Canon, leader in photographic and imaging technology, today announces the addition of built-in-wireless connectivity to its PIXMA range with the launch of the PIXMA iP4000R. Based on the 5-ink, 25 ppm iP4000 personal photo and document printer, the iP4000R integrates WiFi (IEEE802.11g) print server technology for wireless networking, ready to run on either Windows or Mac platforms.
Launched last month, Canon's PIXMA sub-brand now includes fourteen new printers and multifunctionals. Each device in the range incorporates futuristic styling, and FINE (Full-Photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) technology, which delivers 2-picolitre droplet size and high-speed lab quality photo printing. "The introduction of the iP4000R coincides with a convergence of market factors, including the dramatic uptake of broadband and wireless in the home market, increased demand for photo printing in the home and office, lower prices, and the rapid growth of digital photography in the last 12 months" said Malcolm Hills, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging UK and Ireland. "Canon anticipates that the introduction of built-in wireless connectivity to the iP4000R will feed into the accelerating demand for photolab quality printers that integrate well in any environment."
Beyond photolab quality
The iP4000R features 2-picolitre droplet performance from FINE technology print heads, capable of producing glossy, borderless, professional quality photo prints. Exceeding traditional photolab quality, the iP4000R achieves exceptionally crisp, high contrast photo prints with the use of ContrastPLUS technology – a five tank ink system that includes an additional dye-based black ink for sharper contrast. The introduction of the extra ink will appeal to exacting users looking for the next level in printing lab-quality photographs, as well as users requiring crisp text documents from conventional pigment black ink. The printer will produce a 4” x 6” borderless photo in just 36 seconds, a full A4 colour document in only 26 seconds, and documents at 25 ppm (mono) / 17 ppm (colour).
Ultimate flexibility
As well as wireless printing, the iP4000R supports the vendor-independent PictBridge standard for direct cable connection photo printing with contemporary digital cameras and digital video cameras, without the need for a PC.
Print on Demand
Canon's 'Print on Demand' facility is designed to allow multiple users to share the printer. The printer manages queued print jobs, eliminating the need for users to monitor the printer status before submitting print jobs. All users have access to the status monitor to see at a glance which job is printing and how many jobs are pending. Being Ethernet compliant, the printer can support both wireless and wired networks simultaneously. It runs at 54 Mbps (wireless) and 10/100 Mbps (wired), with a 50m (indoor) range. Security features include: WPA, WEP64/128 bit encryption, the capacity to block access via MAC address and password protection.
Easy to install
The introduction of a USB connection setup has allowed Canon to create a simple setup process. The set-up wizard included with the iP4000R requires just a few mouse clicks in order to establish communications with most existing network environments. PC network settings do not have to be altered and, unless network security is active, no manual input of network information or installation of other network hardware is required.
FINE technology
In a process called FINE, Canon has adapted its own silicon chip manufacturing technology to create print heads with tolerance and precision similar to that of integrated circuits. FINE print heads, now featured in all PIXMA printers, incorporate Micro-Nozzles that deliver microscopic droplets with unrivalled speed, consistency and accuracy, which cannot be achieved by traditional ink jet print heads that are assembled from multiple parts.
Versatile installation
PIXMA printers are the only devices on the market that include both the traditional auto sheet feeder and cassette, allowing the printer to be stored and operated on a shelf or in other areas where space is at a premium. Dual paper trays also permit the printers to be loaded with plain paper and photo print media simultaneously. Dual paper trays, auto duplex printing and CD-R/DVD printing functions are now completely integrated without compromising the printer’s clean lines.
Single Ink technology
The printer features Canon’s transparent single ink system, whereby each ink is stored in an individually replaceable tank. This economical feature minimises waste because only the ink that is exhausted needs to be replaced. Users are warned with a pop up window on their computer when a particular colour is running low and the printer will not start to print a page if there is insufficient ink to finish.
New photo media
Canon’s new media extends the creative and practical applications of the iP4000R:
- Double sided photo paper (Photo Paper Plus Double Sided PP-101D) in A4 and 5 x 7”sizes. As well as standard packs, this media is available as a kit (Photo Album Kit PAK-101) which includes a high quality hardback album cover to make photo albums, scrapbooks and personal books
- Credit card size glossy media (Glossy Photo Paper GP-401) - ideal for printing wallet photographs and name cards
- Photo stickers (Photo Stickers PS-101) – sheets of 16 small photo stickers, for fun and practical purposes.
