Tackled marathoner gets hero's welcome at home

"Vanderlei de Lima, the bronze medalist in the Olympic marathon who was tackled by a spectator while leading the race, returned home to a hero's welcome, saying he was just thrilled to earn a medal.

Flying back from Athens, Greece, de Lima was greeted at Sao Paulo's international airport Wednesday by fans shouting, "It's gold! It's gold!"

Brazilians were outraged when an Irish spectator, wearing a kilt, knee-socks and a beret, grabbed de Lima and pushed him into the crowd with three miles to go in Sunday's race.

De Lima got back into the race, but was soon passed by Italy's Stefano Baldini and American Meb Keflezighi, the eventual gold and silver medalists. The Brazilian Olympic Committee has requested that de Lima be declared co-winner."

" The U.S. women's soccer team was 45 minutes away from winning back the Olympic gold medal Thursday, taking a 1-0 halftime lead over Brazil on a goal by Lindsay Tarpley in the 39th minute. The goal could be controversial, however, as replays showed that Brandi Chastain's hand may have touched the ball moments before she passed to Tarpley for the goal.

U.S. captain Julie Foudy started the game despite spraining her right ankle in a quarterfinal victory over Germany on Monday."

Volleyball: U.S. Beats Brazil

"The United States men's volleyball team, already guaranteed a spot in the Olympic quarterfinals, posted a convincing four-set victory over previously undefeated Brazil on Monday night.

The Americans carried a 2-2 record into play, good enough to assure them every tiebreaker advantage and a berth in the quarterfinals. They opened up a two- sets-to-none lead over Brazil (4-1) on the way to a 25-22, 25-23, 18-25, 25-22 victory.

"We were really focused today. We all played very well," said USA captain Lloy Ball. "Brazil played really embarrassing. I hope they lose the rest of their matches. Greece will do great. All teams are quite equal."

Reid Priddy and Brook Billings shared team honors with 10 points apiece."

Daiane dos Santos - Brazil's Hope for Gold

Gymnast Daiane dos Santos is fast becoming a national hero in Brazil. She is one of the few chances that the country has at a Gold medal at the Athens Olympics.

'The diminutive, 21-year-old dos Santos emerged as a sports superstar here in August 2003. That was when she won the top floor exercise prize at the World Gymnastics Championship in Anaheim, California, and became South America's first -- and so far only _ world champion gymnast.

She won that gold medal with a series of electrifying leaps, body twists and flips, which the International Gymnastics Federation nicknamed the "Dos Santos" in her honor.' Read More at Gymnast is one of Brazil's few shots at gold
