Press Release

Epson Launches the World's First Rangefinder Digital Camera

Seiko Epson Corporation ("Epson") has launched the Epson Rangefinder Digital Camera R-D1, the world's first rangefinder digital camera, in partnership with Cosina Corporation.

Technical collaboration
Epson has helped transform the world of photo printing into the digital world by developing inkjet printers and other digital photo printing technologies. Among the critical technologies behind the stunning quality of Epson's digitally rendered photos is digital image processing—technology for optimizing digital data as a high-quality photo image. Digital image processing technology is already being used in Epson's printer drivers, high-resolution scanners and other input and output devices, but Epson had been looking for new potentially intriguing applications for it, as well. It was while scouting the possibilities that Epson met up with Cosina, a company that can boast some of the world's foremost original optical technologies.

Cosina has developed outstanding original optics technologies in the production of camera lenses while still maintaining a rigorous fidelity to the historic photography heritage. Epson felt that if the companies were to use the rangefinder camera platform—a platform that is being left in the wake of progress toward the digital age—and if they were to merge Epson's digital image processing technology with Cosina's advanced optics technology, they might be able to discover some completely new creative photographic possibilities. This idea led to collaboration between the two companies, with engineers from both sides paying uncompromising attention to detail during product development. Thus was born the R-D1

The R-D1 dares to swim against the high tide of fully automatic electronic digital cameras. It is a digital camera that still manages to feel like a traditional manual camera, for people who appreciate the peculiar satisfaction that comes with the ability to use an analog camera well. In other words, the R-D1 is simultaneously a state-of-the-art digital camera that offers outstanding performance and image quality, and a throwback that offers camera buffs the look and feel of a vintage film camera, as well as the joy of skillfully using their camera as a tool.

Digital camera firsts
Among many digital camera firsts, the R-D1 is the world's first rangefinder digital camera. A rangefinder is a type of camera that has a built-in device for measuring distance based on the principles of triangulation. The photographer focuses the camera by superimposing two slightly different views of a scene with the rangefinder. In general, compared to an auto-focus system, performance does not change even if lenses are swapped, and focus can be achieved quickly, accurately and with a light level that is nearly the same as the unaided eye, even in dimly lit locations. In addition, since the field of view is not blocked by the action of a shutter as it is with a single-lens reflex camera, the photographer will not miss the decisive moment.

The R-D1 is also the world's first digital camera to accept Leica L- and M-mounts*2. As such, it offers a new platform that links the future with the past. A huge number of lens types — more than 200 — have been created and sold over the long history of photography. This camera gives twenty-first century photographers a way to use these famed lenses from our photographic heritage. The new camera gives photographers the chance to develop a new cult of photography by allowing them to resurrect their familiar old lenses in a digital world.

The R-D1 also uses the world's first 1x viewfinder, enabling photographers to view scenes – including panoramas - through the camera as if they were looking at scenes using their naked eyes. The camera also has the advantage of improved focus precision compared to low magnification optical finders.

Epson = Photo
With "Epson = Photo" as its watchword, Epson is committed to bringing color to life and to the way people communicate, by aspiring to create new possibilities that expand the horizons of the digital photo market and by suggesting new ways to enjoy digital photography using advanced digital image processing technology.

The R-D1 will be exhibited at the 2004 Photo Expo, which will be held from March 19-21 at the Tokyo Big Sight.

*1 Epson Rangefinder Digital Camera R-D1 is a trademark of Seiko Epson Corp.
*2 The L-mount is adaptor-compatible.

Press Release

Ricoh launches the Caplio RX - a slim 28mm wide-angle digital camera with the world’s fastest shutter response* and quick start-up time

Tokyo,March 4th, 2004. Ricoh is extremely pleased to announce the release of the Caplio RX, a slim wide-angle 28mm digital camera that commands the world’s fastest shutter response and quick start-up time while delivering outstanding image quality and user-friendly functionality at a price well within reach to consumers.

The Caplio RX is quicker, slimmer, lighter and even easier to use than its wide-angle lens predecessor the Caplio G4wide, which made its debut in September of 2003. Relentless in their pursuit to build faster and more versatile digital cameras, the Caplio RX marks a tremendous leap forward for the Ricoh organization.

Caplio RX’s 28mm-100mm (35mm film camera equivalent format) wide zoom has a marvelous 75-degree angle of view – compared with just 62 degrees on conventional 35mm digital cameras. Consumers can take much improved landscape images, group photos and a host of other wide-angle opportunities that preserve more information onto a single image than the limited range of 35mm cameras.

Built with incredible speed, the Caplio RX boasts the world’s fastest shutter response time at only 0.12 seconds and extremely quick start-up time clocked at a mere 0.9 seconds – an impressive 50% improvement from the Caplio G4wide’s 1.8sec start-up ability. Occasions such as when a newborn baby shows off that tiny little smile or a rare antique car that happens to go whizzing by, owners of the Caplio RX can feel confident in capturing images of these precious moments in time. Too often conventional digital cameras disappoint consumers with their slow shutter response and start-up times – this latest digital camera from Ricoh certainly appears to have put an end to these problems.

The Caplio RX is also extremely portable and comfortable to hold. Weighing in at just 170 grams** and only 29mm thick, its sleek and curvy aluminum-alloy body feels nice in hand and fits perfectly in a shirt pocket. The Caplio RX’s stunning picture-taking abilities abound with a robust 3.24-megapixel CCD that includes a vastly improved image processor ensuring colours look sharper and cleaner even in large printed formats. Furthermore, its 3.6x optical plus 3.4x digital zoom delivers an outstanding combination of 12.2x zoom giving photographers plenty of opportunity to zoom into the tiniest details within any image.

Continuing to lead the field with its macro mode abilities, Ricoh’s Caplio RX takes gorgeous 1cm macros that bring out the very finest of sparkling jewelry and beautiful blooming flowers. Users can even operate a flash at a mere 9cm from objects without any whiteout effect.

“Clearly we have come a very long way in our digital camera making history. The release of the Caplio RX makes us all here at Ricoh extremely proud,” beams Mr. Katsunori Nakata, the General Manager of Ricoh’s Marketing Office. ”The Caplio RX is an absolute pleasure to operate. With it consumers have the shooting flexibility of a 28mm wide angle lens, the world’s fastest shutter response time of just 0.12 seconds, a 3.24 megapixel CCD that delivers amazingly clear photos and on top of that it’s as slim as a typical mobile phone and can shoot over four hundred photos on a single charge!*** The Caplio RX is truly a magical digital camera that’s made for people who simply want more out of life.”

