Birds Egg stadium already losing its shine

Only six months has passed since the Beijing Olympics and the Birds Nest stadium which hosted the spectacular opening and closing ceremonies is already beginning to lose its shine. The paint is peeling and stains have appeared on its famous lattice design. Accelerating the deterioration of the iconic National Stadium is the absence of a permanent tenant. [...]

Eights slump as Sally Robbins stops rowing

"The Australian women's eight bid for Olympic gold ended in tears when a crew member stopped rowing before the finish.

Team officials said coach Harald Jarhling was furious after Sally Robbins lay back with a quarter of the race to go and dropped her oar about 100m from the finish line.

The crew were third at the 1000 metre mark but dropped back to fifth by 1500, crossing the line almost 10 seconds after the fifth place-getters, Germany.

Robbins was exhausted, not ill or injured, and an Australian official quoted Jarhling as saying he had not seen anything like it in his 35-year coaching career.

She had to be helped from the boat.

"I just rowed my guts out in the first 1,500 and didn't have anything left and that's all I could have done for today," Robbins said.

"I did whatever I could and my best was what I put out there today and I plan to keep rowing.

"This experience only makes me stronger."

Robbins said she had not had a chance to talk to her crew mates but she was sure they would be supportive.

"I will just say (to them) that I did everything I could," she said.

"This is what I could do today and I put 110 per cent in, and that's what everyone does.""

Sally Robbins Motto is very interesting and as follows:

Motto: Never surrender the dream

Yeah Right! She is a dissapointment and a disgrace to her team!.
She should quit her role (she's good at it) and let the other 8 girls bring someone good!

Posted by: Andrew G at August 25, 2004 09:48 AM

This isn't the first time she's done this... she IS unaustralian, and should be shipped off to New Zealand...

Posted by: Ashley at August 25, 2004 11:02 AM

Sally has really nice hair and she tried her best.

Posted by: at August 25, 2004 11:57 AM

Hey...we don't want her in New Zealand...flick her off to the French perhaps!!!

Posted by: Robert G at August 25, 2004 05:24 PM

the olympics is about courage, dedication and commitment. sally slacked off, she's done it before and she'll do it again. i'd dump her in the drink too - loser.

Posted by: smith at August 25, 2004 05:49 PM

hey - maybe you could send her to the yanks... they might want her?

Posted by: paul at August 25, 2004 05:53 PM

Her behaviour was typically selfish and gutless like many of the spoilt kids of her generation.

Posted by: peter at August 26, 2004 09:14 AM

the "yanks", as you call us, don't want her. It is more like the French to give up so send her there. She should fit in nicely.

Get a life people, the inly UN-Australian thing here is turning on her when she needs your support the most.

Sally has let herself and her team mates down. Granted. No-one can change this now, it is something she will have to live with always. To call her un-Australian, a loser and a disgrace is not going to help anyone. She simply is NOT un-Australian, she is competing at the olympic games for her nation, and has represented her country so many times in the past with much honour and success. I love Australia, but it makes me sick how quickly members of our community, whom 90% of have never bothered to get out of their armchairs and compete on any level, will stick a knife in when things go wrong. That is "UN-AUSTRALIAN". Anyone who gets on here with the sole purpose of putting down Sally Robbins needs to take a really long hard look at themselves, as they are the only LOSERS in this forum! I also welcome all feedback with great anticipation....

Posted by: Andrew at August 26, 2004 02:13 PM

The so-called un-Australians are couch potato critics who should acknowledge the efforts our athletes go through to achieve their dream.

Posted by: GRAHAM at August 26, 2004 02:18 PM

The only Un- Australian thing here is the way the other eight crew members had responded, as Nick Green said even if sally robbins didnt stop rowing the best they could do would be fifth and fouth if they put in a tremendous effort.

