Camera Phones Trump Digital Cameras among SMS Users

'A ForceNine and SMS.ac survey finds that many SMS users in the U.S. prefer to use a camera phone rather than a digital camera. However, about one third of respondents do not know how to transmit photos. While the study is co-funded by SMS.ac and results are not statistically projectable, ForceNine says the findings do indicate that mobile phone pictures could be an important source of airtime for carriers in the future.

In a recent survey conducted jointly by ForceNine Consulting and SMS.ac, over 35,000 SMS users worldwide responded to a survey concerning their preferences regarding camera phones. Fifty-seven percent of U.S. respondents indicated that they would prefer to take a camera phone than a digital camera on their next vacation. Worldwide, 85 percent preferred a camera phone.

However, the revenue potential for carriers relates to what consumers do with their camera phone pictures. Survey results indicated that only 24 percent of American consumers owning camera phones have sent photographs to another address. An additional 30 percent indicated that they did not know how to transmit photographs.

“This shows huge potential for revenue growth for the carriers”, stated Andrew Roscoe, a partner with ForceNine Consulting. “If more people were confident of how to transmit pictures taken from camera phones, our research indicates a near-term potential for over half of camera phone owners to regularly send pictures. This could represent significant additional demand for capacity as the number of camera phones in service also grows.”' Read more at Camera Phones Trump Digital Cameras among SMS Users