* As of March 4th, 2004 for all auto focus digital camera
** Without battery
*** Up to 400 shots under normal usage conditions (with 50% flash and zoom usage, LCD on, 30 seconds between shots, reviews of all photos).

Main Features

28mm zoom - wide-open possibilities!
The Caplio RX digital camera’s wide-angle lens is such a joy to use. Enjoy fitting in more friends when taking a fun group photo (without having to stand an enormous distance away from the subjects!) or in times where a beautiful landscape seems to run on forever, with Caplio RX’s 28mm-100mm wide zoom lens it’s truly amazing how much scenery can be preserved on a single image. The angle of view is an incredible 75 degrees – compare this with just 62 degrees of conventional 35mm digital cameras and the results speak for themselves. It’s very practical and quite surprising just how many situations a wide-angle 28mm lens is terrifically handy for.

Super-quick shutter response and start-up time
“Quick, quick! The baby is smiling - take a picture!” In instances like these you will be very happy to own a Caplio RX digital camera. Incredibly, in about one second the camera is able to turn on and snap off a photo. The shutter response is the world’s fastest in its class at just 0.12 seconds – taking note that this time is calculated from the time the user presses the shutter button, rather than the time when focus lock is achieved.

Crisp 3.24-megapixel CCD with 3.6x optical & 3.4x digital zoom
The Caplio RX takes beautiful pictures with a robust 3.24-megapixel CCD that includes a vastly improved image processor that ensures colours look sharper and cleaner even in large printed formats. Moreover, take advantage of its remarkable 3.6x optical plus 3.4x digital zoom that delivers an outstanding combination of 12.2x zoom (equivalent to a telephoto range of 28-340mm on a regular 35mm camera) – this gives photographers plenty of opportunity to zoom into the tiniest details within any image. The Caplio RX has also added 64 and 100 to its ISO for a total ISO light-sensitivity range of 64-800, which all translates into better quality image taking opportunities.

Best of breed – marvelous 1cm “wide” macros
When it comes to macro photography, the Ricoh Caplio digital camera series are in a league of their own - and the leader has just raised the standard yet again. The Caplio RX now boasts the ability to capture objects of 18mm(H) x 24mm (W) at a distance of just 1cm. Keep the camera still at this distance and take advantage of its auto-focus target functionality that allows the user to conveniently pan around the image in order to find the desired focus point. The practical applications of Caplio RX’s advanced 1cm macro capabilities are simply innumerable to count; gorgeous flowers, sparkling jewelry, literally grab the tinniest of details of any object. There is even a built-in flash for shots as close as 9cm that highlights objects while protecting against any unwanted whiteout effects.

Power that lives on and on
Amass 400 shots* between recharges when using the optional rechargeable lithium-ion battery or take advantage of a nearby power source and use the optional AC adapter. The Caplio RX also has the ability to switch to two AA alkaline (comes included) or nickel metal hydride batteries and a synchro monitor mode that conserves energy by turning the monitor on automatically only when the shutter button is pressed to preview a shot or operate the zoom. All this makes the Caplio RX ideal for the road warrior who demands the highest level of power flexibility, performance and efficiency.

* Up to 400 shots under normal usage conditions (with 50% flash and zoom usage, LCD on, 30 seconds between shots, reviews of all photos).

Slim, sleek and built for life
At just 29mm thick, the Caplio RX’s curved aluminum-alloy body was designed to fit perfectly in a shirt pocket and perfectly in hand. Next to the bright 1.8-inch TFT LCD monitor also features its trademark “Quick Review” functionality that conveniently displays the most recent picture taken at a simple press of a button.

Movie and sound functionality
The Caplio RX encourages creativity by enabling users to take up to 120 seconds of AVI video action clips in a video size of 160x120 and even records convenient "voice memo" stamps of up to eight seconds to photos taken. Caplio RX can also be used as a multipurpose voice recorder that has comes handy during a school lecture, important business meetings and taking verbal notes in situations when pen and paper are not the most practical.

Six scene modes
The Caplio RX comes equipped with six very useful scene modes (portrait, sports, landscape, night scene, text and high-sensitivity) that were intended to help the photographer capture various shooting situations in their best light. In high-sensitivity mode, the screen automatically illuminates subjects to aid in framing the picture in under-lit environments such as a candlelit dinner or trendy nightclub lounge.

Shoot, analyze and improve
Perfect a golf swing and analyze other action sequences by taking advantage of the Caplio RX's various continuous modes. In M-continuous mode, with the shutter button held down the camera memorizes the last 16 shots in one file for two seconds of footage. This comes in handy when uncertain about the start or finish of a particular action. In S-continuous mode, it can take a series of 16 shots in one file for two seconds of footage with just one press of the shutter button. When reviewing the 16 shots during playback, each frame can be enlarged individually, and can be quickly browsed back and forth through all 16 shots creating the feel of an animated movie.

Exposure, balance practicality
In tricky lighting situations, the convenient auto-bracket function allows the photographer to take three individual shots at one time at three different exposure settings. White balance bracket, on the other hand, applies tones of red, normal white, and blue to three separate images.

Internal 8MB memory and SD card
The Caplio RX comes equipped with a 8MB internal memory chip and can use optional Secure Digital memory cards that store plenty more information. These next-generation multimedia storage devices are quick, reliable and are compatible with an array of mobile and communications equipment. The Caplio RX is also compatible with MultiMedia Cards.

Instant PC transfers
Transferring files to a PC is extremely easy. Simply turn off the camera and link the Caplio RX up via a USB cable. The Ricoh Gate software installed on the computer will then instantly start transferring images to an automatically created folder at a rate of three megabytes per second.

Ricoh Caplio 300G

ricoh-300g.gifOutdoors Magic have just reviewed theRicoh Caplio 300G and gave it a 4 star rating for performance and a 3 star rating for value.

They write:

'The Ricoh isn't the lightest, most compact camera in the world and it won't be on David Bailey's Christmas list, but it's very user friendly and commendably tough. If you're after a digital camera that you can drag through the outdoors with confidence though, the Caplio 300G fits the bill. We dunked it in streams and dropped it on paths and it carried on snapping away dependably. The performance mark is for useability rather than outright picture quality.

If you're a serious picture merchant, you'll likely spend your £300 on something that offers higher image quality, but if you want a weather-beating, knockabout, decent quality, snapshot tool, and can live with the above average size and weight, the latest Caplio fits the bill nicely.'

