Olympus Stylus 400/mju(µ) 400

olympus-stylus-400.gifThe Olympus Stylus 400/mju(µ) 400 is a stylish 4.07 megapixel camera that is sure to stand out from the crowd going snap happy at the couple cutting the cake at thousands of weddings across the globe. It was released last year and has been very popular.

It is known as the Olympus Stylus 400 in North America and as mju (µ) 400 Digital in Europe and SE Asia.

The Stylus 400/mju(µ) 400 is another of Olympus’s sliding cover cameras (the cover doubles as an on/off button). As the cover opens a 3x Optical zoom lens is revealed. It takes XD memory cards and has a 1.5 inch LCD screen.

The Olympus Stylus 400/mju(µ) 400 is a weather proof camera with all slots for cards and batteries sealed with rubber. It won’t stop water if you were to take it diving, but it will keep rain out in most circumstances.

The camera takes beautifully exposed pictures in well lit and outdoor situations but has been known to be a little less competent in low lit and indoor situations (although still takes decent shots) due to a built in flash that is not too powerful. Also macro mode isn’t quite as good as other cameras of a similar price.

Overall this camera is impressive if you are wanting a good quality, stylish and robust camera.

The 8th wonder: the 8 Megapixel Olympus C-8080 WIDE ZOOM

Olympus is delighted to introduce the 8 megapixel C-8080 WIDE ZOOM digital camera. The C-8080 WZ delivers an outstanding performance and confidently measures up to a digital SLR in its class. Packed with features and offering a wide angle, 5x zoom lens, sunshine LCD technology and a short shutter release lag time, the C-8080 WZ is capable of even the most demanding of creative photography. Housed in a black, robust magnesium alloy body, the C-8080 WIDE ZOOM is due for release in April 2004, RRP Ł899.99 [inc VAT]. For stockist information call free phone 0800 072 0070 or visit www.olympus.co.uk.

The C-8080 WZ is equipped with a 5x, f2.4-3.5 zoom lens to draw the maximum performance from the camera’s 8 megapixel CCD. The high quality optics include 14 high quality lenses arranged in five groups and two aspherical lenses to reduce distortion. In addition, three ED elements help minimise chromatic aberration, an effect that often occurs when shooting in telephoto setting. The focal length extends from 7.1 to 35.6mm, equivalent 28mm to 140mm on a 35mm camera.

The C-8080 WZ features an electronic viewfinder to guarantee precise framing of a shot. It boasts a resolution of 240,000 pixels, an image refresh rates of 60fps and a delay of a mere 50ms. Furthermore, it displays all activated settings so that the photographer doesn’t need to take their eye from a subject when shooting.

In addition to a release time lag of just 0.3 sec, rapid data processing also dictates very fast exposure rates. For example, 1.6 frames (each with 8 million pixels) can be shot per second in the sequence shooting and auto bracketing settings in any JPEG mode.

Olympus UK Press Release 12/02/04Despite the rapid development and optimisation of digital cameras in recent years, when it comes to LCD monitors, there remains one frustrating problem - in bright light, it’s often impossible to see the picture on the monitor. The C-8080 WZ boasts a new sunshine LCD to put an end to this. Even under dazzling spotlights or in the summer sun, it displays bright, clear images, to allow the photographer to frame and check their shots accurately. The monitor can also be tilted down 20 degrees or up to 90 degrees to provide a clear view of a subject when shooting from a difficult perspective.

The C-8080 WZ holds its own against many digital SLR models when it comes to precision metering technology too. Alongside highly accurate light and white balance metering systems, the C-8080 WZ features a dual AF system. A TTL contrast detection system is combined with an additional passive metering system, which uses a second sensor to calculate the phase difference and thus the subject’s distance. The camera then fine-tunes the readings for optimum sharpness. The user can select a range of focusing options: iESP, spot autofocus (the metering spot can be placed in 13 different positions in the frame), full time AF and, of course, manual focus.

Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Full Manual modes provide full creative scope to achieve the image required. To capture moving pictures, the C-8080 WIDE ZOOM offers a movie recording option with sound. The sequence’s duration is limited only by the memory card’s capacity. Both xD-Picture cards or CompactFlash cards may be used with the C-8080 WZ and thanks to an USB 2.0 AutoConnect interface, all results can be downloaded quickly and easily to a PC.

The C-8080 WZ is also compatible with a wide range of CAMEDIA system accessories and has a bayonet mount system to allow the quick and effortless addition of tele and wide angle lens converters. A hot shoe connection allows the use of high performance external flash units for professional lighting effects.

This C-8080 WZ is packaged with the CAMEDIA Master 4.2 software. Perfect for optimising, editing and managing digital files, this updated version of the software allows RAW format images to be converted according to the user’s requirements. This offers ambitious photographers the opportunity to “develop” shots using the optimal PC settings.

