Nokia 6680
The Nokia 6680 is European tri-band and will be available in March for around the 500 mark. There is no word of a release in non European countries as of yet.
infoSync World reviews the Nokia 6680 and writes - 'Whether the Nokia 6680 is an improvement over its predecessor, the 6630, is entirely a matter of preference. For slightly more money, you get dual cameras and an improved standby screen, whereas remaining features are virtually identical. Both are signified by quality hardware and software which together enable a vast array of functionality and blazing data transfer speeds, but business users are still let down by poor synchronization and groupware support. Everyone else, however, will have a blast with the 6680.' - Rating: 91%
Pocket Lint reviews the Nokia 6680 and writes - 'In our tests, call quality was excellent and I certainly seemed to have a much stronger signal in most areas than with the 6630 perhaps the reception has been beefed up to help with the notoriously patchy quality of 3G in certain areas.
Grumbles? Not too many to be honest. The main problems I had with the phone were similar to my 6630s (all of them). These include loss of packet data connections and the subsequent disabling of automatic email retrieval but these are more to do with network integrity. Neither did I have any spontaneous reboots, which seemed to be such a common feature of the earlier model.'
PCMag reviews the Nokia 6680, and writes about the phone's camera: "The 6680 includes two digital imaging cameras - a 1.3 megapixel on the rear of the phone and a standard VGA on the front. The latter is used for video calling and still images, while the rear camera is an imaging camera which can't be used for video calls. The quality of images produced was quite impressive for a camera phone and the photos we uploaded to our PC were for most part bright and clear, although the zoom was fairly meagre. The camera boasts flash, night mode, sequence mode, a self-timer and the ability to adjust settings including brightness, contrast, white balance and colour tone. Photos can be captured in either 1280 x 960 or 640 x 480 resolution and can be stored in either the phone or included MMC card. While it won't replace a stand alone digital camera, overall the camera on the 6680 performs admirably."
CNET Asia reviews the Nokia 6680 and comments on the smartphone's cameras: "Video calling is smooth and although the secondary camera (the one on the front) is only VGA, picture quality is quite good. The 1.3-megapixel back camera features an integrated flash (effective up to 1.5m). Our grievance is that there's only a limited selection of camera functions such as night mode and color tone settings."
Nokia News Release: Nokia boosts growing 3G WCDMA portfolio with new Nokia 6680 megapixel smartphone
Instant communications made easy with always-on e-mail, video sharing, video call and XpressPrint
At the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, Nokia today introduced a new arrival to the 3G arena, the Nokia 6680 imaging smartphone. The new Nokia 6680 imaging smartphone is optimized for visual sharing, boasting two integrated cameras, a flash, and a bright screen of up to 262,144 colors. Designed for ease-of-use, the active slide covering the back camera of the Nokia 6680 provides fast and intuitive camera activation as well as effortless switching between cameras during a video call.
A wide range of smartphone features, including organizer, video streaming and Internet browser, are complemented by 3G-enabled features such as two-way video calls*, video sharing* and always-on e-mail, making the well-designed Nokia 6680 a versatile work tool. Based on the leading smartphone Series 60 Platform, the tri-band phone for GSM 900/1800/1900, EDGE and WCDMA networks offers seamless roaming in over 100 countries around the world. The Nokia 6680 imaging smartphone is expected to be available in March 2005 with an estimated, unsubsidized sales price of approximately 500 euros.
"The Nokia 6680 imaging smartphone is the next step in mobile convergence, offering instant communications in an attractively styled, slim form," said Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Multimedia, Nokia. "The Nokia 6680 conveys a new level of a multimedia device experience: it combines smartness and computer power in a unique way, with a multitude of methods for visual sharing. And to top it all off, the device is incredibly easy, instinctive and logical to use."
In addition to two-way video calling* functionality, which enables remote video conferencing, the Nokia 6680 imaging smartphone also provides for video sharing*, a new multimedia service that allows people to share live camera views or video clips during a normal voice call. By simply opening the camera slide, the show-you-what-I-mean type video can spontaneously be added to a voice call and dropped when no longer needed.
The powerful Nokia 6680 imaging smartphone offers a variety of productivity features. For example, the always-on e-mail supports office document viewers and various types of attachments (JPEG, MP3, PPT, DOC, XLS, PDF). The HTML browser brings web access in a pocketable format, and calendar information, contacts and tasks can be easily synchronized with compatible PCs.
In addition to the integrated VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) at the front of the device, the Nokia 6680 imaging smartphone also incorporates a 1.3 megapixel camera (1280 x 960 pixels) with a slide for camera activation and control. Capturing images is easier than ever with the slide and shoot functionality, where the camera is activated by simply opening the slide. Featuring a large bright active matrix color display with automatic brightness control, the Nokia 6680 imaging phone's smooth 6 x digital zoom, integrated LED-based flash, and high-quality lens provide for capturing sharp images. Furthermore, users can select from various color tones when capturing images, including sepia, negative as well as black and white.
The Nokia XpressPrint printing solution makes producing great prints of images, as well as e-mails and organizer information, easier than ever. With Nokia XpressPrint, users can print directly from the Nokia 6680 imaging smartphone, using a range of compatible home or office printers or photo kiosks found in retail stores. In printing via PictBridge, for example, the handset is connected directly to a compatible printer via a USB cable. The Nokia XpressPrint solution also allows for wireless printing over Bluetooth wireless technology. Furthermore, the MMC card can conveniently be extracted from the side of the phone and inserted into a compatible printer for easy mobile printing.
Weighing 133 grams and measuring 108.4 x 55.2 x 20.5 mm (104 cc), the Nokia 6680 imaging smartphone is based on Symbian OS. In addition to the integrated music player with stereo output, the Nokia 6680 also supports the mobile music solution for operators that Nokia and Loudeye announced earlier today.