The Ricoh Caplio 300G is a 3.4 megapixel camera with a 3x Optical Zoom. It is both a water and dust resistant digital camera - The Caplio 300G is designed to float and can be used underwater for a period of 30 minutes to a depth of one metre.

KYOCERA ANNOUNCES NEW CONTAX SL300R T* DIGITAL CAMERA

Newest Digital Camera With RTUNE Has Sophisticated Upscale Look Associated With Contax’s Award-Winning SLRs

Features Carl Zeiss T* Lens, Slim Swivel Body Design and Unlimited Continuous Shooting at 3.5 Frames Per Second

Somerset, NJ -- Somerset, NJ - Kyocera Optics, Inc., the imaging industry arm of Kyocera Corporation, expands its breakthrough line of digital cameras with the new, upscale Contax SL300R T* featuring its revolutionary RTUNE imaging technology. Targeted for the discriminating photographer, the new 3.2 MegaPixel Contax SL300R T* is equipped with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar T* 5.8-17.4mm F2.8-4.7 lens (which is equivalent to a 38mm to 115mm zoom in 35mm format). Kyocera’s RTUNE imaging engine virtually eliminates shutter lag time and allows the world’s fastest full-memory continuous shooting at 3.5 frames per second (fps) with outstanding image quality.

“Kyocera now expands its revolutionary, new RTUNE imaging technology to the Contax brand with the Contax SL300R T* and enhances it with upscale features such as the Carl Zeiss-Vario Tessar T* lens and the eye-catching, rich leather-accented body”, explained Ben La Marca, President of Kyocera Optics, Inc. “Great picture-taking moments don’t wait and our exclusive RTUNE Imaging Technology practically eliminates the shutter lag-time issue that is the number one irritant among users of other manufacturers’ digital cameras. RTUNE is at the heart of our new digital camera lineup.

Kyocera is providing a robust solution for consumers through the integration of RTUNE on our new Contax SL300R T* digital camera as well as imminent future models. Kyocera will continue to strive to mimic the consumer film camera experience with new breakthroughs like RTUNE in its future digital camera solutions."

The 3.2 Megapixel Contax SL300R T* offers a solution for digital camera fans who have been frustrated by "missing the moment" due to the combination of the shutter speed lag time and slow "shot to shot” speed that they have been forced to live with when using other manufacturers’ digital cameras. Utilizing Kyocera’s exclusive RTUNE Imaging Technology, the Contax SL300R T* offers the World's fastest Continuous Capture Mode. In combination with its virtually non-existent shutter lag time of 0.07 second (*1), the Contax SL300R T* can capture images at an incredible unlimited 3.5 frames per second! (*2) For instance, you can fill a high speed 256MB SD memory card with continuous images at 3.5 fps, then go back, review the shots you’ve taken and pick the ones you want to keep. And this all happens at full 3.2 MegaPixel resolution of 2048 x 1536. This dynamic feature removes the restrictions imposed by other manufacturers’ point and shoot digital camera models.

Kyocera's RTUNE Imaging Technology accomplishes this by eliminating the barriers that limit the speed in which digital image are captured and written to the memory card. The pipelined operation removes all of the bottlenecks for non-stop image capture at a speed that is 10-12 times faster than the competition.

The real benefit to users is that they will be able to capture images with the Contax SL300R T* that were missed before due to shutter lag time. Imagine being able to capture the very moment your daughter blows out the candle on her first birthday cake or your son sliding into home plate with the winning run! Any action sequence can be captured and shared with the new Contax SL300R T*.

The Contax SL300R T* has a rich looking, extremely thin, magnesium body whose front panels are covered in rich black leather. The swivel lens/flash camera body of the Contax SL300R T* rotates, enabling easy framing of any scene from high overhead to low angle shots. The rotating lens provides easy movement for perfect framing in every scene such as self-portrait, low and high angle shots and macro mode. A protective lens hood and 28mm filter adapter is included. Its diminutive size (3.9" wide x 2.5" high x .6" thin) and sleek body with its rich finish including the black leather front panels are sure to make the Contax SL300R T* a fashion statement. The Contax SL300R T* also offers a vast array of very flexible functions such as seven scene modes to suit any type of shooting conditions, voice memo feature that makes it possible to record a voice message with an image, and movie mode with sound that can be recorded in full VGA resolution at 30 frames/second until the memory card is full.

Kyocera’s exclusive RTUNE imaging engine provides the world's fastest consecutive shooting of any digital camera. RTUNE provides the combined features of Continuous Capture at 3.5 frames/second with outstanding image quality and dynamic range. In addition, Kyocera’s unmatched "DayFine" LCD Monitor displays the subject in real time during consecutive shooting. RTUNE is the perfect solution for subjects on the move such as pets, children and sporting events.

The Contax SL300R T* offers outstanding image quality which users have come to expect and appreciate from Kyocera. With conventional digital cameras, adjusting the white balance after converting the analog image information from the CCD to the digital signal processor controls the level of each RGB color in captured images. However, this method requires compensating an uneven signal level for each RGB color at the analog stage with the digital signal processor, so if the signal levels in shadow areas are not sufficient, the result is poor image quality.

The RTUNE imaging engine in the Contax SL300R T* adjusts the output level for each RGB color at the analog signal stage before it is converted into a digital signal. Then the image processor converts it into a digital signal to provide fine detail that faithfully reproduces the original image.

Thanks to RTUNE, color noise is reduced in 16-bit A/D calculations. The A/D conversion of analog image information into digital signals is performed with accuracy of 16 bits internally, and outputted as 12 bits. Since detailed resolution reduces color noise, which tends to occur in a single color or in a dark area of an image, it faithfully reproduces subtle darkness and lightness as well as shades and shadows of color.

High-Resolution 3X Optical Zoom
The high-resolution, 3x optical zoom lens can be combined with the 2x digital zoom for a maximum of 6x. In addition, up to 8x digital zoom can be used when playing back images. The Contax SL300R T* incorporates high-resolution optics, which provide a projected resolution of at least 200 lines/mm at the image center at focal lengths of 5.8mm (wide-angle) to 17.4mm (telephoto). These focal lengths correspond to approximately 38mm to 115mm for 35mm format cameras. The lens combines ultra compact size and high performance through the breakthrough engineering advances developed by Kyocera’s Optical Equipment Division’s R&D group.

Special scene modes provide the perfect solution for any shooting situation. The Contax SL300R T* incorporates seven scene modes to make the most of challenging photographic setting according to the situation, based on six predefined settings. The seven modes include Standard, Sport Action, Night View, Night View Portrait, Portrait, Macro and Landscape. Each of the settings can be easily selected by using the scene button located on the back of the camera body.

