Birds Egg stadium already losing its shine

Only six months has passed since the Beijing Olympics and the Birds Nest stadium which hosted the spectacular opening and closing ceremonies is already beginning to lose its shine. The paint is peeling and stains have appeared on its famous lattice design. Accelerating the deterioration of the iconic National Stadium is the absence of a permanent tenant. [...]

Paralympics gets under away

The opening ceremony for the Paralympics was held last night in Beijing. The ceremony was spectacular but perhaps not on the scale of the ceremony for the Beijing Olympics. The ticket scammers who defrauded people by selling non-existent tickets through the internet are getting ready for the Vancouver and London Olympics. “I was shocked by the brilliance and hard work of the thieves fleecing the Olympic family — and they are setting up to do the same thing in Vancouver in 2010 and London in [...]

Beijing’s answer to pollution - cloud seeding

Beijing did a lot to improve the air quality leading up to the Beijing Olympics, with mixed results. The days before the opening ceremony were pretty bad, but a burst of rain cleared the air and pollution became less of a talking point. Almost straight after the closing ceremony the hazy skies returned. A [...]

Beijing recorded 6.52 million visitors for the 2008 Olympics, with 382,000 of those coming from overseas. The Xinhua news agency reported that tourist spots in the city reported total revenues of 162 million yuan (US$23 million), according to [...]

Booing fans shut down Olympic horizontal bar final - Judging Controversy Continues

"Booing spectators halted the Olympic horizontal bar final for nearly 10 minutes here, expressing their frustration at what turned into the latest of several Games gymnastics judging controversies.

In a surreal scene unlike anything gymnastics veterans had ever encountered, jeers and whistles of disgust cascaded upon judges after 2000 Olympic bar champion Alexei Nemov of Russia got a 9.725, putting him third after three men.

As Olympic all-around champion Paul Hamm waited to follow, boos continued. Officials pleaded for silence with no avail and finally judges Teh Kin Kin of Malaysia and Chris Grabowecky of Canada changed scores so Nemov had a 9.762.

Nemov was still last. The crowd was still upset. The noise continued.

The Russian rose to quiet the crowd with little effect. Only when American Hamm approached the bar and began did the roar dwindle to a murmur. When Hamm received a 9.812 to grab the lead, the boos returned.

"I was trying to block it out and get into a zone," Hamm said. "It shows our sport is a subjective sport. People are going to have different opinions."

More jeers followed when Italy's Igor Cassina was given the same score but ranked ahead of Hamm on tie-breakers. Cassina won with Hamm second. Nemov finished fifth."

If you want an Olympics medal, change your name to Paul Hamm

Posted by: IwanttobePaul at August 24, 2004 01:46 PM

You don't need to be Paul Hamm to win a medal. You are already, clearly, a first class idiot who knows nothing about the history of gymnastics, it's rules and judging system, or even proper English.

Posted by: Youarealreadyanidiot at August 24, 2004 03:16 PM

"it's rules and judging system, or even proper English"

Uh, right. Whatever you say.

Posted by: pch at August 24, 2004 04:47 PM

Alexei Nemov impressed the entire stadium, where people representing all nations showed their disgust with the judges. The judges are scewed by biases, politics and surely by favortism. What happend is a damn shame. For those viewing from home (USA), we believe he was robbed of a medal.
Someone should fix this....

Posted by: Alicia Ramirez at August 24, 2004 04:54 PM

Simon says "Give Alexei Nemov 9.725."
okay
Siman says "Up Alexei Nemov's score to a 9.762"
okay
"Now give Alexei Nemov a medal"

no, no, no I didn't say Siman says.

The question is "Who the fuck is Simon?"

Posted by: Nilsson at August 24, 2004 05:00 PM

Well, The good news is that P..olish Ham m will never see (I hope) another medal in his life. Being an A..Hole actually qualifies him for a medal.(this one) As for the guy in here who knows so mutch about gymnastics, ..... if you looking for idiots, why not just look in the mirror?

Posted by: daniel rosetti at August 24, 2004 08:02 PM

First the all-around fiasco. Now what happened at the horizontal bar.

There´s no more doubt about it. It was fixed.

And Hamm´s attitude about the mess only makes you wonder if he was into it as well, not just the big honchos above him.

Nemov showed true class and grace through it all. He is a champion. I do think he should have gotten the gold. Cassina should have gotten the silver, and then... well, I'm honestly not sure. I do think Nemov and the Russian gymnastic committee should challenge his score. I think that gymnastics judging needs to be looked at again. And I think the garbage that there should be no ties should be thrown out-- because as has been said many times, this sport is subjective. When we're talking thousandths of a point, how truly better is one person than another?

