"Thousands of Argentine fans, still hung over from their basketball team's upset of Team USA, showed up 12 hours later for an unusually early men's Olympic soccer final. Their bleary eyes witnessed history. Argentina, off the foot of rising star Carlos Tevez, beat Paraguay 1-0 for its first gold medal in any sport in 52 years.
The last time the Argentine anthem, "Oid Mortales," was heard at the Olympics was in Helsinki in 1952, when Argentina won a double sculls rowing gold. As the light blue and white flag made its way up the flag pole Saturday, Argentine players and fans belted out the anthem proudly. After an early exit in the 2002 World Cup and settling for second at the Copa America last month, Argentine soccer fans were ready to rejoice."

"Argentina won its first Olympic gold medal in soccer Saturday, beating Paraguay 1-0 on Carlos Tevez's eighth goal of the tournament.
Despite the loss, Paraguay captured its first medal in any sport. Italy won the bronze Friday, beating Iraq 1-0.
The victory gave Argentina its third Olympic soccer medal. It finished second to Nigeria in 1996 and to Uruguay in 1928.
In a game the Argentines controlled from the beginning, Mauro Rosales helped set up the winning goal in the 18th minute with a cross from the right side. Tevez ran between Paraguay defenders Julio Manzur and Carlos Gamarra and shot the ball into the net from about 20 feet out.
The Paraguayan defenders had trouble with Tevez for most of the game, and Gamarra and Manzur were given yellow cards for hauling him down after he scored."

"The Iraqi men's soccer team fell just short of earning a medal at the Athens Olympics when they lost 1-0 to Italy on Friday at Kaftanzoglio Stadium.
Iraq, a surprise to even make it out of the first round, was looking for just its second medal ever at the Olympic Games. Abdul Wahid Aziz won a bronze medal in weightlifting during the 1960 Games. But Alberto Gilardino's goal in the first half for Italy was too much for the underdog Iraqis.
A medal looked like a possibility for Iraq after it won its first two matches of the competition to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. They then edged out Australia to move even closer to glory. Two straight losses -- to Paraguay and now Italy -- ended the run for a medal, but, still, the accomplishment of advancing this far in the competition was a victory for the war-ravaged country."

When soccer's Fab Five and the rest of the U.S. women's Olympic team heard all the cheers Thursday night at Karaiskaki Stadium and felt the love of a raucous crowd, it was as if the attention floored them. " The U.S. women's soccer team was 45 minutes away from winning back the Olympic gold medal Thursday, taking a 1-0 halftime lead over Brazil on a goal by Lindsay Tarpley in the 39th minute. The goal could be controversial, however, as replays showed that Brandi Chastain's hand may have touched the ball moments before she passed to Tarpley for the goal.

"The Fab Five and the rest of the U.S. women's soccer team want to ride their emotions to the gold medal, rather than have those emotions get in the way.
It's a difficult balance to strike: The young players wants to send Mia Hamm & Co. out as winners, but many similarly inspired teams have fallen short because they were simply trying too hard.
"I don't want them to feel that I'm putting pressure on them to have to do it for me, or for us," Hamm said. "Let's do it for each other."
The long goodbye ends for the Fab Five on Thursday when the United States plays Brazil for the Olympic title. Iraq has overcome unprecedented problems to get within one game of the gold-medal match. It has to beat another outsider, Paraguay, to reach the final and doesn't care who it meets when it gets there.

"At the end of a workout under a searing sun at an old Greek stadium, captain Julie Foudy gathered the U.S. women's soccer team in a midfield huddle.
"Let's get this party started!'' Foudy bellowed in a singsong voice.
The party that is the 2004 Olympic Games is indeed about to begin, with soccer kick-starting the festivities two days ahead of everything else.
The United States opens against Greece on Wednesday on the island of Crete, one of eight games two days before the opening ceremony for a sport that has to start early to squeeze everything in.
"We've been ready for a month,'' goalkeeper Briana Scurry said. "We're very excited to see what we've got.''
Most everyone knows what the United States has - a deep, talented team determined to reclaim its supremacy after disappointing finishes at the 2000 Olympics and the 2003 World Cup.
Greece, however, is another matter. The soccer-mad country that so euphorically celebrated its surprising men's European Championship title last month barely recognizes the women's game."

"THE gold diggers from Africa will be hoping to complete a hat-trick at the Athens Olympic Games soccer tournament starting today.
Nigeria won the 1996 Atlanta Games with a thrilling 3-2 win over Argentina in the final and Cameroon triumphed on penalties against Spain in the 2000 Sydney final despite conceding a first-minute goal.
A shock-riddled qualifying competition for Greece saw Cameroon and Nigeria eliminated and of the four Sydney challengers, only Morocco survived as South Africa flopped.
Morocco will be joined in the Athens Games by 1992 bronze medallists Ghana, Tunisia and debutants Mali.
Mali drew Greece, Mexico and South Korea in Group A; Ghana face Italy, Japan and Paraguay in Group B; Tunisia tackle Argentina, Australia and Serbia and Montenegro in Group C; and Morocco meet Costa Rica, Iraq and Portugal in Group D.
Group winners and runners-up qualify for the quarter-finals and Mali and Morocco appear to have the easier tasks while Tunisia confront star-studded Argentina and Ghana confront European Under-21 champions Italy. "

"It sounds like the ideal combination when soccer and the Olympics meet.
But it doesn't work that way, at least in the men's competition. Soccer can't grab the spotlight away from athletics, swimming and gymnastics, which tend to dominate the games.
The Olympic performances of athletes such as Jesse Owens, Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis and Olga Korbut are etched in the minds of sports fans.
But how many recall Nwankwo Kanu's match-winning goals that earned Nigeria a historic gold medal at Atlanta in 1996?
The lanky star, who played a minor role in Arsenal's Premier League title triumph last season, scored a last minute equalizer after Nigeria had hit back from 3-1 down to Brazil and then hit the extra time winner to put his team in the final.
The Nigerians twice trailed Argentina in the final but captured the title with a winner in the final minute to become the first African team to win a gold medal.
It was a thrilling finale to a storybook triumph by the Nigerians. But it is buried low in the list of all-time Olympic performances.
"It was the greatest moment of my career," said Kanu, who also played for Ajax Amsterdam and Inter Milan.
"Not many of the stars I play against can say that they have won an Olympic gold medal."
The rules of the competition make sure of that."

