveller; the compact C-770 Movie doesn’t simply take superb digital shots, it also boasts a full-screen movie recording capability of 30 frames per second in MPEG4 quality - one of the most advanced of any existing digital cameras to date. The extraordinary picture quality also allows full television screen presentations.

The new flagship in the Olympus Ultra Zoom range features a bright (f2.8 – 3.7) 10x optical zoom lens which comprises eleven elements arranged in seven groups. In addition, it includes two aspherical lenses to reduce distortion, plus an ED element which helps to minimise chromatic aberration, an effect that often occurs when shooting in the tele-setting. In combination with a 4 million pixel CCD, this high precision optical system ensures pictures of superb quality, even when printed in larger sizes.

This model also offers a broad range of shooting modes including Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Full Manual settings, allowing you to create your own individual images. The camera’s range of scene programs (Portrait, Self Portrait, Night Scene, Sports, Landscape and Landscape with Portrait) proves extremely convenient when there is less time for manual adjustments.

Because the C-770 Movie complies with the PictBridge standard, direct printing can be carried out with compatible printers, eliminating the need for a PC. However, the USB 2.0 AutoConnect interface, means that pictures and movies can be downloaded quickly and easily to the computer.

Two software packages are included for handling the files;
• CAMEDIA Master 4.2SE software allows easy optimising, editing and managing of the image files
• Ulead VideoStudio7 SE Basic to edit and watch the MPEG4 movies on your computer.
