Canon PowerShot A700 News Release Extract

A new addition to the line-up of PowerShot A-Series digital cameras, the PowerShot A700 model features six-megapixel resolution together with a retractable 6x 35-210mm optical zoom lens (35mm equivalent). The A700 model incorporates 22 shooting modes from fully automatic to fully manual to achieve optimum results for any photographic application. The new camera is also compatible with optional wide angle and telephoto lens converters, as well as a close-up lens and a wireless flash unit.

Canon-Powershot-A700-Back

The A700 model offers ISO equivalent speed ratings ranging from 80 to 800 with dramatically less noise at ISO 400 than previous PowerShot models. The camera also features a large 2.5-inch 115,000-pixel LCD color monitor, making it easier than ever to review captured images and even to do limited in-camera image editing and retouching such as a new Face Brightener function to help compensate for backlit images. The PowerShot A700 digital camera will be available in March for an estimated selling price of $349.99(2).

DIGIC II Image Processing Technology- Hi-Speed USB 2.0

True to the PowerShot tradition, the A-series cameras have many of the latest advances in Canon technology including the proprietary DIGIC II imaging processor. The processor enhances picture definition, vibrancy, and quality, while helping increase the speed of the cameras' startup, autofocus, shutter response, playback, and image processing speed while reducing power consumption by 35 percent compared to the original DIGIC chip. Consumers benefit from accelerated image transfer speed (when used with a USB 2.0 compatible computer, printer, or other peripheral), thanks to the inclusion of a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port(3). The USB 2.0 port is backwards compatible (at no increased speed) with computers featuring standard USB 1.1 connections.

New Features and Special Effects

All of the new models offer a new widescreen 16:9 ratio resolution setting that facilitates creating panoramic-style prints. Additionally, all PowerShot models support 23 languages (now including Thai and Arabic). The new cameras have an improved direct printing function that permits greater flexibility in print settings, including a face brightener setting for backlit photos.

Canon also enhanced the 'My Colors' mode found in the new PowerShot line. Where previously, users could only enable 'My Colors' while shooting, the current iteration permits captured images to be retouched as well, without the need for special software applications or tools. Available My Color playback modes include Vivid Blue, Vivid Green, and Vivid Red; lighter and darker skin tones, as well as options for creating black & white, sepia, neutral and positive film effects. A color accent setting turns all colors but the one selected by the user to monochrome and the color swap mode enables users to alter specific colors in an image by sampling another color from the same image or any other image on the camera's memory card. So, 'My Colors' provides PowerShot users with an incredible range of creative photo effects that can be accessed directly in the camera with no need for post-processing in a computer.

Direct Print

Like all PowerShot digital cameras, these newest additions to the A-series work seamlessly with Canon's petite SELPHY Compact Photo Printers - an essential PowerShot accessory. Consumers simply connect their PowerShot digital camera to a SELPHY printer - such as the SELPHY CP510 and CP710 models. Press the lighted Print/Share button, and within seconds(4), images emerge. Presto! It is that simple. Canon's SELPHY Compact Photo Printers are PictBridge compatible. They work with PictBridge enabled digital cameras and offer excellent image quality and ease-of-use, especially when paired with a Canon digital camera. At 28 cents-per-print(5), printing photos directly from a digital camera is both easy and affordable.

Canon will debut it latest PowerShot A-series digital cameras in its booth (#3509) during the Photo Marketing Association (PMA) exhibit in Orlando, Fla., from February 26th - March 1st, 2006.

Canon PowerShot A700 Reviews

DP Review has posted a review of the Canon PowerShot A700 point and shoot digital camera where they are pretty impressed and give it a 'recommended' rating. They write - 'At the moment the A700 sits pretty much in a class of its own; there are equally compact, similarly-priced cameras with big zooms on the market, some (such as the Panasonic LZ5) with the added benefit of image stabilization. But none offers the level of photographic control or the added versatility of add-on lenses (and flash), and my experiences with the A700 would indicate that you can get away without image stabilization at focal lengths of up to 210mm equiv. in most daytime shooting situations. Because of this (and if you can live without the tilting screen) I'd certainly choose the A700 over the A610 or A620.'

Neo Camera has posted a review of the Canon A700 where they write - 'This camera, while not perfect, turns out to be an excellent one. It is suitable for general photography both as a point-and-shoot and for various creative photography subjects. Image quality and versatility of this camera is surprisingly good. Noise levels are low for a compact camera, however the Fuji Finepix E900 is currently the only compact digital camera that beats it. Image sharpness is excellent and so are exposure, shot-to-shot speeds and focus speeds. Color is generally quite accurate and vibrant, except for the occasional problem in very bright areas of images. The Canon Powershot A700 does have other downsides but it scores where it counts for a photographic tool. Indoor and action photography are really the weak points of this camera due to its slow flash-recycling and LCD update latency in continuous drive mode.'

Steves Digicams reviews the Canon Powershot A700 and writes - 'The Canon PowerShot A700 is an awesome consumer digital camera. One that I would highly recommend to anyone in the market for a fair priced model with loads of user friendly features and outstanding image quality and performance. Its 6x optical zoom will blow away the competition's typical 3x zoom, and with 6-megapixels, you can create beautiful 13x19-inch or larger prints. With an MSRP of only US$349, it offers an excellent value and is sure to be a very popular model this year.'