The Contax SL300R T* enables the user to easily shoot movies with audio at 30 frames/second up to the maximum capacity of the memory card. The recorded file is in AVI format and can be played back easily on the “DayFine” LCD Monitor or a personal computer. (To play back movies on a personal computer, it is necessary to install QuickTime 4.1 or later).

The customized start-up screen allows the Contax SL300R T* user to select a favorite image as the start-up screen. The image appears whenever the Contax SL300R T* is turned on for a personalized experience.

It is easy to resize captured images with the Contax SL300R T* down to 320 x 240 or 160 x 120 pixels after being captured. This is the ideal solution for emailing images to family, friends and co-workers. From the Contax SL300R T*’s menu selection, you can select from three image resize options: full, one quarter and one sixteenth. The area to be resized can be selected via the selection button. This unique function in combination with a PDA incorporating an SD memory card slot, allows the user to easily create an image size suitable for the PDA’s display.

The Contax SL300R T* incorporates Kyocera’s unmatched “DayFine” LCD technology in the 1.5 inch LCD Monitor that is easy to see even in the brightest of outdoor sunlight conditions. In addition to the conventional back light system, the DayFine” TFT (Thin Film Transistor) technology includes a special optical film coating and exclusive light transmission circuitry that harnesses the power of the sun by absorbing incoming light and then reflecting the light back through the LCD, adding to the brilliance and contrast of the display.

When it comes to navigating the menus, Kyocera’s Contax SL300R T* makes it easy for the user to navigate from setup to capture to playback. To make it intuitive, the camera offers an easy to use Control button that works on the principal of a joystick. Along with the logical screen selections and functions, the Contax SL300R T* is easy for anyone to use.

The Contax SL300R T* is provided with a USB cable that is perfect for uploading images to a personal computer. The cable complies with the USB mass storage class of accessories and images can be read via the cable as a mass storage devise on a computer.

To fit every situation, five flash modes are available (Auto flash, Red-eye reduction auto flash, Red-eye reduction fill-in flash, Fill-in flash, Flash off), three color modes (Color, sepia, B/W), six white balance modes (Auto, Daylight, Tungsten, Cloudy, Fluorescent, Preset), five sharpness settings (+3, +2, +1, standard, -1), two chroma settings (standard, +, -) and exposure compensation (+2.0EV ~ -2.0EV) is also available.

The Contax SL300R T* features Epson’s revolutionary new PRINT Image Matching (PIM) technology, enabling them to work perfectly with the newest generation of EPSON Stylus Photo printers. With PRINT Image Matching, critical image specific parameters for printing are recorded by the camera and saved in each image data file. PRINT Image Matching-enabled Epson Stylus Photo printers use this information to ensure that they accurately reproduce the image created by the camera.

Additionally, the Contax SL300R T* is shipped with the highly rated Adobe Photoshop Album software. The street price of the Contax SL300R T* is $499.99 and is shipping immediately. Visit us at www.kyoceraimaging.com.

Take images that were missed before due to digital shutter lag

Experience faster shot-to-shot performance, similar to what they are used to with a traditional point and zoom film camera

Instantly power on their camera, take a picture or a continuous stream of photos

“With Kyocera’s exclusive RTUNE Technology, digital photography has finally realized its potential and is closer than ever to the traditional film shooting experience,” explained Ben La Marca, President of Kyocera Optics, Inc. “Digital Photographers no longer have to worry about missing important moments of spontaneity. Armed with RTUNE Technology, users can instantly switch on their camera, instantly take a picture or a continuous stream of photos, and expect the camera to instantly write the image and be ready again.”

With RTUNE, the image is captured from the CCD and is already being processed through the parallel processing operations that eliminate typical buffer constraints. As you are taking the pictures, you can simultaneously view the captured images in real time with no capture performance degradation.

The paralleled processor, with dedicated hardware blocks, simultaneously captures, processes and writes the resulting images to the High Speed SD card. This enables non-stop capture, eliminating bottlenecks and functioning at an amazing 10 - 12 times faster than the competition.

High performance, high resolution Movie Mode is twice as good as its 4MP/5MP competitors with 640 x 480 at 30 fps and 720 x 1280 HD at 15 fps.

Kyocera Finecam M410R

kyocera_finecam_m410.jpgThe Kyocera Finecam M410R is a 4.0 Megapixel camera with a 10x Optical Zoom which allows users to shoot continuously at 3.3 frames per second with virtually no shutter lag.

To learn more about the Kyocera Finecam M410R read the following press release announcing the camera.

Press Release
NEW KYOCERA FINECAM M410R DIGITAL CAMERA

Designed To Capture All The Action, 4.0 Megapixel Camera Offers High-Powered 10X Optical Zoom and High-Speed Lens

RTUNETM Technology Ensures Unlimited Continuous Shooting at Even In New Auto Focusing Mode

Somerset, NJ - Kyocera Optics, Inc., the imaging industry arm of Kyocera Corporation, announces it’s most advanced RTUNE digital camera yet, the sleek and powerful Kyocera Finecam M410R. Targeted to prosumers who demand the very best, especially when trying to capture sports or action images, this 4.0 Megapixel camera utilizes Kyocera’s revolutionary RTUNE image processing for incredibly fast, continuous shooting at 3.3 frames per second and a brand new Auto Focus (AF) Mode that allows for continuous AF shooting as well. Photo buffs will also love the high-powered 10X optical zoom, the high-speed f/2.8-3.1 lens, integrated USB 2.0 for faster image transfers and a brand new high-precision Electronic Viewfinder (EVF).

Utilizing Kyocera’s RTUNE Image Processing Technology, the M410R offers the world's fastest consecutive shooting of any 4.0 Megapixel digital camera. In combination with virtually non-existent shutter lag time of 0.07 second (*1), it can capture images at an incredible, unlimited 3.3 frames per second! (*2)

The Finecam M410R also offers the option of Continuous Auto Focus shooting at 2 frames per second. Even as the subject moves near or far from the camera, focus is adjusted on every image. Kyocera engineers have achieved a full 2 frames per second with perfect focus in the Finecam M410R. For instance, you can fill a high speed 256MB SD memory card with continuous images and then review the images and select the ones you want to keep. And this all happens at 4 Megapixel resolution of 2272 x 1704, which allows users to create tack sharp 11” x 14” print enlargements. This dynamic feature removes the restrictions imposed by other manufacturer’s camera models. The Finecam M410R sets a new standard for defining focus in action sequences.