Posted by: Andrew. K at August 26, 2004 04:17 PM

Sally robbins was only trying to do her best and she did.Sally rowed her hardest and lost all of her energy.Sally robbins didn't do anything wrong.

Posted by: Emily vella at August 26, 2004 04:57 PM

I think she should give up and let some one else better join the team because this is the second time it has happened.

Posted by: Riss at August 26, 2004 07:40 PM

i think that it wasnt sally's fault but the IOC/AOC because they chose her and they knew that she stopped in her last important race.

Posted by: Lily at August 26, 2004 08:05 PM

I am an Aussie living in New Zealand.
I still go by my earlier post on this subject. However I do not think it is un-Australian just un sporting of her...she's done it twice now and if I was one of the others in that boat I certainly would never forgive her. I suggest that she will be remembered by this event much the same as the under-arm bowling incident of Mr Chappell....
I do not feel that any of us have to justify our comments to the posting of Paul...we are all entitled to our opinions...however in all my endeavours in life I have never given up like Sally did.

Posted by: Robert G at August 26, 2004 08:46 PM

I'd have to agree with Paul and Andrew in their above comments. You and I really have no right to judge someone for their efforts in the Olympics. I bet 99% of you who has contributed negatively cant do anything close to what she had done. Yes, she may have let her team down in the most prestigeous game, BUT at least she was out there in the begining, showing YOU negative minded individuals, that she could be out there competing for Australia, the country I love (minus the taxes =)) and giving the best of herself. I hope, for your sake, the people who like to sit on their rear ends, think deeply about what you have said and correct yourself.
By the way...... I cant remember the olympics being about the BEST... I ONLY know it to "Celebrate Humanity - www.olympic.org)

Did Sally stop rowing in a previous race? I have heard much comment on this fact, but I am yet to see any evidence. An AOC delegate has gone on record, stating that he attended the 2002 World championship regatta, in which Sally allegedly stopped rowing in the final of the women's quad skull. He stated that he also has a copy of the DVD of the regatta including the race in question. Now to his recollection, and the vision on the DVD, Sally rowed every race the full distance. I think we should all stop trying to lay blame and consider for a minute what this girl has achieved (minus this latest moment), world championship wins, Australian Olympic team member and PROUD AUSSIE! Get down off your high horses and give one of our great athletes some support. I'd have Sally in my crew any day!

Posted by: Andrew at August 27, 2004 02:47 PM

I rowed for my country in the mid 90's and I can not begin to explain how bad I feel for the other 8 girls in that boat. Their Olympic dream has ended in a heartbreaking way thanks to the selection committee and Sally Robbins.

I really am at a loss for words when it comes to explaing what those girls have gone through.

Come back stronger girls! Sally - stay the hell away from Australian rowing and stop avoiding the truth. It is your fault.

athens games i would say has been a great success. though i would want to point out a few draw-backs to the highly successful games.
1. the gym. fed. had no reason to tell the american gym athelete to return his medal. if indeed there was an error, its all part of the games. maradona's handball goal gave argentina the world cup in 1986 and they were never told to replay the match or concede the match to england.
2. what were security operatiuves doing when a lunatic attacked a brazillian athelete. the greeks should apologise to the brazillian delegation.
3. if indeed the games were to promote love and peace, then the demonstration against the visit of powell is not only an act of jealosy to the americans but also very shameful on their part.
thanks.

Get rid of her - if she doesn't know how to wax her upper lip, how can she be expected to row.

Posted by: Con Dom at August 30, 2004 12:55 PM

How can you ppl say this. She tried her best and soo if she failed if she does it again then u know shes doing it for fun or shes just tired. I say GIVE HER ANOTHER CHANCE she deserves it. She prob has medical issues leave it.

SHES AN AUSTRALIA CIZITEN LET IT BE!!!!