Easy photo and web printing
The printer comes bundled with the following software packages:
Easy-PhotoPrint – provides three easy steps to printing photos. Assisting with options such as media selection and scaling, it includes Face Sharpening for out-of-focus face correction, Red Eye Correction and Digital Face Smoothing to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
Easy-WebPrint – sits on the Explorer toolbar and takes the frustration out of web page printing, saving time, ink and paper by correctly scaling output to print one-page-per-sheet, preventing the common problem of the right-hand side of web pages being cut off.
CD-LabelPrint – allows for easy creation and printing on print ready CD or DVD media.

Canon Press Release
Canon's latest industry first - The 1-picolitre PIXMA iP5000
Canon, a leader in photographic and imaging technology, today announces the futuristic-looking PIXMA iP5000 - the PIXMA personal photo printer that awards Canon two industry firsts: an astonishing 1-picolitre droplet size and 9600 x 2400 dpi resolution. The clean lines and lustrous jet black shell of the iP5000 make a clear departure from traditional 'beige box' design, reflecting the growing importance of 'look and feel' in consumer products.
The 25 ppm iP5000 plugs directly into most contemporary digital cameras and digital video cameras via a PictBridge port for direct photo printing. Five-ink ContrastPLUS technology produces high contrast glossy photo prints with a quality that rivals that of photo labs and a full 4" x 6" borderless photo prints in just 36 seconds.
"Canon revolutionised the printer market in 1981 when it introduced the world's first Bubble Jet printer, the BJ-80, with a droplet size in excess of 100-picolitres" said Malcolm Hills, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging in the UK and Ireland. "By combining the first 1-picolitre drop size with comparison-defying style at a time when digital photography is exploding, Canon has set another defining moment in printing technology."
Professional personal photo lab
In a special process called FINE (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering), Canon has adapted its own silicon chip manufacturing technology to create print heads with tolerance and precision similar to that of integrated circuits. The FINE print head in the iP5000, which features Micro-Nozzles, is capable of ejecting a staggering 27 million (theoretical figure) microscopic droplets per second with unrivalled consistency and accuracy.
"To get an idea of scale, if you placed a 1-picolitre droplet every millimetre along a straight line, you would get 24 times around the circumference of the Earth before you had used up a litre," said Hills. "Tolerances achievable with the FINE manufacturing process are simply out of reach for competitors relying on print heads assembled from multiple parts."
Document printing uses a pigment-based black ink to deliver crisp laser-quality text, while ContrastPLUS uses an additional dye-based black to deliver higher contrast for high quality, professional photo prints.
The vendor independent PictBridge standard is supported for direct cable connection photo printing with any compatible digital camera or camcorder, without the need for a PC.
Borderless photos can be printed in credit card, 4” x 6”, 5” x 7” and A4 formats.
Powerful software completes the printers’ photolab capabilities – Easy-PhotoPrint and Photo Record give the user a fast route to creating individual prints, albums and more.
The incredible FINE nozzle density that delivers the world's smallest droplets also provides for blistering speeds for both business documents and photos. The iP5000 can produce 25 ppm mono and 17 ppm colour, while a full colour A4 document takes just 26 seconds.
Single Ink technology
The iP5000 features Canon’s acclaimed transparent single ink system, whereby each ink is stored in an individually replaceable tank. To minimize waste, only the ink that is exhausted needs to be replaced. A pop up window on their computer warns users when a particular colour is running low and the printer will not start printing a page if there is insufficient ink to finish.

Professional series A4 photo printing
Canon, leader in photographic and imaging technology, today announces its new 8-ink flagship professional photo printer: the 4800 x 2400 dpi PIXMA iP8500. Canon's ChromaPLUS technology adds additional red and green inks for vibrant, highly saturated colours. Combined with a FINE (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) technology print head, which generates permanent 2-picolitre ink droplets, this new PIXMA printer produces the ultimate professional photo prints. It also does so in record time - an A4 photo prints in just 34 seconds.
The iP8500 features advanced media handling and Canon's transparent single ink system, as well as direct photo printing from most contemporary digital cameras and digital video cameras supporting the PictBridge standard.