The high resolution Kyocera 10X Zoom Lens offers picture details not found in other lens designs. Perfect for capturing fast action images, the long reach of the 10X lens brings distant objects close, isolating the subject from its background. Now, you can capture your subject on the playing field in any sport without the distractions usually found. The focal length range of the lens on the M410 is 5.7~57mm, equivalent to 37~370mm on a 35mm SLR camera. The high-speed f/2.8~3.1 lens ensures fast shutter speeds to freeze action along with the shallow depth that helps isolate the subject. Low light images are easy to capture thanks to the large initial f/stop.

As an important factor for framing pictures, the Finecam M410R is equipped with an Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) with 300,000 high precision pixels for a true representation of your captured image. Now the photographer has the ability to see an accurate color representation with incredible detail of their framed image in “real time”.

Integrated USB 2.0 allows faster-than-ever image and movie transfers between the camera and your PC or printer. This new specification is up to 10 times faster than USB 1.0. The incorporation of "PictBridge" Photo Printing allows direct photo printing right from the camera without using your PC. PictBridge is the new communication standard for sending images direct to your PictBridge capable printer via the USB port. Quantities and sizes are selectable on the camera for transmission to the printer.

The Finecam M410R’s compact size (4.2” W x 2.9” H x 3.4” D) and sophisticated black body are sure to make a fashion statement. A 52mm filter adapter is supplied with the M410 to accommodate tele and wide angle lenses as well as filters attached to the lens. The Finecam M410R also offers a vast array of very flexible functions such as preset scene modes to suit any type of shooting conditions, voice memo feature that makes it possible to record a voice message with an image, and movie mode with sound that can be recorded in VGA at 30 frames/sec. until the memory card is full.

Scene modes provide the perfect solution for any shooting situation. The Finecam M410R’s four scene modes provide automatic settings for shooting four types of scenes: “Portrait”, “Sport”, “Nightscape” and “Night Portrait”. For example, Sport mode automatically combines continuous shooting with Auto Focus to ensure that you never miss any important action moments. It also offers “Single Shooting Auto” and “Continuous Shooting Auto” modes that enables beginners with little knowledge to easily make settings for error-free photos. Each of the settings can be easily selected by using the scene button located on the back of the camera body.

The Finecam M410R enables the user to easily shoot movies with audio at 30 frames/second up to the maximum capacity of the memory card. The recorded file is in AVI format and can be played back easily on the DayFineTM LCD Monitor or a personal computer. (To play back movies on a personal computer, it is necessary to install QuickTimeTM 4.1 or later).

The customized start-up screen allows the Finecam M410R user to select a favorite image as their introduction image. The image appears whenever the Finecam M410R is turned on for a personalized experience.

It is easy to resize captured images with the Finecam M410R down to 320 x 240 or 160 x 120 pixels after being captured. This is the ideal solution for emailing images to family and friends. From the Finecam M410R’s menu selection, you can select from three image resize options: full, one quarter and one sixteenth. The area to be resized can be selected via the selection button. This unique function in combination with a PDA incorporating an SD memory card slot, allows the user to easily create an image size suitable for the PDA’s display.

The Finecam M410R incorporates a 1.5” DayFine LCD Monitor that is easy to see in the brightest of sunlight conditions. In addition to the conventional back light system, DayFine TFT (Thin Film Transistor) technology includes a special optical film and exclusive light transmission circuitry that harnesses the power of the sun by absorbing incoming light and then reflecting the light back through the LCD, adding to the brilliance and contrast of the display.

When it comes to navigating the menus, the Kyocera Finecam M410R makes it easy from setup to capture to playback. To make it intuitive, the camera offers an easy to use Control button that works on the principal of a joystick. Along with the logical screen selections and functions, the Finecam M410R is easy for anyone to use.

To fit every situation five flash modes are available (Auto flash, Red-eye reduction auto flash, Red-eye reduction fill-in flash, Fill-in flash, Flash off), three color modes (Color, sepia, B/W), six white balance modes (Auto, Daylight, Tungsten, Cloudy, Fluorescent, Preset), five sharpness settings (+3, +2, +1, standard, -1), two chroma settings (standard, +, -) and exposure compensation (+2.0EV ~ -2.0EV) is also available.

Additionally, the Finecam M410R is shipped with the highly rated Adobe Photoshop AlbumTM software.

The street price of the Finecam M410R is $499.99.

Foveon x530

polaroid_x530_1.jpgThe Foveon x530 from Polaroid has a 4.5 megapixel Foveon sensor chip (called the X3).

'This week Foveon will enter the mainstream market with a new camera priced at $399 that will be manufactured in China and marketed as the Polaroid x530 with Foveon technology.

The Foveon sensor chip, called the X3, is made using an industry standard semiconductor manufacturing process and has received good reviews for color fidelity and resolution. The chip is composed of millions of photo-detectors, each capable of capturing red, blue and green light. In contrast, most of today's digital cameras use a chip with individual color filters that correspond to each photoreceptor. Although the Foveon technology is generally thought to have advantages over the three-chip approach in image quality, cost, lower power consumption and adaptability to new photo and video applications, it has not been widely adopted. The challenge has been to compete with an older, more entrenched technology that is falling in cost.' (from the NY Times - see link below)

LAS VEGAS, Nevada, February 11, 2004 – Foveon Inc., a technology leader in high-quality digital image capture products, announced today that a new Polaroid brand digital camera will incorporate the 4.5 megapixel Foveon X3 direct image sensor. The camera is the world’s first point-and-shoot digital camera to incorporate X3 technology. Foveon X3 direct image sensors are the only image sensors that directly capture color in three layers, just like color film. This results in richer colors, warmer tones, and sharper images than are available through traditional image sensors.

First introduced in 2002, the X3 image sensor has only been available in a professional class digital camera. Now with the introduction of the Polaroid x530, consumers are able to enjoy the many benefits of X3 technology in an affordable full-featured point-and-shoot digital camera. The Polaroid x530 is scheduled to ship to retailers in June 2004 with a suggested retail price of $399.

The Foveon technology enables the Polaroid x530 digital camera to produce superb 8” x 10” images – the largest print size that most consumers will print. The camera takes advantage of several key features of the X3 direct image sensor including X3F raw file format image capture, video clip capture at VGA resolution, and Foveon’s recently introduced X3 Fill Light software. The X3 Fill Light software tool digitally simulates the photographic method of "dodging and burning" adding extra light to shadow regions, while preserving highlight detail. It is a powerful method for simultaneously adjusting overexposed and underexposed areas of a digital image with a single simple control.