"The Fab Five of U.S. women's soccer are back for one last hurrah and a chance to make amends for failures of the last few years. And, just as importantly, they're back among friends.
Lilly, Chastain, Fawcett, Mia Hamm and Julie Foudy have been the team's nucleus since the late 1980s. They have celebrated at each other's weddings and grieved at parents' funerals. And they have become perhaps the most storied team in women's sports history.
Now in their early to mid-30s, they have come together again to try to capture the gold medal they couldn't win at the 2000 Sydney Games (silver) and the 2003 World Cup (bronze). And they have gathered to share yet another chapter in what they say will be a lifelong partnership.
"I love soccer and I love this team," Foudy said Thursday after a two-hour practice outside Athens. "But I think the reason we've all been around so long is because of the people we're doing it with.""

"Nobody going to the Athens Olympics has a sad story quite like Walter Herrmann's.
It's a horror story -- all of it true -- filled with death, grieving, resiliency and more death.
Not many people outside of Argentina and Spain have heard of Walter Herrmann, a 25-year-old, 6-foot-9 reserve forward for the South American country. He's one of only two changes to the team that won the silver medal at the 2002 World Basketball Championships -- in large part because of his ability to overcome tragedy.
On a sunny afternoon in July 2003, Herrmann lost the three most important women in his life: his fiancee, his mother and his younger sister. Exactly one year later, on a day Herrmann played one of his greatest games, his father died."

The Americans made the most of their many chances Sunday against a porous Chinese side as they went out 3-1 winners in front of 15,093 at Rentschler Field — a day before they head to Greece in hopes of regaining gold-medal status.

O'Reilly had a pair of scoring chances after entering yesterday's 3-1 win over China at Rentschler Field here.
The game was the national team's final tuneup before the 10-team tournament at the Athens Summer Olympics. Rain gave way to a humid, 80-degree day yesterday, similar to the conditions the team will face in Greece, where the host country will their first oppoent, on August 11."

"New Everton signing Tim Cahill said the English Premier League club has supported his call-up to play football for Australia in the Athens Olympics next month.
Cahill said Everton's blessing was a major factor in convincing him to sign a four-year contract last week in a move from English Championship club Millwall.
The 24-year-old midfielder, who gained his first international cap in March, will play for Australia in Friday's Olympic warm-up match against South Korea .
"There was never a shadow of doubt (of playing in Greece)," Cahill said in a teleconference from England on Thursday.

New Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho wants Tiago in London not Athens this Summer.

"Whether Argentina finally wins Olympic gold in Athens will depend on how it rebounds from a Copa America it failed to win only on the scoreboard.
Coach Marcelo Bielsa took a risk in bringing 13 of his Olympic squad to Peru to finally end an 11-year drought without a major title. He started eight of them in the final and despite dominating play, they couldn't disarm Brazil's individual brilliance and conceded tying goals at the end of both halves, eventually losing a penalty shootout 4-2.
In the aftermath, Argentina's players regarded themselves as unlucky, and appeared far from devastated, which puts them in the right frame of mind for Athens, where Brazil will be absent. But the Copa campaign raised a question mark over how much gas Argentina has left in the tank as it moves from Peru's cool to Athens' heat with only a two-week break."

Portugal's Olympic squad, which also includes Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo and Fulham's Luis Boa Morte, are scheduled to meet up on August 1, before flying to Greece a week later.
The English-based players could miss two weeks of the Premiership season if Portugal manage to reach the Olympic soccer final on Aug 28.

After Greece's win in the European Football Championships one would expect that Soccer will be rather popular across the nation. This is true but it seems that it's only men's soccer that has been a passion for Greek football enthusiasts. This could be about to change with the introduction of the first Greek women's football team which has been announced in the lead up to the Athens Olympics.
'"It is a good opportunity. If we are good surely things will be different. Soccer will be professional and sponsors will get involved," said 21-year-old Angeliki Lagoumtzi, a defender on the team from the northern town of Kavala.
Getting the women's team together was not easy, even if Greece got in as host country allowing its female squad to take part in the Aug. 13-29 games without qualifying.
There is not much of an amateur league and Greek officials had to scour the country and among Greek diaspora communities for talent.
They eventually signed up 13 women from Greece and another nine of Greek descent from the United States.'

None of the top four men's teams from 2000, including gold medalist Cameroon and the fourth-place U.S. team, qualified. Four-time world under-20 champion Argentina is left as the favorite in the 16-team field, although the Olympic tournament is tough to gauge because rules restrict teams to players under 23, with three exemptions. 2003 World Cup winner Germany and the United States are favorites in women's event; defending champion Norway failed to qualify. Women's tournament consists of 10 teams split unevenly into three groups. Greece, as the host nation, earned an automatic bid to both fields.