The C-8080 WIDE ZOOM – main features
- 8.0 mega pixels
- Magnesium alloy body
- 5x optical zoom (equiv. 28 – 140mm on 35mm camera), f2.4-3.5

Olympus C-740

The 3.2 Megapixel Olympus C-740 is a unique looking camera that is sure to get noticed. It has a 10x optical zoom (a nice change from the 3x zoom on most medium quality digital cameras lately) and comes with 12 in built shooting modes.

Byte Sector has a great review of the C-740 and rates it highly, giving it an overall rating of 90%. They write:

'This camera is excellent for its price. Most cameras with such a powerful lens can cost a lot more. This camera however, costs the same as many other cameras in the market consisting of less powerful lenses. The camera also falls a bit short when it comes to the image quality due to its 3.2 Mega pixel resolution. The fact that it offers an acceptable pixel capacity and such a great lens as a combination makes it a great camera for an intermediate or professional user. This camera isn’t recommended for a novice user by us, but if you are willing to put in the time and dedication; this camera is a great learning experience for a beginner as well. '

Also available for the Olympus C-740 is an Underwater Housing.

Olympus Stylus 300

Olympus-stylus-300.jpg

The Olympus Stylus 300 is a nice looking 3 megapixel camera with a 3x Optical Zoom lens.

It is reviewed at Olympus Stylus 300 - Byte Sector. Excerpt:

The Stylus 300 makes it easy to take pictures anytime, anywhere. We found that this camera is a great unit for point and shoot photos, but it does not give the user much control over advanced options such as aperture size and shutter speed. The camera produces clear, crisp photos each and every time. We again found that the Stylus 300 does not capture audio while in movie mode. This is a fairly huge downside for this camera since many point and shoot photographers would like to take video clips. Overall, this is a great camera that makes taking pictures very easy, but is not as complete as it could be.

Check out what rating they gave the Olympus Stylus 300 here.

Olympus E20 - Reader Review

cover

Rolf Bertram Reviews the Olympus E20

The Olympus E20 has plenty of buttons everywhere, which are very intuitive for all everyday functions. The menues are only needed for general settings. Adding one of these microscope eypiece rubber things on the viewfinder makes it very comfortable to use without daylight spilling in. Manual zoom makes it very fast. Optional manual focusing is good for fireworks photos.

A DigiPower DPS9000 LiIon battery fits under the camera and attaches to the tipod thread. This allows around 200-400 RAW shots. A 512MB CF card + a 128MB SM card hold a total of 64 RAW pics, which will fit on one single CDR for backup. The CCD sensor has an additional dead pixel every few months (in my camera at least). So you have to run the dead pixel detection routine, which memorizes the dead pixels.

An additional Raynox DCR-FE180PRO add on lens gets you nearly fisheye wide angle with still excellent picture quality. One annoying thing is the slow write speed. The internal memory can only buffer 3 RAW pics, and writing to me! The memory card takes around 40 seconds per picture. This is very very slow for action and portrait photography, but does not matter much for still life or landscape. Long term exposure gives excellent pictures up to 1 minute and still o.k. pictures at the maximum of 8 minutes. The Olympus E20 is packed with so many functions that I still did not try all of them, but once in a while I use a new function and I am always amazed how intuitive this camera was designed.

Olympus C-5060wz

Digital Camera Resource Page gives a good review of the Olympus C-5060wz

Their review of the Olympus C-5060wz is incredibly comprehensive and I'd recommend reading it in full. But here is the 'high and low lights'.

What I liked:
- Good photo quality, though images a little noisy
- Tons of manual controls
- Very nice, wide-angle 4X zoom lens
- Two histograms to choose from
- AF-assist lamp AND passive AF system!
- Handy RAW data edit feature
- Useful flip-up, rotating LCD display
- Customizable buttons and menus
- Handy My Mode feature lets you store favorite settings to spot on mode dial
- Super macro mode lets you get 3 cm from your subject
- Powerful battery
- VGA movie mode
- Hot shoe for external flash
- Supports add-on lenses, underwater case, battery grip

What I didn't care for:
- Images are too noisy at default settings
- Redeye
- Controls can be intimidating to new users
- Slowest shutter speeds only available in full manual mode
- Full manual only on CD

PC Mag give this camera a 4 star rating (and title of Editors Choice for Midrange Digital Cameras) and describe it with the words 'it just about has it all: good ergonomics, solid performance, excellent image quality, and all the professional features you could want.'

Olympus C-750

olympus c750.jpg

The Olympus C-750 is a 4 megapixel digital camera. Its 10x optical zoom lens sets it apart from many other digital cameras.

It has a hot shoe for an external flash, has a metal casing and the capability to record sound in movie mode and remote control. These features set it apart from the earlier released 3.2MP C-740.

Olympus C-5000 Zoom

olympus c5000.jpgTheOlympus C-5000 Zoom is a 5.0 megapixel camera with a 3x optical zoom lens (equivalent to a 38-114mm SLR lens). It has a 1.8 inch LDC display. It comes with a hot shoe for an external flash and a good array of exposure modes.

While its perhaps not the most attractive (or small) camera I’ve seen for the variety of features it offers its an affordable camera. Its got a few less features than its big brother – the C-5000 but should suit the average user quite well.
