Birds Egg stadium already losing its shine

Only six months has passed since the Beijing Olympics and the Birds Nest stadium which hosted the spectacular opening and closing ceremonies is already beginning to lose its shine. The paint is peeling and stains have appeared on its famous lattice design. Accelerating the deterioration of the iconic National Stadium is the absence of a permanent tenant. [...]

Paralympics gets under away

The opening ceremony for the Paralympics was held last night in Beijing. The ceremony was spectacular but perhaps not on the scale of the ceremony for the Beijing Olympics. Beijing’s answer to pollution - cloud seeding

Beijing did a lot to improve the air quality leading up to the Beijing Olympics, with mixed results. Beijing recorded 6.52 million visitors for the 2008 Olympics, with 382,000 of those coming from overseas. For the first time at Olympics, men's and women's teams must select three of their six athletes to compete on each event in finals, and all three scores will count, leaving no room for error. In the past, five or six athletes would go and the lowest score would be dropped. U.S. women won gold at world championships last year, and men won silver. Both are expected to be in the medal hunt again. China, Japan, Russia and Romania have strong men's and women's teams. Women's all-around should be the highlight of the individual competitions. Russian Svetlana Khorkina will be one to watch in her final major international competition.

Anyone know how to watch TV coverage of Olympic gymnastics in the US with more coverage of non-US contestants and less of the "personal narrative events?"

How is it that the scoring for men's high-bar maneuvers was changed very close to the event apparently after the teams had reached Athens? This adversely affected performances by some participants who tried to alter their routines to eliminate or replace affected maneuvers. Who changed the rules and why was it done now and not after the games? Are the appropriate appeals being filed?

It's all but tainted gold in the men's overall! And Paul Hamm's tainted gold is ... you guessed it ... TAINTED GLORY!

Don't you just hate it when the American's are all furiously mad when they are cheated of victory and want
injustice rectified right away.

I feel so sorry for the Koreans. They have been cheated of past victories. Not only that, the USA Gymnastics president says it's their fault because they didn't complain on time.

Paul Hamm should give back the gold. I think it really goes to show how Americans are all about themselves. If the situation with the men's individual all-around was reversed with Paul Hamm losing the gold unfairly, I truly believe that the Americans would haev been furious. They would have caught the error in judging before?? Well, just as you say that the judges are human, so are the coaches and participants. I mean, if your going for at a competition for the highest honor in gymnastics, I would expect that the judges are competent enough to have some sort of checks and balance system to stop themselves from making errors that would seem "human". Give it back, I'm an American too. I think Americans would have more pride in Hamm if he would do the honorable thing and hand over the gold. You would be a hero to all athletes out there.
And yes, the Koreans have had this happened to them all the time. Why? Maybe politically they are not as strong as other countries. Just think back to the history of all the games. Games have rules and there should be rules against judges making errors that would cost a small country a gold medal, which they deserve.

I'm a girl from Shanghai,China, and I feel so sorrow when I see our Chinese gymnastic team fell down on their way to the championship. But it's a great pity to see the Russians, especially Svetlana Khorkina and Aleksei Nemov finished their excellent and consummate final performance, the judegments uncredibly gave out a low mark!
Then it was said that when Khorkina accepted the report of the media, she told them that the gold medal had already been controlled and would eventually given by Americans. She also told that she had expected all of those while she entering the competition area without a good mood.As the only one that can be delighted with was that, the audience were fair and had the clear as well as the positive judgement about the matches and the contestents.Their warm support at one side help the Olympics keep its own chanllenging fair.

svetlana's the best gymnast

Posted by: at August 25, 2004 08:25 PM

No. Svetlana's the best ballerina. Patterson's the best gymnast--this time. If Svetlana knew that the results were predetermined, why then did she compete? If you knew, as she claims she did, that the results were predetermined and you had no chance for a gold, would you compete. Absolutely not. The fact is, she is a sore loser. She stated in a documentary piece that she was going to take what belonged to her--the gold. When her routine fell short, she then blames the judges and the Americans. And people say that Americans whine? All of these athletes whine when they are close to reaching the top but not quite there. Look at the excuses being made by the U.S. Men's basketball team--we don't play zone, we don't play together often, our best players are at home, etc. etc. The fact is, whether the game is the same or not, they will not win the gold and will get beat by a better team at this Olympics. You can make a parallel argument about Svetlana. She says, "they just judge on tumbling...where's the judging for grace...blah blah blah." The fact remains, at this event, and for these routines, she lost. Case closed.

Now re: Hamm, yes the judges are human. They made two key mistakes in the judging on Tae Young's parallel routine.

#1. The judges gave his routine a degree of difficulty of 9.9. It should have been 10. The correct thing to do would be to award him an additional 0.1.

#2. In that routine you are allowed three stops, or strength holds. If you go over that amount, it is an automatic 0.2 deduction. Tae-Young clearly had 4 distinct stop holds as the tape shows. The correct thing to do would be to award him with a 0.2 deduction.

Result: A net -0.1 deduction which would eliminate Tae-Young from medaling.

People complain of a U.S. bias. I, however, find it very interesting that within the media, U.S. media included, the second judging error during Tae-Young's routine is receiving almost no press. You are right, there is a bias.

Posted by: at August 26, 2004 03:22 AM

Thank God, I thought no one would ever talk about that. I also find it hilarious that instead people looking at all of the facts, they just assume that the US should automatically fall over dead and give up their gold. The Koreans filed their complaint the day AFTER the event occured when it should have been filed before the next event THAT DAY occured. That is clearly stated, and for some reason the Koreans ignored it. It would be like the coach of an NFL team throwing the red flag the day after the controversial play of the game instead of throwing it in the seconds after the play like he should have.

carly is hot. im her biggest fan:)

Posted by: cj at August 27, 2004 02:14 AM

regardless of when the koreans filed their complaint, the honorable thing to do would be to hand over the gold without all this angry discussion.... i mean, everyone WOULD HAVE been so touched by handing over the gold, and would make america look even more like a country all about fairness... but now, even if Hamm does hand the gold over, it's not going to have the same effect. it's going to be like a cranky baby finally giving up his security blanket. seriously, this is blown way too out of proportion. the olympics is not about fair athletic competition anymore.. all it is is about getting the gold and keeping it no matter what, even if you did fall over and almost knock over the judges...
