MPs will back down over camera ban in NZ

'Media bosses are confident MPs will back down from their plan to ban independent cameras from Parliament, Commonwealth Press Union (CPU) Media Freedom Committee chairman Tim Pankhurst said today.

The CPU, along with representatives of Television New Zealand and TV Three, unanimously resolved to insist on access for independent news cameras to the House and new rules governing what can be filmed.

Under the proposal, footage from the Parliamentary broadcast is to be made available free to networks but it means TVNZ and TV3 will not be able to have their own cameras there and decide what they want to shoot.

“I think this issue has united the media like none other I can think of,” Mr Pankhurst said

Mr Pankhurst and Commonwealth Press Union secretary Lincoln Gould would meet Speaker Margaret Wilson on Monday to convey the resolution.'