"The PIXMA range of printers continues Canon's commitment to superb quality, unfailing reliability and purity of design. The iP8500 perfectly embodies this philosophy," said Malcolm Hills, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging in the UK and Ireland. "With industry-leading, professional photo print quality and speed, the iP8500 is the ultimate A4 photo printer."
Ultimate photo quality
In a process called FINE, Canon has adapted its own silicon chip manufacturing technology to produce print heads with a tolerance and precision similar to that of integrated circuits. FINE print heads now feature in all PIXMA printers and deliver microscopic droplets with unrivalled speed, reliability, consistency and accuracy that cannot be achieved with traditional inkjet print heads that are assembled from multiple parts.
The iP8500 FINE print head has 6144 micro nozzles, capable of ejecting a staggering 147 million 2-picolitre droplets per second . This gets more ink on the page in less time and with greater accuracy for grain-free prints of unsurpassed clarity, contrast, colour range and smoothness of tone.
Canon's ChromaPLUS technology utilises eight colour inks: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Light Cyan, Light Magenta, Black, Red and Green. Canon's dye inks produce more vivid colours, reduced graininess and better contrast photo quality when compared with the flat and lack-lustre pigment-based inks used in some photo printers. The introduction of highly saturated red and green inks expands the colour gamut in the yellow to red and yellow to green areas. Colour saturation in the high chrome red area has been increased by up to 60% (compared to the 6-ink photo system) to more closely match the colour characteristics of positive photographic film.
The ultimate personal photo lab
PIXMA’s ultimate personal photo lab delivers professional-quality borderless photo printing at blistering speeds with convenient connectivity. An A4 photo print takes only 34 seconds, a 4” x 6” borderless photo will print in just 21 seconds and borderless photo print formats also include credit card, 5” x 7” and A4. Even conventional document printing is fast at 17 ppm (mono) and 15 ppm (colour).
The vendor-independent PictBridge standard is supported for direct cable connection photo printing with compatible digital cameras and digital video cameras, without the need for a PC. The iP8500 is the only A4 inkjet printer on the market to feature a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection, necessary for transferring large high-resolution colour image files at a rate fast enough to keep up with the printer's engine speed.
Powerful software completes the iP8500’s photo lab capabilities – EasyPhotoPrint and PhotoRecord give the user a fast route to creating individual prints, albums and more.

New Cyber-shot T3 Model Features Elegant Design and Improved LCD
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 29, 2004 — Thin, fast and good-looking describe Sony's new 5.1 megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-T3 digital camera, announced today.
The pocket-size T3 camera is Sony's thinnest digital camera to date, measuring in at less than three-quarters of an inch. And due to Sony's Real Imaging Processor™ circuit, this new model is lightning fast. It shoots bursts of up to four full-resolution images at three frames per second.
The T3 camera incorporates a built-in, electrically operated lens cover that opens instantly when the camera is activated. With a single push of the power button, it springs to life in under a second. The new camera will be available in October for about $500.
The camera features a large 2.5-inch LCD viewfinder, occupying roughly two-thirds of the back of the camera. The display's viewing area makes it easy to share images the moment they are captured.
The camera is equipped with a Transflective Clear Photo LCD TM that improves the quality of image display by preventing reflected light from interfering with it. Moreover, the new LCD's higher contrast, brightness and resolution ensure more accurate color reproduction.
“The T3 camera's new LCD makes it possible to effortlessly see your subject whether you're indoors at your child's recital or at the beach and of course its distinctive design fits any lifestyle,” said Greg Young, general manager for digital still camera marketing in Sony Electronics' Personal Mobile and Imaging Division.
To keep a slim profile, the T3 camera's Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® lens operates internally rather than extending beyond the camera's body and its 3X optical zoom ensures great image quality. Equipped with a 0-4X SmartZoom (at VGA resolution), the camera allows you to focus in on the area of interest of your subject by cropping the image size and thus avoiding image degradation.
With approximately 180 shots per charge of the camera's InfoLithium™ battery, you can snap away without fear of running down the charge.
With optional Memory Stick PRO Duo™ cards, the camera captures and plays back high resolution moving images. MPEG-VX Fine mode allows you to record MPEG video with 640x480 pixel resolution at 30 frames per second, up to the capacity of the memory media card being used.
