DCRP reviews the HP Photosmart R727 and recommends - 'The R727 is packed with innovative features -- too many to list here. Some of my favorites include Adaptive Lighting, in-camera panorama stitching, Photosmart Express (photo sharing), and a redeye reduction system that really works. You won't find many manual controls on this camera, though -- in fact, there's just one: white balance. That means that the camera makes its own decisions, which isn't always the best, as the night shot illustrated. The built-in Photosmart Express feature lets you e-mail, print, and share your photos by tagging photos on the camera in advance. Connect the camera to your Mac or PC and the photos are sent to the appropriate destination. The software side is a bit clunky, with a sluggish web-based interface and the fact that e-mailed photos aren't really sent to the recipient -- they go to Snapfish instead. The camera has a decent movie mode, though the frame rate is lower than on most of the competition.'

The HP Photosmart R727 takes pictures of excellent quality and has a rechargable battery! Within the camera itself are many features such as filtering, borders, and special effects that are fun to play with. I found the video feature really amazing though the quality is not spectacular in video mode... you are able to freeze frames and save them... and you are able to record twenty minutes of video footage in one shot with this camera. The saved frames are not as good of pictures as ones taken in other modes.
It was a little frustrating trying to figure out how to take pictures of my child so that his eyes would be opened in the shot. After making some adjustments with the flash and ISO settings I have been able to get some nice pictures.
About the red eye reduction... The function within the camera itself was not satisfactory to me. It leaves two little black dots where the subjects pupils should be. Solid black dots... and sometimes not quite centered... so I turned this feature off and use the Photosmart Premier software that came with the camera to adjust the pictures on my computer. The software does an excellent job keeping the light in their eyes while removing the redness.
I was not impressed with the photo sharing software, however the Photosmart Premier program does offer some interesting options for creating pages of arranged photos for an album, and acceptable photo editing tools.
I am really just beginning to explore my talents in photography and discovering how to best use the features of this camera. I'm quite happy with it and would have to say it's well worth the price I paid (about $200) and I won't be endlessly replacing batteries or purchasing film. I just plug the camera in to my pc with the data cable provided... review all my photos on my computer, make any adjustments with the software provided and print, save to disk, e-mail, or upload!
This camera is perfect for begginners and good enough to take profesional quality photos. Compact, durable, rechargable, and easy to use.
