'Until recently, Mohan Shukla, an officer with the Excise Department, thought the cellphone he bought for his younger daughter Prachi was an extravagance and a ‘‘nuisance’’.

But after the 25-year-old MCom student used the same phone to photograph a scamster who entered their Dombivli home and almost got away with cash and jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh, Shukla has changed his mind.

‘‘Her quick thinking and the photo in her mobile helped the Ram Nagar police trace the thief in three days,’’ said a proud Shukla.'