Always The Right Setting
The new camera has sophisticated auto-focus and auto-exposure options to help get the picture right the first time. It allows you to choose from nine settings to match the scene – whether it's twilight, portrait, landscape, snow, beach or even fireworks – so it is easy to shoot high-quality images even in challenging lighting conditions.
The T3 camera also has a Magnifying Glass mode in which subjects appearing on the LCD screen can be magnified up to 3.3 times. This mode allows you to see and capture details that would otherwise be difficult to confirm with the naked eye.
Cyber-shot Station: Charging and A Show!
Whether placed next to a TV or PC, there's now a better place to put your digital camera other than a desk or table drawer. The supplied Cyber-shot Station USB cradle accommodates the DSC-T3 camera for playing back slideshows on a TV or transferring images to your PC while charging the camera's batteries. And when connected to a PictBridge ™ –compatible printer, such as Sony's PictureStation ® DPP-FP30 digital photo printer, printing a specific image is as easy.
The Sony Cybershot DSC-L1 is a 4.1 megapixel digital camera with a 3x optical zoom all bundled into a candy bar sized package. It comes in a four colors.

Steve's Digicams previews the Sony Cybershot DSC-L1 and writes:
" Like most of Sony's Cyber-shot cameras, the DSC-L1 model has speedy auto-focus and auto-exposure options to snap the best picture the first time. You can quickly select the best setting based on the shooting conditions by choosing from one of seven preset modes, including twilight, snow, beach and candle.
The DSC-L1 also features four newly developed technologies - including a linear focus drive and a compact high-resolution optical system - that combine to produce its ultra-small 3x optical lens. This lets you zoom in for crisp images of a flower or zoom out for a far-away shot of the game-winning goal, all the while staying in sharp focus."
CNET Reviews has a review of the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-L1. They write - 'Casual photographers will like the compact design, above-average performance, and long battery life of Sony's Cyber Shot DSC-L1, along with the extrawide view offered by its 32mm-to-96mm (35mm-camera equivalent) 3X Carl Zeiss zoom lens. However, mediocre image quality, a tiny 1.5-inch LCD viewfinder that's difficult to use, and a lack of even basic manual-exposure controls (other than exposure compensation) put this pocketable camera securely in the nonenthusiast snapshooting camp.'
DigicamReview has a review of the Sony Cybershot DSC-L1 and writes - 'The Sony Cybershot DSC-L1 is a very compact 4 megapixel digital camera packed into a solid metal body. The camera produces rich vibrant saturated colours and is capable of producing some very pleasing images. The camera gives you good control by allowing you to change the saturation, sharpness, and contrast of the picture. The camera features a very good movie mode, focuses well in low light, is quick in use and has a good screen that's usable in low-light as well as in sunshine. There are some problems, such as the expensive proprietry memory format, the slightly soft images, small screen, and tripod adapter, however the ease of use, speed of use, and high pocketability make up for most problems. I enjoyed using this camera, and took it nearly everywhere I went so that I had a camera with me at all times - Recommended!'
DCRP Reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-L1 and writes - 'The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-L1 is a decent camera for those who value size over features and photo quality. The L1 is ultra-compact and stylish, and it comes in four colors. While it's easy to hold, some of the controls are microscopic. The LCD is small as well, but it's viewable in both in bright outdoor light and dark rooms. Be warned that there is no optical viewfinder on this camera. Something else you won't find: manual controls. Photo quality is just okay, with details appearing soft and muddy, with vignetting (dark corners) popping up occasionally as well. Colors and exposure were good, however, and purple fringing was not a problem. The L1 offers a VGA movie mode that can keep recording until your memory card is full. Camera performance is very good in all areas, and battery life is above average as well.'
DP Review has a good reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-L1 and writes - 'Another month, another cute, easy to use and reliable Sony point-and-shoot camera. The DSC-L1 offers little in the way of innovation, instead you get a simple, fast, very small, very nicely designed and well put together little camera you really can carry anywhere. Picture quality is fine, though of course any camera/lens this compact is going to present some kind of compromise, and the L1 compares well with competitors such as the Canon SD300 and Olympus Stylus Verve Digita (both of which sell for slightly more).'

