Purrrrrr
This is a camera I could get used to using - and one day even afford! 6.3-megapixel. SLR. Compatible with EOS lenses. Great stuff. I can't wait to have a play with this one.
PC Mag reviews the Digital Rebel and gives it a rating of 4 stars in the professional category and write - 'The Rebel is fast and easy to use (although somewhat noisy), and the bundled lens is surprisingly good considering its light weight and low cost. The included rechargeable battery lasts all day, even with prolonged use of the LCD.'

I have been enjoying my Digital Rebel but I have experienced 1 problem using my Sigma zoom lenses. For some reason I get an "Error 99" when using these lenses in bright light situations. Canon's only response was that they don't support use with non-Canon products. Pretty lame support.
I have also been getting the dredded Error 99 when using a Sigma lens though mine is a 18-35mm.
I've only had the camera a couple of weeks, at first it was an occasional problem until eventually just connecting the lens to the camera caused the error.
The problem seems to be that the camera cannot control the aperture of the lens. To prove this (provided you don't get the error just by connecting the lens), connect the lens to the conputer, choose the smallest aperture setting available under AV and press the depth of field preview. Nothing will happen.
Sigma are aware of a problem and will take back the lens to "re-chip" them for a small postage fee, (provided you have proof of purchase, otherwise its more expensive).
Canon support just refer you to Sigma
I've just sent my lens off today, its going to take about six weeks!
This is my fourth digital camera, and the first that doesn't make me wish for film. I don't know enough about the mechanics of photograpy to comment knowledgeably on why I like the camera. I had no troubles figuring out how to use all the features, and pictures I take with this camera tend to look pretty much like I expect them to.
I've got mostly Canon lenses, and my Tamron 28-135 works flawlessly, so I've never seen error 99.
I have the same Error 99 problem with a SIGMA 50mm Macro but only when using flash (?)
Without flash everything works fine
i just started getting the error 99 message today, but my lens is the canon efs 18-55, which came with the camera.
when i remove the lens, the camera works, but when i attach the lens the error 99 message comes on.
i don't think this bodes well.
any thoughts?
My Sigma 70-300 APO lens also gives error 99.
Guess I'll send it in to Sigma.
I also have this problem with a sigma 170-500 I wanted to buy from a friend.
Anyone any idea how much this 'postage fee' is sigma is talking about?
This is a problem that is not a mystery. Sigma does not pay for the license to make EF lenses. Because of this, Sigma must reverse engineer its products. Sudden surprise compatibility problems are the result. Frankly, Canon does not deserve the bad rap it gets on the problem. Sigma created the problem, not Canon. Consumers foolish enough to buy Sigma junk deserve what they get.
I'm posting my experience with the Digital Rebel.
I purchased it about a month ago. I took it on a trip to the Virgin Islands to test it out in preparation for a Safari we're doing in February. I had the kit lens 18-55 and a Sigma 70-300mm. Both worked fine. I took about 150 pictures, a mixture of both lenses, and never had a problem.
Just now I received the Canon ES handgrip and installed it with 1 battery. The camera worked fine with the kit lens but did not with the 70-300 mm lens. I got the Error 99 message. It took the picture, but I would not store it.
I also have a Sigma 28-200mm compact hyperzoom which works just fine, and I have a Canon EF 18-55 that also works, but a Sigma zoom 28-80mm does not work at all.
I recharged the battery, took the grip off, but had the same working and non-working results.
Next I tried memory cards. I have a 128MB Kingston, a 512 MB Viking, a 512 MB SimpleTech, and a 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II.
All of the above trials were with the Utra II card.
I started with the 128 Kingston. I inserted it firmly into the camera. The card was full and I had to clear a few pictures to take a test shot with the 70-300 mm lens. It worked! I cleaned off all of the pictures from the card and took another 4 pictures with the long lens and they all worked. Then I used the 512 Viking; worked fine with the long lens. Then onto the 512 SimpleTech and boom... error 99. Inserted the Ultra and also got error 99. Back to the 128 Kingston and the Sigma lens that would not work at all, but behold, It worked, but only for one picture.
One more experiment... I used the 128 Kingston and the long lens and the picture taking went just fine. Then I took the lens that previously didn't work at all and it worked for the five pictures I took with it. Then I inserted the Ultra card and both lenses worked.
Note that I have an EOS 55 on which all lenses work just fine, and have for some time.
What to make of this? I believe it has to do with some kind of contact problem or a circuit that gets saturated but is able to reset itself with the right kind off electrical load.
Hope this helps.
I have got one sigma 28-105mm, same error 99 but after taken some pictures. Very strange.
The problem with Sigma lens are when the lens are diafragming (sorry my my bad english) If you use the maximun aperture the camera works fine.
Try using the lens at maximun aperture then close 1/3 and you get the Error 99
Good luck
It's the Canon Rebel Body Folks, not just the lens. Keep doing your research and you will learn that there is a flaw in the Rebel design that is causing the error 99. The many posts indicate that the Canon Rebel will fail instantly out of the box, with or without a Canon lens' and even more often with Sigma Lens'. Buyer beware, the Rebel is awesome when it works but a paper weight when error 99 renders it useless. Anyone that has repaired a Canon Rebel with a error 99 problem should post the fix so we can track the common thread and determine what the "catch all" error 99 means!
Used a Sigma 28-200mm and APO 400mm, both sharing the "99 syndrome" most of the time.
One exeption: when setting the canon 300d to manual mode. No problems there.
Never had any trouble with the canon efs 18-55mm.