Foveon has received numerous technical awards and recognition including: Popular Science’s Best of What’s New Award, Time Magazine’s Best Inventions of the year, the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) award and the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) Award. The Polaroid brand x530 digital camera is made by World Wide License Ltd under exclusive license by Polaroid and distributed in the United States through Uniden America Corporation. Information about the Polaroid x530 digital camera can be found at www.polaroid-digital.com.

About Foveon and X3 Direct Image Sensors
Since its establishment in 1997, Foveon has focused on the development of image capture technologies and products for digital cameras. The company's X3 direct image sensors are the only image sensors that directly capture red, green, and blue light at every point in an image. The design of the X3 direct image sensor leverages the natural color separation property of silicon. When silicon is exposed to light, blue light is absorbed near the surface, green light is absorbed deeper, and red light is absorbed deepest within the silicon. In Foveon X3 direct image sensors, pixels are placed at these corresponding depths in the silicon to detect the red, green, and blue light that has been absorbed. This stacked-pixel design ensures that all of the color is captured at every point in an image.

In contrast, the traditional CCD and CMOS image sensors used in today’s digital cameras capture only one color per pixel location and must mathematically interpolate the two colors not detected. This interpolation process results in false colors, reduced color resolution and color artifacts.

Foveon X3 technology is highly scalable for a wide range of cameras including digital still/video cameras, PDAs, cell phones, security cameras and scientific cameras.

Ricoh Caplio G4

ricoh_g4.jpgThe Ricoh Caplio G4 Wide is a 3.24-megapixel, 3x optical zoom digital camera that looks like it has everything the average digital camera user would want. It won't set the world on fire, but it will satisfy those wanting to begin digital photography with a camera that is not too complicated.

The G4 weighs 165g excluding the x2 AA batteries, memory card and hand strap. Its dimensions are W x 112.9mm H x 57.5mm D x 36.4mm when the 3x zoom lens is retracted.

It has one of the fastest shutter release times of all digital cameras and a very start start up time. This alleviates a frustration of many digital photographers. It is also reasonably priced and in reach of most looking to buy a camera.

Contax N Digital

contax-n.jpgLuminous Landscapes has just reviewed the Contax N Digital.

'The Contax N Digital was the first professional digital SLR with a full size CCD chip and 6.04 megapixel recording resolution. In many ways it was, and still is a groundbreaking camera that sports a host of unique and innovative features. Not to mention that it is the only digital camera that provides access to professional Carl Zeiss optics, it is also the only digital SLR in existence that is fully compatible with lenses and accessories of two film systems: Contax N1/NX 35mm system and Contax 645 autofocus medium format camera. Even with the advent of Kodak DCS 14n and Canon 1Ds that feature over-ten-megapixel full-frame CMOS chips, the Contax N Digital remains the only full-frame digital camera that uses CCD technology for digital capture. Kyocera Optics managed to integrate a Philips 3008x2008 24x36mm chip used before in medium format digital backs into a camera body that still remains the lightest and the most compact among full-frame digital SLRs.'

update - Ricoh Europe have also just announced the European release of the Ricoh Caplio 400G. Following is the European Press Release.

Ricoh Announces The European launch of the Caplio 400G Wide. Capture a Wider Image With This High Performance, Water and Dust Resistant, Digital Camera

March 2004.
Following on from the success of the 300G last year, Ricoh are proud to announce the Caplio 400G Wide. This model has the same characteristic tough body of its predecessor, the Caplio 300G, and is the perfect choice for taking pictures in the rain, in sandy, or in dusty environments. The new wide 28-85mm zoom lens allows you to capture a wider image with sharp focus and not compromise on any detail - it's wider, faster, better.

Ricoh has taken digital imaging a step forward with the introduction of its wide lens technology. Zoom lenses for digital cameras generally do not compare favourably with those for conventional 35mm cameras. The main reason for this is because digital camera lenses require more peripheral light. Ricoh was able to overcome this handicap through a unique arrangement of eight lens elements in three groups. The first group, the most important for realising a wider lens, comprises three lenses, one of which is a concave, Meniscus aspherical lens, made of low-dispersion glass with a high refractive index. With the Caplio G4 wide and now the Caplio 400G Wide, users no longer have to make any sacrifices in zoom performance for the convenience of a digital camera.

The Caplio 400G Wide is designed for durability and geared towards a wide range of outdoor applications. It affords users JIS* Protection grade 7-equivalent water resistance and JIS Protection grade-6 dust resistance, which make it possible to take pictures in sandy or dusty environments. It is even possible to wash the camera with water! The 400G Wide can even take pictures under water at a depth of 1m or less, for up to 30 minutes. The camera is lightweight, easy to handle and has padding protection on either side and around the lens to provide superb durability when being used outdoors.

With a blazing shutter response time of 0.14-second and a fast start up time of 1.8-second, the Caplio 400G Wide is ready to take pictures quickly to take advantage of every photo opportunity. One of the features of the Caplio range is the superb 1cm Macro facility that allows the photographer to capture even the smallest details – with the Caplio 400G Wide, the photographer also has the advantage of the tele macro function, which provides the same magnification but allows the user to move the camera 4cm away in order to prevent the shadow of the camera from creeping into the shot.

Easy to use, the Caplio 400G Wide has a 3.24 megapixel and 3x wide zoom lens; combining the 3x optical zoom and 3.4x digital zoom to gives up to 10.2x zoom photography. The Caplio 400G Wide has all the features that a photographer needs to be able to take exact quality images in any environment.

Main Features:

1. Designed To Stand Up To Outdoor Use.
Water- and dust-resistant, durable, portable, and easy to operate
- Use of a reinforced glass dust protector in front of the lens, and rubber packing on opening parts and buttons provides JIS protection grade 7-equivalent water resistance and JIS protection grade-6 dust resistance. The camera can be washed with water and used in the rain, and is capable of photography in highly dusty or sandy environments.
- Protection on each side and in key locations provides superb durability.
- The camera uses a sturdy, two-piece strap for hanging the compact, lightweight body around your neck when walking.
- The large shutter button and switches make the camera easy to use even when wearing gloves.