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 29, 2004 — The challenge to Sony engineers: pack a 4.1-megapixel, 3X- optical zoom camera into a hip little package a fraction the size of a candy bar. Their answer? The Cyber-shot DSC-L1 camera, an elegant confection that will come in four colors and finishes: brushed silver, dark blue matte, black and a striking dark red piano gloss.
The silver DSC-L1 camera will be available in mid-October, and the blue, black and red models will follow in January, each for about $300 .
Measuring 3 ¾” x 1 ¾” x 1” , the L1 model is powered by Sony's Real Imaging Processor™ circuitry, delivering outstanding shot-to-shot speed, stamina and quick start-up time for catching the action as soon as it happens.
For the first time in the ultra-compact class of digital cameras, the Cyber-shot L1 model delivers a 1.5-inch transflective LCD, making it easier to see what's on the LCD even in bright sunlight.
It also has a new Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® 3X optical zoom lens, setting the stage for picture quality typically delivered by larger, more expensive digital cameras.
“Decades of expertise in miniaturization have enabled us to achieve a balance between fashionable design and such advanced features as the world's smallest mechanical zoom lens,” said Greg Young, general manager for digital still camera marketing in Sony Electronics' Personal Mobile and Imaging Division. “But size and features are only half the story. In the L1 camera, we've also created something that's easy to grip and shoot, and takes outstanding pictures.”
Marrying High-Tech Features with Low-Tech Operation
Like all Cyber-shot cameras, the DSC-L1 model has speedy auto-focus and auto-exposure options to snap the best picture the first time. You can quickly select the best setting based on the shooting conditions by choosing from one of seven preset modes, including twilight, snow, beach and fireworks.
Four newly developed technologies – including a linear focus drive and a compact high-resolution optical system – combine to produce the ultra-small lens. This lets you zoom in for crisp images of a flower or zoom out for a far-away shot of the game-winning goal, all the while staying in sharp focus.
When used with Memory Stick PRO Duo ™ media, the L1 camera's high-quality MPEG Movie VX Fine mode captures and plays back high-resolution moving images with 640x480 pixel resolution at 30 frames per second, up to the capacity of the memory media card.
The L1 camera provides approximately 240 shots per charge of the InfoLithium™ battery, with a to-the-minute, on-screen display of remaining battery life.
Reveal New Sides to the Cyber-shot L1 Camera with Accessories
To get the most out of the new DSC-L1 camera, Sony will offer a variety of accessories, including:
• An accessory kit (ACC-CFT) with a leather carrying case and a spare battery;
• A leather carrying case (LCS-UP) that was designed specifically to protect the L1 camera;
• A gray polyurethane carrying case (LCS-UQ/H) designed for a more personal style statement; and
• A sportspack durable housing (LCS-UQ/H) to guard the camera in water up to three meters deep. It will be available in October for about $100.

The Sony Cybershot DSC-V3 has a 7.2 CCD megapixel sensor, a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 4x Optical Zoom, 2.5inch LCD, night shot infrared shooting as well as numerous other quality features. Steve's Digicams previews the DSC-V3 writing:
"The DSC-V3 provides a full range of exposure control that includes: Auto, Program AE, Shutter-speed priority, Aperture priority, Full Manual and 7 pre-programmed Scene modes. In addition it also offers the Sony exclusive Nightframing and NightShot modes which use its built-in infrared illuminators for image capture in total darkness up to 15 feet. To insure that the lens is always sharply focused, the DSC-V3 is equipped with Hologram AF illuminator that "paints" your subject with a safe laser pattern. Low-light shooting is further enhanced by slow-shutter noise reduction that produces the cleanest possible image."
Imaging Resource reviews the Sony Cybershot DSC-V3 and writes - 'With an improved build, greater speed, and a wonderfully large screen, the Sony DSC-V3 gives rangefinder lovers more of what they want a digital camera for, integrating some of the innovations we saw debut in the Sony F828. V1 fans will appreciate the new features, but some might not like the increased size. Since most of the increase is due to the addition of a handgrip, I don't mind so much.'
