The paint is peeling and stains have appeared on its famous lattice design. Accelerating the deterioration of the iconic National Stadium is the absence of a permanent tenant. [...]

Paralympics gets under away

The opening ceremony for the Paralympics was held last night in Beijing. The ceremony was spectacular but perhaps not on the scale of the ceremony for the Beijing Olympics. Most of the show was performed by people with disabilities, including Li Yue, who lost her left leg in the Sichuan earthquake and performed [...]

Beijing ticket scammers getting ready for London

The ticket scammers who defrauded people by selling non-existent tickets through the internet are getting ready for the Vancouver and London Olympics. “I was shocked by the brilliance and hard work of the thieves fleecing the Olympic family — and they are setting up to do the same thing in Vancouver in 2010 and London in [...]

Beijing’s answer to pollution - cloud seeding

Beijing did a lot to improve the air quality leading up to the Beijing Olympics, with mixed results. The days before the opening ceremony were pretty bad, but a burst of rain cleared the air and pollution became less of a talking point. Almost straight after the closing ceremony the hazy skies returned. A [...]

Beijing has 6.52 million visitors for the Olympics

Beijing recorded 6.52 million visitors for the 2008 Olympics, with 382,000 of those coming from overseas. Authorities long estimated that 500,000 foreigners would visit the city, but tougher visa controls reduced that number. Michael Phelps living up to the hype

"With a pair of gold medals in the pool at the Athens Olympics Tuesday, American teen swimming sensation Michael Phelps has truly emerged from the shadow of Mark Spitz.

Phelps now has three gold and two bronze in Athens, and still has a shot at tying gymnast Alexander Dityatin's Olympic record of eight medals in one Games.

The 19-year-old from Baltimore started his golden day by taking the 200 metre butterfly in an Olympic record 1:54.04 seconds. Later, his strong lead swim helped the U.S. edge Australia in the 4x200 freestyle relay."

Hey Michael just wanted to say congrats for everything you've accomplished so far. So are you still trying to meet the record of eight medals at an olympics like Mark Spitz? About two years ago I was trainning to be in the 2008 Olympics for swimming, however I injuried both knees in school sports so now I'm trying to work back towards the goal of being in the 2008 Olympics again. You're story has inspired me to get back in the pool. Thanks.

Hey Michael,
You did a fantastic job of swimming ,and I admire your hard work that you put in for it.
I was in my living room with my parents and we all cheered for you in every race you were in.
Even cheered when they had re-plays of you swimming.
I wish you the best of luck , and know that you have many fans who support you , and love you.
You are a wonderful example to all teenagers ,and children. You show how hard it is to chase your dreams ,and to have them.
One day I will have my dream too . I will be a singer, and maybe one day you can sponsor me. :)

Michael, from what I understand you do not go to college...are you planning to go back to school? What were your SAT scores? Are you a vegetarian? Have you ever considered becoming a vegetarian? Do you ever get tired of being in a pool? How do you eat as many calories as you eat? Maybe if you try a vegetarian diet you will be able to beat that stupid Aussie Thorpe in the 200 free (btw I have nothing against Aussies) Why do you wear your jammer so low on the hips? (btw I do like it-keep it low)Does your buttcrack show when you bend over? Can I slip a carrot there? You know, Andre 3000 was voted sexiest vegetarian, but you would so win if you went veggie. Well good luck in the future and stay off the meat!

You make America, especailly by beating the Aussies, except for that Thorpe, but no worries! :D

Hi Michael. In my speech class we have to do an introduction speech for a famous (or not famous) person. We have to tell a little about their life and accomplishments. The audience of my speech is for high school students and I said you would be talking about drunk driving (i heard about the DUI thing and how you want to talk to teens about it). I'm so excited! I'm gonna try to get an "A". My speech is on Thursday and I hope 2 update u on what grade i get! I've been swimming since I was a baby (and on a team since I was 8). Swimming is my favorite sport! I agree with the other gurl...I'm vegetarian & if u went vegetarian u would b the #1 Vegetarian Hottie! LOL 4 real!! :) I like that u let Ian take ur place in that relay! That wuz really nice of u. ~ThankS~
