Out of the range of cameras announced by Canon today, the Canon PowerShot A430 is the baby of them all. Having said that it's got features that go way beyond my own first digital camera!
The Canon PowerShot A430 features a 4 megapixel sensor and a 4x Optical Zoom lens.
It shoots at up to 2.3 frames per second and has an array of 14 shooting modes.
The Canon PowerShot A430 takes SD cards and is PictBridge compatable (USB 2.0).

DIGIC II Image Processing Technology- Hi-Speed USB 2.0
True to the PowerShot tradition, the A-series cameras have many of the latest advances in Canon technology including the proprietary DIGIC II imaging processor. The processor enhances picture definition, vibrancy, and quality, while helping increase the speed of the cameras' startup, autofocus, shutter response, playback, and image processing speed while reducing power consumption by 35 percent compared to the original DIGIC chip. Consumers benefit from accelerated image transfer speed (when used with a USB 2.0 compatible computer, printer, or other peripheral), thanks to the inclusion of a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port(3). The USB 2.0 port is backwards compatible (at no increased speed) with computers featuring standard USB 1.1 connections.
New Features and Special Effects
All of the new models offer a new widescreen 16:9 ratio resolution setting that facilitates creating panoramic-style prints. Additionally, all PowerShot models support 23 languages (now including Thai and Arabic). The new cameras have an improved direct printing function that permits greater flexibility in print settings, including a face brightener setting for backlit photos.
Canon also enhanced the 'My Colors' mode found in the new PowerShot line. Where previously, users could only enable 'My Colors' while shooting, the current iteration permits captured images to be retouched as well, without the need for special software applications or tools. Available My Color playback modes include Vivid Blue, Vivid Green, and Vivid Red; lighter and darker skin tones, as well as options for creating black & white, sepia, neutral and positive film effects. A color accent setting turns all colors but the one selected by the user to monochrome and the color swap mode enables users to alter specific colors in an image by sampling another color from the same image or any other image on the camera's memory card. So, 'My Colors' provides PowerShot users with an incredible range of creative photo effects that can be accessed directly in the camera with no need for post-processing in a computer.
Direct Print
Like all PowerShot digital cameras, these newest additions to the A-series work seamlessly with Canon's petite SELPHY Compact Photo Printers - an essential PowerShot accessory. Consumers simply connect their PowerShot digital camera to a SELPHY printer - such as the SELPHY CP510 and CP710 models. Press the lighted Print/Share button, and within seconds(4), images emerge. Presto! It is that simple. Canon's SELPHY Compact Photo Printers are PictBridge compatible. They work with PictBridge enabled digital cameras and offer excellent image quality and ease-of-use, especially when paired with a Canon digital camera. At 28 cents-per-print(5), printing photos directly from a digital camera is both easy and affordable.
Canon will debut it latest PowerShot A-series digital cameras in its booth (#3509) during the Photo Marketing Association (PMA) exhibit in Orlando, Fla., from February 26th - March 1st, 2006.

Steves Digicams posts a review of the Canon Powershot A430 where they write - 'The overall image quality is excellent for such an affordably priced camera. In fact it sometimes rivals that of more expensive cameras with similar resolution. You can choose from several image sizes (Large: 2272 x 1704, Middle 1: 1600 x 1200, Middle 2: 1024 x 768, Small: 640 x 480, Wide: 2272 x 1280, and Postcard Date Imprint Mode: 1600 x 1200.) And, the quality is also selectable between Normal, Fine and SuperFine. The better the quality the less compression of the image. More compression may equal a smaller file size, but you will see a difference in you images. We've found that the most popular settings are either the default Large Fine mode or Large SuperFine, which is what we used. Either of these modes will produce awesome pictures and beautiful prints.'
CNET has posted a review of the Canon PowerShot A430 and gives it a rating of 6.8 out of 10 ('good') and writes - 'Canon's 4-megapixel PowerShot A430 is a bit of an oddity these days. New 4-megapixel cameras have all but gone the way of vinyl records and slide projectors. With even bargain-bin digital cameras sporting 5-megapixel sensors, why is Canon releasing the A430? The Canon PowerShot A430 is an upgraded version of the bottom-of-the-line 3-megapixel PowerShot A410, which it replaces as Canon's cheap, no-frills digital camera. In that role, the camera actually performs pretty well. Despite some irritating image-quality problems, the A430 is a nice, simple point-and-shoot camera with solid performance and a decent feature set.'
PC Mag reviews the Canon PowerShot A430 and writes - 'With a 4-megapixel sensor and a 4X optical zoom lens, the Canon PowerShot A430 ($179.95 list) is a really nice buy for an inexpensive, compact digital camera. The lens offers a 5.4mm-to-21.6mm range (equivalent to a 35mm lens with a 39mm-to-156mm zoom) and corresponding maximum f-stops of f/2.8 to f/5.8. But I wish Canon would offer more ease-of-use and help features in the menus; this would be a big help to beginners who never crack the camera's manual.'
Imaging Resource has posted their review of the Canon PowerShot A430 where they write - 'Featuring a 4.0-megapixel CCD, 4x optical zoom, automatic exposure control with a wide range of preset shooting modes, and a real bargain price, the PowerShot A430 does a great job of holding up Canon's sterling reputation at the low end of their line. Built on the same long-tested design as many A-series predecessors, the Canon A430 delivers a lot of features, great image quality, and tremendous value in a compact package designed for novices (no matter the age). I'd like to see it equipped with a (much) more accurate optical viewfinder, but other than that, what this camera does, it does very well. With an initial suggested retail price of just $179 (and widely available online for much less), the A430 is an especially good bargain for an all-around consumer model. Overall, a solid replacement for the previous A410 model, and one of the best cameras on the market in its price range.'
ComputerActive has a review of the Canon PowerShot A430 and writes, "Canon’s new PowerShot A430, available in a choice of four colours, is an inexpensive way to go digital. A budget price hasn’t meant a lack of features, and it’s a surprise to see a better than average 4x optical zoom included here. ... Inevitably there are compromises, like the plastic body, wider build (when compared with IXUS cameras further up the range), noisy zoom mechanism and 1.8in screen that’s also tiny, though at least there’s an optical viewfinder for shot composition. Light sensitivity is capped at ISO400, adjustable manually. ... perhaps the only slip up on Canon’s part was to not make the PowerShot A430 dust and waterproof."