DC Resource reviews the Sony Cybershot DSC-V3 and writes - 'When used at the right settings, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-V3 takes very good photos that compare nicely to my 7 Megapixel camera of choice, the Canon PowerShot G6. A few days, I wouldn't have been able to say that, but after someone very knowledgeable pointed out the aperture issue I discussed above, my opinion changed. For whatever reason, the V3 likes to use small apertures (high F-numbers) outdoors, which dramatically reduces image quality. By forcing the camera to use a larger aperture (F4 worked great for me), I got much sharper photos. Colors were saturated, noise levels were comparable to other 7MP cameras, and purple fringing levels were low. I did, however, notice some vignetting in several of my photos.'
Lets Go Digital reviews the Sony Cybershot DSC-V3 and writes - 'Not one digital camera is perfect, neither is the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-V3. However, in our opinion, Sony had developed an outstanding camera with an excellent photo quality. The innovative technique on board of the DSC-V3 stands on a high level and is not found in competing models. All in all we may conclude that the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-V3 is truly recommendable to those who have high expectations concerning photo quality, colour rendition and the versatile applications.'
Steve's Digicams reviews the Sony Cybershot DSC-V3 and writes - 'With its 7-megapixel imager, responsive performance, and rich feature set, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-V3 promises a lot, and if most of your shooting occurs indoors you'll be satisfied. But venture outdoors and you'll find soft images at F8, significant distortion at wide angle, and difficulty in achieving shutter speeds faster than 1/1000 second.'
CNET reviews the Sony Cybershot DSC-V3 Digital Camera and writes - 'Part of the first generation of 7-megapixel digital cameras, Sony's DSC-V3 boasts a 4X Carl Zeiss zoom lens, a big 2.5-inch LCD, plenty of advanced features, and fairly sprightly performance. Though its image quality isn't absolutely top tier, it's still a potentially appealing choice for enthusiast photographers looking for a compact package.' Rating: 7.9
DP Review reviews the Sony Cybershot DSC-V3 and writes - 'Good AF improves lots of things, most notably shot to shot time which for the DSC-V3 was very fast indeed, just over a second. This camera's slowest function is startup which is down to a rather sluggish lens extension mechanism (Olympus seem to have this nailed). Otherwise there's virtually in the everyday use of the camera which will leave you tapping your fingers against the body in anticipation, it will be ready.'
Camera town reviews the Sony Cybershot DSC-V3 digital camera and writes - 'The design of the DSC-V3 allows you to quickly capture a scene the way YOU want. Too many cameras hide important “overrides” deep within their on-screen menus, making it less likely that you'll bother using them, not so on the DSC-V3. Place the camera in “P” or “Green” mode and the camera becomes as simple to use as any point & shoot camera. otherwise switch to shutter-, aperture-priority, or manual mode when you want to capture a scene the way you desire. In Tv (Shutter-Priority) mode you can increase the shutter speed to capture faster action, allowing the camera to automatically adjust the aperture to maintain proper exposure. In Av (Aperture-Priority) mode you can change the aperture size (f-stop) and the camera will automatically adjust the shutter speed. Switch to M (Manual) mode and set both independently.'
DP Expert reviews the Sony DSC-V3 and writes - 'Like this: This is an excellent camera for the serious photographer. The build quality and lens are outstanding. There is a flash shoe, which might be needed because the on-board flash is not powerful. The V3 takes both Sony Memory Stick and the cheaper Compact Flash memory.
Dislike that: Images at ISO400 are noticeably noisy (grainy). This seems to be the price to be paid for having 7 million photo receptors on a small area. It means that the ISO setting should normally be kept at 100/200.'
Providing all the versatility of a much larger camera, the V3 is a compact, classic rangefinder-style camera featuring a large easy-to-handle grip. The new design incorporates a 2.5-inch LCD viewfinder, providing more room than ever before to see and share images the moment they are captured.
“The Cyber-shot DSC-V3 model is for a special class of photographer that wants creative control over the picture-taking process in an ultra-portable package,” said Greg Young, general manager for digital still camera marketing in Sony Electronics' Personal Mobile and Imaging Division
Fast and Responsive
The new camera is powered by Sony's recently introduced Real Imaging Processor™ circuitry that ensures fast start-up and shot-to-shot times of just over a second, providing increased speed and performance for automatic features like auto focus and auto exposure. Breathtaking still photographs are only part of the picture. When used with Memory Stick PRO Ô media, the V3 camera also captures and plays back high resolution moving images in MPEG-VX Fine mode, with 640x480 pixel resolution at 30 frames per second up to the capacity of the media card .