Posted by: Gabzo at August 30, 2004 04:23 PM

i think that sally is a spunk and that she tried her hardest
and in regards to everyone who sed that she is UN-AUSTRALIAN Olympic cheif John Coates said reminding athletes of their behaviour standards contained in their team agreement.
Coates said that is is UN-AUSTRALIAN for ATHLETES TO PUBLICITY CRITICISE TEAM-MATES.
So to all that have criticised Sally, YOU are actually the UN-AUSTRALIANS.

Posted by: soph at August 30, 2004 05:40 PM

sally robbins should not be picked for the australian rowing next olympics. she probably cost australia a gold medal.

Posted by: jimbo at August 30, 2004 06:55 PM

i would like to say im a rower myself and as a cox what those rowers where saying to that girl where worse then school girl rowing and that is a statement but with sally robbins giving up soo close to the finish let down the team with them actually coming a place this is probably what they have worked for ever since they relised their real dreams which probably started since school girl rowing which in my books is a hell of a long time well thats my point so thanks bye now

Posted by: helen hobson at August 30, 2004 07:48 PM

No one knows the truth of why Sally stopped rowing except Sally herself; The rest of us can only surmise. As to what happened, it is probably an indication that the AOC screwed up big time in selecting Sally for the team as she was (now obviously) unprepared to compete at that level; whatever the case, and no matter where the blame lies (and not all of it lies with Sally, although she should come in for her fair share of it), she remains Australian. The reaction of her team mates, while understandable, was wrong. The Olympics are over at any rate and let this be a lesson to ye all because if it isn't IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. my .02$

Whoa back there people! I am amused by your summations of the Sally Robbins event. as a former rower I have a thorough understanding of the situation. (a) Whether you are in the year 9 tenth crew or the Olympic VIII you DO NOT STOP ROWING. Having said that (b) you do not bag your crewmates in public or to the media. For Rachael Taylor- you are a disgrace to the Australian Sporting fraternity and before you shot off at the mouth and publically condemned Sally to the worldwide media, perhaps you should have considered your own poor form in being ousted from the Australian team due to...SMOKING. You too, let your crewmates down by degrading your own health and therefore aerobic capacity. And Harald Jahrling (coach of the Womens' VIII) go back to Germany where you belong- your eastern bloc mentality is not welcome here, neither is your lack of professionalism and integrity in mis-managing your crew in a crisis situation.

Hi Guys,
Sally does have pretty hair & she was clearly working the hardest & only stopped rowing because I had enough I mean shed had enough! So she'd just like to say that yes, I am Australian & a hot one at that.

Love Sally anonymous
P.S. I do wax my upper lip I just happen to have hormonal issues which has no effect whatsoever on my rowing.

Posted by: Sally Robbins at August 31, 2004 02:37 PM

Sally should never have been selected in the race crew. She obviously has issues dealing with stress and has been seeing a psychologist for this reason for a while. To be a world class athlete you face these situations every day, at training or in competition. Handling it 90% of the time is not good enough especially when you are in a team. I would be surprised if any of the other crew rowed with her again. Sad.. very sad!

Posted by: Nick at August 31, 2004 03:51 PM

Sally Robbins tried her best and should be congratulated on her effort.

Just kidding! Sally Robbins is the worst rower in Australia. Ship her off to Canada where they need athletes but they won't do them any good.

For all those people who support Sally Robbins I believe you are Un-Australian! Sally has no determination and no committment to her team. The other rowers have a right to be angry as they have trained so hard and have been let down by a selfish, weak hearted person. She has done it before so they should have go rid of her ages ago. And not all Australians not competing in the olympics sit on the sofa all day. We know what committment and determination is about but Sally obviously does not.

The two finest Olympic moments ever were (1) Gabrielle Anderson-Scheiss entering the olympic stadium and completing the 1984 marathon. She gave more honour to Switzerland by finishing that marathon than a dozen gold medals ever could. Her 400m lap of the stadium to finish the marathon took over 5 minutes as she struggled with heat prostration.