Digital Photography Interface has a review of the Canon PowerShot A700 where the reviewer writes - 'The Canon PowerShot A700 has everything an entry-level budget camera should have and more. Its two main features - 6x optical zoom and full manual controls - set it apart from competition. The A700 is probably meant to be a camera for beginners who eventually learn and use the controls of the A700, or even those who want a compact camera with manual controls. Okay, the A700 is not tiny but it's compact enough to fit into larger pockets or hang around your neck. The A700 has a full set of manual controls and expandability with a variety of accessories, including filters and conversion lenses.'

Lets Go Digital reviews the Canon PowerShot A700 where they give it a rating of 78% and write - 'May the results of our tests be clear. The remarks made about the slightly more negative sides of the Canon PowerShot A700 are generously outweighed - and even erased - by the camera's strong points and assets. The Canon PowerShot A700 is an excellent digital camera with major potential. A camera that suits a very broad group of consumers, not to mention a perfect first step to a more advanced camera. Its compact size and light weight encourage the user to carry the camera along often. The Canon A700 evolved from a strong concept, and will without question continue the success of the Canon PowerShot A series digital cameras.'

Imaging Resource reviews the Canon PowerShot A700 and writes - 'Featuring a 6x optical zoom, 6.0-megapixel CCD, automatic, partial, or fully manual exposure control, and a wide range of preset shooting modes, the PowerShot A700 is another fine addition to Canon's A-series of digital cameras. Built on the same long-tested design as many A-series predecessors, the Canon A700 offers a lot in its compact package. Its combination of automatic and manual features make it very approachable for novices, but interesting for experienced users, the net result being a camera that will satisfy a broad range of interests and provide a good path for novice users to expand their photographic horizons as their experience grows. The 6x zoom lens is quite easy to hand-hold under reasonably bright lighting, but as the light fades, the A700's lack of image stabilization will come to be more of a factor. I'd also like to see it equipped with a more accurate optical viewfinder, and its image noise at ISO 800 was on the high side. Bottom line though, this is a camera that will meet the needs of the average consumer very well, and one that's particularly well suited to situations where both novice and experienced users need to share the use of the same camera.'

Digital Cameras Blog has posted their review of the Canon Powershot A700 where they write - 'Overall this is a pretty decent camera. If you don’t mind the long wait after taking a flash picture or the cheap feel to it, then it really does have some great features. The 6x optical zoom, the video mode, and the 2.5 inch LCD are all absolutely wonderful. It seems to get in focus really quickly as I never had one problem with the focus taking a while to pick up. It has 20 different shooting modes including portrait, landscape, night scene, snow, indoor, among others. It does take AA batteries as opposed to a rechargable battery pack, so keep that in consideration. '

Cameras.co.uk has a review of the Canon Powershot A700 and writes, "From the tests I carry out Canon digital cameras produce the sharpest photos. The Powershot A700 underlines this position with a series of very sharp shots. ... For close up photography the macro shot is above average without being one of the very best. The image is sharp and clear. ... The Canon Powershot A700 does not come cheap. It is more expensive than a number of digital cameras with a 10x optical zoom lens. Putting aside the price if picture quality is important this camera will not let you down. Photos are as sharp as I have managed to take. Colours are strong as well. It also has all the features you need if you enjoy photography. All in all the Powershot A700 makes a compelling case to be bought. Recommended. "

ePhotoZine has a review up of the Canon Powershot A700 and writes, "There are two different image quality levels on this camera, Superfine, Fine and Normal. All images in this review were taken on Fine and at maximum resolution so that I could see what the camera is capable of producing using the typical settings. The image produced by the Powershot A700 compares well to the competition. The image is sharp and full of detail, although it is just a little less so than the image from the Fuji. Images taken at the two lowest sensitivities are clean and virtually free of noise, At ISO200 the noise levels have increased, but they are still well within acceptable levels. Noise is more prominent at the two highest sensitivity settings, which will reduce quality at larger print sizes. ... Great image quality in good light, coupled with good handling and a very useful 6x zoom lens definitely make this camera worthy of consideration."

Digital Camera Review has posted a review of the Canon Powershot A700 where they write - 'I enjoyed using the A700. It's a very easy camera to just carry around to pull out to grab a quick snapshot. The image quality is excellent and having the 6x optical zoom is, in my opinion, worth the extra $50 compared to the Canon Powershot A540. Flash performance (except for cycle time) was good and battery life was average, so make sure you carry a spare set of batteries. I would have liked to see more resolution in the LCD, but it's not a deal breaker. If you're looking for a digital camera that's easy to use, takes great pictures, and has a little more zoom, I highly recommend the Canon Powershot A700.'

DigiCam Review have reviewed the Canon Powershot A700 where they write - "I've been using the Canon Powershot A700 for nearly 6 months now and taken thousands of photos with it - this camera has consistently produced excellent results and been able to take great photos in every situation, including WWE shows! Image quality is excellent with great colours, and the 6x optical zoom lens is an excellent feature, especially as the camera is not much bigger than a lot of other 3x optical zoom lens cameras. If you want a good optical zoom, but don't want the bulk normally associated with ultra zoom cameras, then the A700 (and A710 IS) is an excellent option. The camera only takes 2 AA batteries, yet battery life is still very good, and has the added bonus of allowing you to buy replacement batteries in any local shop, no matter where in the world you are. The manual white balance will let you get great macro photos, and full manual controls mean you can take some great night photos. The only thing missing from this camera is image stabilisation - thankfully Canon have released the A710 IS, and if it's as good as the A700, then it's bound to be excellent! The A700 is Highly Recommended! Although if you can't find it anymore, then go out and buy an A710 IS."