The V3 model employs a rechargeable InfoLithium® battery system for quick recharging time, which means that you will spend less time charging and more time taking pictures, up to 260 shots per charge.
Packed with versatility, the DSC-V3 camera can satisfy the needs of even the most discerning hobbyist. In addition to dual media slots that accept Memory Stick and Compact Flash I media formats for storing hundreds of photos, this new camera can record in the RAW format, which preserves the original data recorded to the CCD and provides extensive control over the image editing process.
Capturing action shots is made easier with high-speed burst (SDRAM) mode, which can capture up to eight full-resolution images at more than two frames per second. Additional features include:
Resolution: Sony's 7.2-megapixel CCD image sensor provides the Cyber-shot DSC-V3 camera with a maximum image size of 3072 x 2304, equating into 8.5 x 11-inch prints at 300 dpi.
Manual Exposure Controls: Flexible exposure control is provided with aperture priority, shutter priority and manual exposure modes for better command over motion and depth of field.
Hologram AF™ Illuminator: Projects a laser pattern on the subject to create contrast for precise focus, even in low or no light.
Multi-Pattern Measuring: Independently meters the light in 49 points of the frame to establish the optimum exposure, even when highlight and shadow aren't centered in the frame.
Hot Shoe: Communicates mode and exposure information to the accessory flash components, including Sony's HVl-F32X external flash or other studio flash systems.
NightShot Infrared System: Captures infrared images in total darkness at a distance of up to 15 feet.
NightFraming System: To capture crisp images in low or no light, this feature illuminates the subject with the NightShot system for proper framing, focuses with Hologram AF illuminator and lights the scene with the appropriate amount of flash.
Printing one or many images is easy with the DSC-V3 camera, which is PictBridge ™ compatible. Connect the camera to a PictBridge enabled printer, such as Sony's new PictureStation Ô DPP-FP30, and printing is as simple as pressing the print button.

The HP Photosmart M307 is a 3.2 megapixel digital camera with a 3x Optical Zoom lens, large 4.3cm LCD screen, 'Intstant Share' (enabling easy sharing, printing and saving of images) and 16MB internal storage.
DigiCamReview reviews the HP Photosmart M307 and writes - 'Image Quality: This is where the camera is let down - the images have quite dull colour and lack contrast. Images also suffer from quite high noise levels even on sunny days. Detail can be quite good, with fairly sharp images assuming lighting conditions are good. There seems to be a higher amount of purple fringing than normal. There is a fairly poor range of image sizes and compression options. The macro mode is average. The flash didn't cause problems when the subject was close. Auto white balance and metering seemed to be okay. The movie mode is better than average, at 30fps with sound. When inside, the camera does an okay job of focusing, the flash is fairly decent, but images do suffer from noise, and low contrast.'

Megapixel reviews the HP Photosmart R607 and writes - 'The Hewlett-Packard Photosmart R607 is designed to be an easy to use camera. This bias is reflected in every aspect of the camera: by default, it is designed to reset itself to everyday settings whenever it is turned off, preventing the forgetful or occasional user from accidentally ruining their shot. Similarly, the R607 is equipped with a huge library of built-in help that can assist a novice with every aspect of the camera, or its functions, or even with basic photographic concepts.'
Cameratown Reviews the HP R607 digital camera and writes - 'The HP Photosmart R607 is certainly quite an impressive little number, especially for a camera of its class – lots of great features with just about everything you can imagine, on-camera advice and guidelines, and all packed in to one small-but-mighty unit. Although, I did discover one thing in particular that I would like to see revised in a future generation. While in video mode, one of the first things that jumped out at me was the obvious hissing over the captured audio clip, heard not only in playback mode when previewed on the camera’s LCD but also during video review after download to my computer. However, I wouldn’t hold that against the R607. Hp has definitely packed a lot into one pocket-sized camera, while providing on-camera instruction and ease-of-use. I definitely enjoyed it.'
