The opening ceremony for the Paralympics was held last night in Beijing. The ceremony was spectacular but perhaps not on the scale of the ceremony for the Beijing Olympics. Most of the show was performed by people with disabilities, including Li Yue, who lost her left leg in the Sichuan earthquake and performed [...]

The ticket scammers who defrauded people by selling non-existent tickets through the internet are getting ready for the Vancouver and London Olympics. “I was shocked by the brilliance and hard work of the thieves fleecing the Olympic family — and they are setting up to do the same thing in Vancouver in 2010 and London in [...]

Beijing did a lot to improve the air quality leading up to the Beijing Olympics, with mixed results. The days before the opening ceremony were pretty bad, but a burst of rain cleared the air and pollution became less of a talking point. Almost straight after the closing ceremony the hazy skies returned. A [...]

Beijing recorded 6.52 million visitors for the 2008 Olympics, with 382,000 of those coming from overseas. Authorities long estimated that 500,000 foreigners would visit the city, but tougher visa controls reduced that number. The Xinhua news agency reported that tourist spots in the city reported total revenues of 162 million yuan (US$23 million), according to [...]

To the athletes tonight: You were true role models. You have shown us the unifying power of sport. The Olympic spirit lives in the warm embrace of competitive rivals from nations in conflict. Keep that spirit alive when you return home. These were truly exceptional Games! (Source: Dr Jacques Rogge, Chairman of the International Olympic [...]

The fireworks are still going on over Beijing tonight as the Olympics comes to a close. The closing ceremony wasn’t as long as the first one and not as spectacular, but still very well done. We had a short section to mark the handover of the Olympics from Beijing to London. London’s mayor [...]

The closing ceremony has gotten under away. The introduction was interesting, perhaps people will say it is a little “North Korean’esque”. The athletes are entering the stadium and I can only imagine the thrill it must be to be able to walk into the stadium at the end of the games. [...]

In Athletics there is a total of 46 Gold, Silver and Bronze medals up for grabs - 24 of each in men's competition and 22 in women's competition.
Marion Jones was the darling of the 2000 Olympics after winning five medals. This time around, she qualified only in the long jump at the U.S. trials, where doping stories dominated the headlines. Though the United States has a young team, it will battle Russia in the medal count. Allen Johnson goes for another gold in the 110-meter hurdles but faces tough competition against China's Liu Xiang. Gail Devers made her fifth Olympic team, but is going for her first gold medal in the 100 hurdles. The women's pole vault could provide the best competition, with former world record holder Stacy Dragila going against top Russians Yelena Isinbayeva and Svetlana Feofanova - current record holder and the first woman to vault over 16 feet. Felix Sanchez has not lost in the 400 hurdles in two years, while the latest Ethiopian sensation, Kenenisa Bekele, tries for a double in the 5,000 and 10,000.
Results will be added to this site as they happen - you will find links to each event's results page below as they are added to the site. In the mean time get all the latest Track and Field news in our Athletics News Archives.
Where is any of the info of probobly the only two gold medal hopes for the track at Athens, being Louise Sauvage and Kurt Fearnley. Why is there no info in the wheelchair racing. Yes they are only demo events but they are still gold medals and we have a very good chance at winning both.

I think you are a great swimmer
How embarassing to be and American. Sean Crawford and Justin Gatlin's semifinal 100 race was such poor sportsmanship. Sean, that's probably why you didn't win. It wasn't a joke and you were sitting on the cones before the race even started. You must not have been warmed up. I think you do owe America an apology for your antics.
Posted by: Elease Tiderencel at August 23, 2004 01:34 PMHere's a good news story from Athens that hasn't received much press: Matt Hemingway, the high jump silver medalist. Matt grew up in Colorado, where his mom and dad were serving sacrificially at a small Christian camp in the Rockies (http://www.springcanyon.org/). His father, Tom, left a successful career as an officer in the US Marine Corps to follow God's call to minister. Matt was expected to make the 2000 Olympic Team and compete in Sidney, but didn't qualify at the US Team Trials earlier that summer. The day his Olympic competition would have begun -- 4 years and a day before his silver medal jump -- his dad unexpectedly died at their home of a massive heart attack. Matt was home where he needed to be to help his mom and siblings, when his father was called Home to be with the Son of our Most High God. As one of the oldest high jumpers at the Games, Matt continues to honor Christ in his life, marriage, and with his athletic gifts. Check him out at http://higher2fly.com/

Posted by: libraqueen at August 25, 2004 03:48 PMRepply to Elease Tiderencel,
All three medalist crossed the line within a few hundreds of a second, nobody walked, they all ran very fast. They all did their best for that day, for that moment in time. Not every athete can break a record everytime he/she tries. If you think that winning an olimpic gold is easy then you should start training for 2008.

i missed the all the mens 100m races, and i was just wondering what these 2 American athletes did to disgrace their country?

Posted by: Bernardo at August 30, 2004 03:52 AMI'm Glad it's over. I hope Carly Patterson enjoys her million dollars and getting on the box of wheaties, but I'll tell you, we don't eat them. Maybe something good will come out of all this. We still have Mirror Vision, we still have life, at least is wasnt phony, if they would have saved the second half, it would of been contrived. Maybe were too old for this shit, maybe sports is a good thing in our lives, but not our whole lives. Sydney was magic, and so was Salt Lake, those are are examples, they should have the Olympics every year, the track and field events obviously have a lot to learn. Pebbles Flinstone will always be with you. When I first knew her, I was surprised to see how strongly the force was with her. At Athens I took it upon me to train her as well as at Sydney, apparently I was wrong. There was a little spark in her, she's mostly sad tears now, bitter and angry, at one time she was the best star pilot in the galaxy, and a cunning warrior, and a good friend
Posted by: Pebbles Flinstone at August 31, 2004 06:35 PMi really admire Carly Patterson !~ she is very cool!~ xixi!