2. Groundbreaking Wide Zoom Lens.
- The Caplio 400G Wide 3x zoom lens ranges from 28mm to 85mm (equivalent on a 35mm camera). A unique lens arrangement and use of highly refractive low-dispersion, aspherical lenses, allows it to perform at the level of conventional 35mm film cameras, a significant step in the evolution of the digital camera.
- Combine the 3x optical zoom and 3.4x digital zoom to enable up to 10.2x zoom photography.

3. Never Miss That Perfect Shot.
- Superb response: just 0.14 seconds between the time the shutter release is pressed until exposure begins.
- High-speed processing: Start-up takes approximately 1.8 seconds.

4. Long Operating Time.
Long battery life and choice of power sources keep low batteries from stealing photo opportunities
- Long battery life: Use the optional high-capacity lithium ion battery to take up to 3,500 continuous shots. Reduce the hassle of changing batteries in adverse weather conditions .
- No more worries about running out of batteries at a bad time: the camera also supports readily- available AA batteries (alkaline, nickel, and NiMH). Get the most out of outdoor use.
- An optional AC adapter is also available for indoor use.

5. Six Distinct Scene Modes.
- Portrait, sports, landscape, night scene, text and high-sensitivity. All these modes help to optimise results in varied shooting situations.

6. 1cm Macro; 4cm Tele Macro.
- The Caplio 400G Wide takes macros as close as 1cm from a subject, allowing the photographer to capture every small detail.
- The photographer may also take advantage of the tele macro function, which provides the same magnification but allows the user to move the camera 4cm away in order to prevent the shadow of the camera from creeping into the shot.

7. Fast and Easy Transfer To PC.
- The imaging software provided makes instant image transfers from the Caplio G4wide to USB-equipped personal computers fast and easy.

The Caplio 400G kit includes:
USB cable, AV cable, Software CD (Win, Mac), AA Alkaline batteries (2), Neck strap, LCD hood, Instruction manual, Warranty card.

Minox DD1 Diamond

minox dd1.jpgThe Minox DD1 Diamond will definitely turn a few heads when its pulled out to take a few snaps. You see it's got Diamonds (8 of them)!

No they are not the latest technology in Digital Photography - they are purely there for decoration. Basically it seems to be much the same as the normal DD1 (which I took a quick look at today - it looks fun) with a few bells and whistles.

Rollei DP3210

rollei-dp3210.jpgRollei have just announced their DP3210 Digital Camera. It has a 3.3 megapixel Sensor and 10x zoom lens. It stores its data on SD cards and has a 2.5 inch LCD. I'm looking forward to seeing it close up.

Rollei Press Release 02/12/03
Rollei launches a new 3.2 MP digital camera with 10x optical zoom! - Powerful digital zoom camera from Rollei!

The new Rollei dp3210 is a sophisticated digital camera boasting a 10x zoom lens and 3.3-megapixal resolution.

The dp3210 is Rollei's answer to the manifold challenges facing serious amateur photographers. Its high-speed, high-performance 10x zoom lens covers focal lengths from 5.7-57 mm (equivalent to 35-350mm in 35mm photography). Advanced automatic and manual modes conveniently cover even difficult photographic situations. What's more, the camera also allows the recording of video clips. The Rollei dp3210 will be available from mid-December.

While the 10x D-VarioApogon autofocus zoom lens already reaches out far into the distance, a 4x digital zoom adds even more punch to this zooming capability. In the wide-angle setting, focusing is possible from 50 cm to infinity, at the telephoto end from 120 cm to infinity. A macrofocus mode allows close-ups down to 10 cm at wide-angle and down to 90 cm at the longest focal length. Perfect framing control – indispensable with such a wide zooming range – is ensured by a TFT monitor and an 0.33" electronic viewfinder with a resolution of about 114,000 pixels, showing the precise frame that will be recorded.

When it comes to different shooting modes, the new Rollei camera also has a lot to offer. The 2.5" TFT monitor with a resolution of 119,548 pixels shows all relevant operating data and the camera status at a single glance. Exposure, for example, can be controlled by either programmed AE, aperture-priority AE, shutter-priority AE or manually. In addition to these exposure modes, there are special subject-specific programs tailored to portraiture, scenery, night scenes and sports or action photography. For discriminating users, there are different metering methods (spot and center-weighted average metering) as well as the possibility of bracketing in increments of 1/3 EV and a B-setting for time exposures.

To allow for difficult lighting situations, white balance can be manually controlled by pushing a button. Alternatively, there is automatic white balance for either daylight (sunny or cloudy), tungsten or fluorescent light. Several flash modes let the user choose between ON (fill flash), OFF, Auto, red-eye reduction and slow sync for evocative night-time photography. Sensitivity is variable from a noise-free ISO 70 up to ISO 400, allowing available-light shooting even in twilight.

The Rollei dp3210 has a built-in self-timer (2s or 10s delay) and can also be triggered with the aid of an infrared remote control. In addition, it allows continuous shooting at a rate of 1.25 fps and a high-speed mode with a maximum burst of nine images at approx. 3.3 fps.

In addition to stills, the Rollei dp3210 will also record video clips and sound. The corresponding files are recorded with 320 x 240 pixels and 15 images per second in the AVI format either in the camera's internal memory or on a SecureDigital card. A PAL/NTSC video output makes transmission to a TV set a cinch. To download stills to a computer, there is a USB interface.

LEICA DIGILUX 2 - The “analog” digital camera.

The new LEICA DIGILUX 2 camera combines the best of two worlds.
In the new LEICA DIGILUX 2, modern digital technology and the proven concepts of traditional analog photography are joined in a harmonious combination: Decisive photographic parameters such as sharpness, aperture, focal length and shutter speeds can be controlled like those on a classic single-lens-reflex camera by means of setting rings on the lens and a shutter speed dial.

To ensure the best pictorial results, the lens, the sensor and the electronics are optimally tailored to one another. The 2/3-inch CCD sensor is very large for its resolution of 5 million pixels. This combination of a high-performance lens and a large surface per picture element produces an extraordinary pictorial quality.

November 27, 2003

Kyocera Corporation (President: Yasuo Nishiguchi) is pleased to announce the release of ''CONTAX SL300R T*,'' the new 3.17 million effective pixel compact digital camera in early December this year. The camera is equipped with a Carl Zeiss T* Lens that boasts outstanding picture definition and also features the ''RTUNE'' image processing system that achieves both high-speed operations and high resolution.