CNET has posted a review of the HP PhotoSmart R607 where they give it a rating of 6.5 (Good) out of 10. They write - 'The HP Photosmart R607 is a competent enough entry in the 4-megapixel compact camera arena, with acceptable image quality, a speedy burst mode, and a 3X Pentax zoom lens. It's seasoned with enough quirky features to please the most gizmo-crazy budding photographer. Some of the options in this camera's cornucopia are only marginally useful in practice--the Aperture-Priority mode lets you select from just two apertures, for example. But others, such as Adaptive Lighting, which brightens dark shadows, and the Image Advice feature that diagnoses your pictures and offers fixes for common problems, are especially valuable for neophytes. However, a skimpy complement of scene modes, a 1.5-inch LCD that's too small for comfortable viewing, and a minimovie mode that really is mini at 288x216 pixels are the chief drawbacks to this otherwise capable and fun-to-use package.'

Instant and care-free fun with the new Mega-Image VII
Braunschweig, 17th August 2004 - Another new Mega-Image camera model is entering the Yakumo camera range in September and celebrating its market debut. The Mega-Image VII is a digital snapshot camera with super slim measurements of 86 x 55 x 25mm. This cool silver coloured camera weighs only 85g and can easily fit into the palm of the owner’s hand, his trouser or shirt pocket or her handbag. It also goes easy on the budget. The Mega-Image VII will be available mid September at all Yakumo dealers and have the tiny price tag of 79 euros.
At that price it doesn’t hurt to make the glove compartment of the car the home of the Mega-Image VII. That guarantees that when on the road, valuable moments and interesting motives can be quickly put into pixel. On the other hand, the camera’s features make it worthy of more than just second place. With 3.10 megapixel CMOS (7.0 megapixel interpolated), the 1.5" TFT display, the 8x digital zoom, webcam, video clip, flash and self-timing functions alongside the extendable memory via SD or MM cards, the camera qualifies as a low-cost entry model for people chasing spontaneous photo fun.
Ulead Photo Explorer 8.0 SE, Ulead Video Studio 7.0 SE and Ulead Cool 360 are bundled with the Mega-Image VII and are interesting software tools for users who want to make more of their photo creativity.
Two AAA batteries take care of the power supply and are delivered with the Mega-Image VII alongside a camera case, a strap, a USB cable and a video cable, a quick start guide a CD with drivers and manual and the Ulead software.
Yakumo Press Release
Licence to zoom - the new Yakumo Mega-Image 84 D.
Braunschweig, 17th August 2004- Yakumo's latest addition to the Mega-Image family is the new Mega-Image 84 D. This camera is aiming at enthusiastic amateur photographers who have a low budget and high expectations. The Mega-Image 84 D now takes on the role of top model in the Yakumo camera range and offers high performance optics at an amazingly low price of 249 euros. In September, the Mega-Image 84 D will become available at all Yakumo dealers.
The pride and joy of the new Mega-Image 84 D is the autofocus lens which has an 8x optical zoom (35mm equivalent: 39.88 - 319 mm) which lets the photographer zoom in on distant objects and not be limited to his immediate surroundings. The additional 4x digital zoom adds further to the close-up capabilities of the camera.
A CCD sensor with 4.0 megapixel (effective) lies at the heart of the Mega-Image 84 D and makes photos with a maximal resolution of up to 3264 x 2448 pixels possible. For photographers who like to put their own personal hallmark and individual touch on their photo results, the Mega-Image 84 D has a range of manual settings, e.g. if desired, the white balance to alter the colour temperature for different photographic situations and the exposure setting for up to 14 modes can be adjusted manually. And the lens aperture can be set from F2.8 to F 5.5 (wide angle) and from F3.41 to F6.82 (telephoto). The shutter speed ranges from 16 to 1/2000 secs. The built-in, pop-up flash takes care of red-eye reduction and can be set to force on, slow and off positions. The Mega-Image 84 D can also be used to take video clips and with the handy self-timer function it lets the camera man get in on the act.
16 megabytes of memory are standard with the camera and they can be optionally extended to 512 megabytes using SD or MM cards. USB 2.0 full speed makes the data transfer of photo files and video clips to PC or notebook a speedy procedure. For creative finishing touches, Yakumo supplies the Ulead software Photo Explorer 8.0 SE, Video Studio 7.0 SE and Cool 360, which make album compilation and post-editing of photos an easy and fun task.
The Yakumo Mega-Image 84 D comes equipped with 4 AA batteries, a USB and a video cable, a lens cap, a shoulder strap and a manual alongside a CD containing the software and drivers.
