"MARION JONES looked serene, immaculate, and collected, as she leapt into the women's Olympic long jump final at the second attempt last night.
Nobody would have thought this was the woman who is the most high profile target of the global anti-doping machine.
Yet the muted ripple of applause which she received when she reached 6.70 metres at the second attempt suggested the crowd's love affair with the triple Olympic champion of Sydney is cooling. This was five centimetres beyond the mandatory qualifying distance, also surpassed by Britain's European and Commonwealth silver medallist, Jade Johnson.
"It went very good," she said afterwards. "It is pretty much anybody's game. My first jump was over seven metres, but it was a foul. I am just so excited. I really can't wait."
She may yet have another shot at gold. "I wanted to be on the track, but it didn't work out this year as planned. "I'm in the long jump final, maybe I'll get a shot in the relay. We'll see."
Her task was made easier by the big-name failures: Niurka Montalvo, the 1999 world champion, two-time former champion Fiona May, and reigning champion Eunice Barber."