I do not think Hamm is to blame for what's going on here-- I feel sorry for the guy. He was in a lousy situation that night having to wait as the judges (who, not Hamm, mucked things up for Nemov... both in their initial and revised score). I do think Hamm was overscored for his performance. Even the American broadcasters commented that they didn't know what the heck the judges were doing-- both on the high bar AND parallel bar performances -- with the scoring.

I feel sorry for Hamm because he's getting so much negativity over this. He did make an amazing comeback during the all around-- yet folks demonize him because of what the judges marked him (and because he was an American... I do think that has as much, if not more, to play in this than anything).

"He looked dazed when he saw his score of 9.137, which dropped him 12th place."

Can anyone who knows anything about gymnastics scoring tell me the following. (I may be a gymnastics idiot but I still know how to add and subtract, so if you guys can help me plug in the numbers then maybe I'll get a clearer picture. thanks):
1)Was Paul Hamm's starting value for the event where he fell a 9.9?
2)What is the maximium loss for stepping out of the line, and falling down; then what is the discrepancy between what the judges deducted for stepping out of the line and falling down versus his score (I'm trying to discern after subtracting appropriate amount from his fall, did the judges also take enough points off for other erros, or were the assuming that other parts of his routine were close to flawlessly executed?
3)Somebody told me that in any olympic event prior to this one, any player who fell down out of the line in a similar manner Hamm did never got above a 8.7. Is that true? If it is how did the judges score Paul Hamm's horrendous event?
4)Also somebody was telling me that since a judge had to hold Paul up (otherwise, who knows where he could have ended up), Paul should actually have been disqualified? Is there any validity in that?

5)Why was Hamm's score higher than Alexi's last night? What made it harder and better?
6) Why was that guy who went last night (Cassina?)and did some crazy jumping jacks in the high bar routine get the same score as Hamm to the hundreds of thousanths of a pt (both received i think 9.812)
7) Is Khorkina another victim to biased judgin. Or did Patterson really win her all around medal?
8) why do Patterson and Hamm both have just a distasteful, classeless, stuck-up attitude. Patterson responded to Khokina's angry comments with "I don't care. I thinks she's just a sore loser." Hamm, well you guys all know by now what he's been saying. I am an American, but I am figuring out, you know, there are some very good reasons why every other nation hates americans. I even hate some americans' brazen behavior, many displayed at this olympics.

Hi,
to all those people who were wondering who simon is, it's actually I.

Yeehaw, meself the honorable George W. And the Simone who judges the ladies events is my manfriend Chingy Cheney.

I've been watching the gymnastic circus with increasing disbelief and cynicism... if you just watched the programs that the athletes performed, the Americans were clearly outclassed on several levels. Yet we keep walking away with medals! I mean, the Russian and Ukranian women do routines with actual grace and flair, instead of going from trick to trick with a few cheerleader moves thrown in (like SOME Americans I could name), and the judges consistently tilt the scoreboard in our favor. And Paul Hamm's routines, when he wasn't blatantly screwing up, definitely didn't have the same complexity and clean lines of some of his competition. Nemov was robbed, and Cassina only grudgingly rewarded (yeah, he took a step... and Hammy hopped sideways). They need to throw out ALL of the gymnastic judges, and bring in some people with actual standards. Maybe they should watch the diving judges at work to see how it SHOULD be done!

RUSSIANS - THE STRONGEST! ALEXEI - STILL THE BEST!!! MEDALS' OWNERS - STUPID CLOWNS.

Posted by: Andrei at August 26, 2004 11:33 AM

You guys think its the althletes fault. All they did was partitipate. Hamm and Patterson are great althletes and they deserved it. They worked hard. Now tell me if you grew up as gymnist and knew all the rules to judging. it's not favoritism cause then the U.S wouldn't have won. Remember we are clearly hated around the world. DONT TAKE IT OUT ON THE ATLETES THEY REPRESENT YOUR COUNTRY AND TRY THEIR BEST. what shame, we might as well not have a US team if fans like you don't root for them.

"it's rules and judging system, or even proper English"

If you're going to insult someone's literacy, I'd advise checking that your own is up to par first. "It's" is an abbreviation of "it is", you were looking for the possessive "its".

i think that ALEXEI Nemov Performed his BEST thats why he deserved the GOLD Medal in the bar...
To Paul Hamm...tsk..tsk

Yes, Nemov was great (though I thought the Italian was slightly better). Regardless, Nemov did deserve a medal, but how is that Paul Hamm's fault? The all around is one story, but on the high bar, was Paul Hamm suppose to say, oh, judges were dumb, here, have my medal? Who ever did that before? A lot of people don't think Tampakos deserved the gold on rings (the Bulgarian's routine was great), so should he hand it over? The Japanese on the parallel bars totally got robbed, but no one gave him a medal. ?!?!
