Only six months has passed since the Beijing Olympics and the Birds Nest stadium which hosted the spectacular opening and closing ceremonies is already beginning to lose its shine. The opening ceremony for the Paralympics was held last night in Beijing. The ceremony was spectacular but perhaps not on the scale of the ceremony for the Beijing Olympics. Beijing did a lot to improve the air quality leading up to the Beijing Olympics, with mixed results. The days before the opening ceremony were pretty bad, but a burst of rain cleared the air and pollution became less of a talking point. Beijing recorded 6.52 million visitors for the 2008 Olympics, with 382,000 of those coming from overseas. Authorities long estimated that 500,000 foreigners would visit the city, but tougher visa controls reduced that number. "Veteran sprinter Frankie Fredericks said he would retire from athletics after this week's Olympic 200 meters event in Athens.
The Namibian 36-year-old, who has won four Olympic silver medals in a 20-year sprinting career, was fastest in his first round heat on Tuesday in a time of 20.54 seconds.
"This is it; the end of the 200 is the end of my career," said Fredericks, who failed to qualify for Sunday's 100 meters final.
"I will go home and spend time with my family."
Fredericks, Namibia's only Olympic medallist, finished second at both 100 and 200 meters in Barcelona in 1992 and in Atlanta in 1996, where Donovan Baily and Michael Johnson both set world records in the events.
He missed the Sydney Games in 2000 due to injury."