CONTAX SL300R T* (Body color: titanium. Left: When not in use, Right: When shooting)

The CONTAX SL300R T* is equipped with the ''Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar T* 5.8-17.4mm F2.8-4.7,''( *1) a 3x optical zoom lens developed by Carl Zeiss, and provides clear image thanks to the T* coating applied to the lens surface. The adoption of Kyocera?fs proprietary image processing system ''RTUNE'' also enables full-memory, consecutive shooting at around 3.5 frames/second and fine color gradation with a reduction in noise.
The 16-mm-thick full-flat body makes the camera highly portable when not in use. Rotating the lens section for shooting offers free choice of camera angles and easy framing.
The magnesium die-cast body also features easy-to-hold genuine leather coverings on the front casing. A filter can be attached by using the special hood and adapter on the front of the lens.

Background to the development

With the growing number of digital camera users, the needs of users are also becoming more individual and diverse.
Against such a backdrop, the development of this new digital camera represents a totally new fusion between Kyocer's proprietary image processing technology and Carl Zeiss optical technology. Whereas the CONTAX Tvs Digital released in February this year is intended for a tool for creating photos that faithfully reproduce the photographer's vision, the CONTAX SL300R T* to be released this time will be introduced to the market ''high-quality daily necessities'' that lets users develop a closer affinity with photography as a portable communication tool and experience the joy of high-definition and high-speed performance.

Features of the product

1. Equipped with the 3x Optical zoom lens, Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar T* 5.8-17.4mm F2.8-4.7
The CONTAX SL300R T* is equipped with a 3x optical zoom lens for digital cameras, consisting of six elements in six groups, including aspheric lenses, which was developed using the latest Carl Zeiss optical technology. The lens focal length ranges from 5.8 mm (wide-angle) to 17.4 mm (telephoto), which corresponds to about 38-115 mm on a 35-mm camera, and achieves outstanding color reproduction and rich color gradation. Additionally, Carl Zeiss' special multi-layer T* coating dramatically reduces flare or ghost imaging that are generally the cause of poor resolution, and the result is clear, sharp images. Plus, the 3x optical zoom can be used with the 2x digital zoom to shoot at a maximum of 6x zoom. You can also use a digital zoom of up to 8x when playing back images, so you can take a look at the images you have taken.

2. Features the image processing system ''RTUNE''
High-speed, full-memory, consecutive shooting
The CONTAX SL300R T* is capable of full-memory, consecutive shooting at around 3.5 frames/second at the highest resolution. The liquid crystal monitor follows and displays images in real-time during consecutive shooting. If it is difficult to photograph the subject, such as children or pets with fleeting expressions, or moving subjects at an athletics meet or in group photograph with a number of people, taking consecutive photographs enables you to select the best shots afterward. Kyocera proposes this as a new way to take photos by making the most of the advantages offered by digital cameras.
* Full-memory consecutive shooting means shooting successive images until the capacity of the memory card is reached. It is available when using an SD memory card with a transfer speed of at least 10 MB per second for high-speed recording. (The consecutive shooting speed differs depending on the shooting conditions, the camera settings and memory card status. Free capacity may remain in the memory card, depending on images to be photographed.)

Close to the fastest performance in the industry
The camera starts up in less than one second and features a shutter time-lag of approximately 0.07 seconds, giving the camera close to the fastest performance in the industry. When you turn on the camera, you don't have to wait for it to be ready, and when you take photographs, the camera responds when you press the shutter, so you can seize the exact moment to take your shots.

Images with a fine array of gradations
The high-speed processor of the image processing system, RTUNE, consists of an analog front end and a digital processor. It first adjusts the RGB color balance of the analog data received in the CCD at the analog front end, and then converts it to a digital signal (A/D conversion).
The A/D conversion process provides 16-bit internal conversion of the data and sends it as 12-bit digital data to the next digital processor. The digital processor that receives the digital data produces the final image data and outputs it at high speed, creating low-noise digital data. By drastically reducing a wide range of noise generated in the digital images, it is possible to reproduce natural color and a fine array of gradations. To reproduce clear images, the image pickup device of the CONTAX SL300R T* uses a 1/2.7'' square pixel CCD with an original color filter, featuring 3,340,000 pixels in total.

3. Easy framing is possible thanks to the ''Easy-Framing Body'' with rotating lens section.
This 16-mm-thick, full-flat body boasts outstanding portability and can easily fit into a breast pocket or bag. The camera has a lightweight, but durable, magnesium die-cast body. The Easy-Framing Body with a rotating lens section also allows you to find a comfortable position to shoot in a wide variety of photographic situations. In macro shooting where you may need to shoot at high or low angles, rotating lens section enables framing at an angle that is easy to see on the monitor.

4. Superfine, Smooth Recording Function for VGA Moving Images with Audio
The camera enables you to easily shoot superfine, smooth moving images of VGA size (640 x 480 pixels) with audio at 30 frames/second up to the maximum capacity of the memory card(*2)
The record file is in AVI format and you can play it back easily on the liquid crystal monitor of the camera or a personal computer. (To play back your moving images on a personal computer, it is necessary to install QuickTime 4.1 or later.)
(*2) It is possible to shoot moving images up to the maximum capacity of the memory card when using an SD memory card with a recording speed of at least 10 MB per second for high-speed recording. (The shooting time differs depending on the shooting conditions, camera settings and memory card status.)

5. A Scene Mode Facilitates the Photographic Settings According to the Situation
The camera incorporates a scene mode that enables the camera to make the most suitable photographic settings according to the situation, based on seven predefined settings. They are: Standard, Sport, Portrait, Night View, Night View Portrait, Macro and Distant View. Each of the settings can be easily selected using the scene button.

6. A Function for Setting a Customized Start Screen Consisting of Your Favorite Image
The camera incorporates a function for setting a customized start screen that allows you to set an image you have photographed. The image appears whenever you turn on the power. If you use your favorite photo of yourself, your family or your pet, you can have special affection for the camera as belonging only to you.

7. A Function to Resize Your Photos for Easy Handling
It is possible to reduce the size of an image to 320 x 240 pixels or 160 x 120 pixels after it has been taken, and store it so that it can be handled via e-mail or by a portable terminal such as a PDA. You can select the new image size of the photos from three options, whole image, quarter area and one-sixteenth area.
Using this function in combination with a PDA that incorporates an SD memory card slot allows you to easily create an image size suitable for the liquid crystal screen of the PDA.

8. Special hood included. Filter attachable.
The CONTAX SL300R T* also comes with a special lens hood to be fitted to the front of the lens. A filter adapter is also included so that any commercially available 28-mm filter can be attached. When a filter is attached, you can see the effects of the filter directly on the liquid crystal monitor, which makes taking photos even more fun.
