"Indonesia’s hopes of improving its medal tally in the Athens Olympics came to an abrupt end after its taekwondo stars were eliminated on Thursday (26/8/04), while earlier the country’s entrants in the men’s sailing and women’s cycling failed to finish among the place getters.
In the women’s taekwondo under 49 kilogram category, Indonesia’s Juana Wangsa Putri was defeated 2-3 in the qualifying round 16 by Columbia’s Gladys Alicia Mora Romero.
Wangsa Putri had been widely expected to win a medal as she finished first in the world qualification tournament in Paris last December. "

"No expense will be spared to turn taekwondo exponent Elaine Teo into a medal contender in the Athens Olympics. And that includes turning her into a lady of the night.
National coach R. Dhanaraj plans to have Elaine, who will be making her debut in Athens, to start training from midnight onwards starting from next week.
“That is what I have in mind before we leave for Athens. She will have about a two-hour session from midnight until she leaves for Athens. She will not train in the morning,” said Dhanaraj.
“I believe that the new time will benefit her because I want to get her to adjust to the competition schedule in Athens.
“Her competition will be at exactly the same time in Malaysia. Besides, it is a fresh approach. Her training currently is high in intensity but not as long as when she was in South Korea,” he added.
Dhanaraj said he hopes the Malaysian Taekwondo Association (MTA), which will meet on Monday, will approve the plan. "

Sports network has a good Olympic profile of US Taekwondo star Steven Lopez.
"Although taekwondo isn't one of the more popular Olympic events, the success of Steven Lopez and his siblings are bringing the spotlight to the sport.
Lopez won the gold medal in the featherweight class four years ago in Sydney. He is probably the most decorated taekwondo competitor in the world and is ranked No. 1 in the welterweight division, in which he will compete in Athens in August.
A 25-year-old from Sugar Land, Texas, Lopez comes from a long line of family members who participate in taekwondo. All of his siblings have been at the world elite level, brothers Jean and Mark, and sister Diana. Mark was in the same weight class as Steven, but lost in the semifinals of the U.S. Olympic trials. Had Mark won he would have faced off against his brother."
Sports Network have yet another good introduction to Olympic Taekwondo complete with history and tips of who to watch in Taekwondo events in Athens.
'Korea and Chinese Taipei figure to dominate the medal board in Athens, but there will also be at least one hometown favorite for the Greeks. Michalis Mouroutsis won the gold medal in the 58kg category in 2000 and will challenge Spain's Juan Antonio Ramos and Chu Mu Yen of Chinese Taipei.'
Eurosport has a good introduction to Olympic Taekwondo .
"Depending on how we look at it, taekwondo is either 43 or 2000 years old. The sport go its today’s name and rules in 1957, but already ancient Korean tombs show pictures and drawings of men fighting without arms....
An Olympic Taekwondo contest goes over three rounds of three minutes with a break of one minute in between. There are 4 ways to win such a fight: a knock out, gaining more points than the opponent, disqualification or if the opponent gets three penalty points.
Besides the head, the scoring areas include one on the abdomen and one on each side of the body. All three are marked on the opponent's body protector.
Each legitimate strike is rewarded one point, half a point or a full point deduction for a penalty – depending on how serious the penalty is."
American Steven Lopez, who won gold in 68kg in Sydney, will try for another medal in the 80kg weight class. Greece's Michalis Mouroutsos will try to defend his 2000 gold medal in 58kg on his home turf.