(2) British athlete Derek Redmond in a semifinal of the 400m in Barcelona. 150m into the race his hamstring tore and he fell to the ground clutching his leg. He got to his feet, waved the stretcher bearers away and hopped to the finish line in agony, helped by his father for much of the last 100 metres. Interviewed by the media later he commented that he felt ashamed to lie on the ground for he was in the Olympic semifinals, and as the culmination of his life's efforts, he was obligated to himself to finish the race.

In total contrast, Paula Radcliffe, in pulling out of both the marathon and the 10,000m because she wasnt feeling right, says nothing other than she never deserves to win an Olympic medal. She simply doesnt have the Olympic Spirit.

And neither does Sally Robbins. Unlike Paula Radcliffe, who let down herself and he country, Sally Robbins also let down her 8 teammates. Far few people above have commented that these other 8 girls devoted years of their life to this one event. All their efforts to do the best they could were spat on by Robbins. Who cares if they could have won, or like Redmond and Anderson-Scheiss ended in glorious failure. But to give up is pathetic. There is no way she can claim she had no more to give. Derek Redmond had more to give after his collapse. Gabrielle Anderson-Scheiss had more to give despite being buckled over in agony. For Sally to say she had no more to give is a shameful attempt to weasel out of responsibility, that compounds the shameful withdrawal of effort.

There is no dignity or honour in quitting, yet ironically the greatest glory, honour and dignity of all can come from failure, as Derek Redmond and Gabrielle Anderson-Scheiss have shown.

Even if she would look OK bent over the armrest of your favourite sofa, with her G around her ankles ...

Posted by: Roger Mellie at September 1, 2004 09:35 PM

Will you guys get over her hair! Judge her on her merits, and previous experience. When the selection committee selected her they should've known that if she previously "hit the wall," she could possibly do it again in Athens.

Australia, give Sally the boot...literally!

I dont think people should be so rude about the whole situation..shes australian and we should be here for her!! It's not her fault she collapsed and i think people are being too rude about it!! If the selector and coach of the rowers has a problem with it.. y did they pik her to go to the olympics?? if it has happened 4 times before, dont you think they would be aware.. she may improve before the next olympics.. and i think she should be able to go to the next olympics..the olympics may be about winning for yourself/group mates or for Australia but thats not the only thing that matters its all about sportsmanship and team work.. and i believe shes a very brave and confident girl and i would just like to say i am not concerned that we lost the rowing i am just happy that you got there.. they tryed the best that they could and no one can turn bak time so i think its time for the people that are really concerned about it should give they forgivness and there help towards her instead of all being so selfish, she dosent need this!! shes a great woman and no one can take her place!!
and all tha pplz that disgaree use r very selfish pplz and plz keep tha bad comments to ur self!!

Thank-you

this is my last comment for u We love the way u row keep trying and practicing and then u will be the best rower yet

Posted by: Go ROBBINS! this is my last comment for u We love the way u row keep trying and practicing and then at September 13, 2004 08:58 PM

Those of you who put down Sally Robbins ought to try getting off your butts and try out rowing for yourselfs, and I guarantee you guys wouldnt be able to hack it. Sally is talented, unlike you. It's "Unaustralian" as you say, to put someone down in that way. Do you put a gold medal in higher priority to a team mate's well being? If you do, hang your heads in shame, like her crew should. They acted like a bunch of 3rd formers who just got dobbed in.

Posted by: Alex at September 14, 2004 02:23 PM

I actually think there should be more athletes like Sally Robbins in Australia. At least that way New Zealand might have a chance to win more medals.

Having lived in Australia for a period of time now I can quite honestly say that I am glad I an NOT an Australian. Don't get me wrong, I love this country and for a long time had been counting the time until I could become a citizen.

What this has taught me is that I love the fact that I don't have the small minded and petty attitude that many 'Australians' have. For those who have commented negatively, I hope one day you are fortunate enough to have a large part of your own country abuse you over something as TRIVIAL as a Rowing event.

Grow up and get a life. You lot claim that the English whinge - have you heard yourselves?

The rest of the team are taking the flak for a rower, or should I say quitter. In my book she should only be forgiven if she was carried off the boat unconcious. They should have tipped her out of the boat. Australians always proudly stand up for the underdog....but not the Sally Robbins kind. Good luck to the rest of the team...go girls

What is wrong with u people...why ARE you people taking the side of Sally Robbins...the girls worked so hard for years, only for that selfish cow to toss it in...too tired...phtt!!!

Posted by: JP at September 18, 2004 12:33 AM

Hi everyone, leave sally alone, she is easily the best looking of the crew, lets be frank, she is good in that department! I totally feel for her and I dont know why she stopped, but it was not giving up, we will never know. The crew are being complete B#ITCHes, and should be ashamed of then selves. Why are girls always like that?

I can't help but notice that people have used this forum to spred personal rimours and what not. The sally robbins issue is a very important one, don't we believe in forgiveness, australia is a proud nation and to participate on a world level it means u have to earn your place and sally did that. yes she let her team mates down on the day but do u really think she wanted to, it is a human nature to give in and i have no doubt she held on for as long as physically possible in her circumstances. let us not dwell on the past and look towards choosing the best team and prepartion for beijing

i reckon sally robbins is hot and should get away with quitting by like sleeping with the selectors or other team memebers and sell the video to raise funds to train her

I think James meade is a homosexual to use Joel Phillips name to make a really gay joke

Posted by: james meade at October 4, 2004 03:14 PM

is that hard for people to understand, sally robbins is a joke, she gave up destroying her crews chances after all their hard work for the most part of their lives. just because she is so incompetant and ruin the great expeirence which is the olympics for her other crew members, doesn't mean she should get sympathy for anyone, because i know if i saw her walking down the street i'd have a go at her, and to the people that say its australia to have a go at her, wasn't it more unaustralian of her to give up wen it got hard????

Posted by: daniel at October 16, 2004 09:00 PM

to all u people saying all this "unaustralian" crap maybe you should take a good look in the mirror. are any of you's in the olympics representing our country? NO! was she? YES! she put in all that she had and i would like to see you do a better job so before you start saying stuff about being "unaustralian" think about the fact that she was good enough to be there and she put in all that she had and would it have made a difference to the medal tally? no we would have still been fourth! get your facts straight before you say sh** and is it australian to pay out on other australians?? NO! so whos unaustralian now???

Posted by: steph at October 18, 2004 09:09 PM

i agree, sally robbins is a really nice girl, the eight have trained down with my squad before... and i can tell you that they are so close

my coach said (and we can all agree that we have head this at some point) that he cant count the ammount of times he has heard a woman say "geese women are b*tches"
so wot if they were letting off some steam
kyeema was back at the club the other day, as her usual self... they're all over it, so why dont u get over it?
sally did her best... harold should have let her see a sports psychologist
they're a young crew, they have heaps left in them, theyre far from theyre peak
why does the crew who was going to get fourth get so much publicity... what about the amazing champions tompkins and ginn?
thats my 2c

Posted by: luke at October 23, 2004 02:28 PM

i think that sally rules she's better than whoever wrote all the trash, UP THERE at least!! I bet you guys couldn't even be as good as sal, let alone row. HA! GO SALLY WE LOVE U!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: qwertyuiopasdfghjklzxcvbnm at November 6, 2004 03:33 PM

Sally, I thik you need to figure out how to redeem yourself pretty quick smart love. What you did was indeed heartless and un-Ausitralian. A professional rower such as yourself should be capable of pacing yourself correctly for an Olympic performance. There is simpy no excuse. You need to admit fault, and then go out and prove yourself to Australia in a single scull capacity (so as to not have other crew relying on you for a third time) or simply run and hide!
