World Idol - The Contestants

22 November, 2003 3:00 PM

Update - Congratulations to Kirt Nilson from Norway on winning World Idol.

World Idol was officially announced last week. The competition will be held over the Christmas - New Year holiday period.

Get up to date News from around the world news sources on WI here.

In preparation for the series I thought it might be fun to get to know the contestants a little. Here is a very short bio about each. Feel free to add your thoughts in comments - especially for those from non English speaking backgrounds who I had more trouble finding information for. Also let me know if you know of links to hear or see your favorites perform so we can get more of an idea of what they are like.

Here they are in the order of their current betting odds (favorite to least favorite) at My Betting:

kelly clarkson.jpgKelly Clarkson - USA - current odds 5/2. 21 year old Kelly (pictured left) was the original American Idol. She grew up in Texas. After winning Idol she released a double A side single Before Your Love/A Moment Like This which shot to number one. Since then she's released her debut album Thankful (review) and has been touring extensively world wide promoting her single Miss Independent. She is getting close to releasing her next single Trouble with Love is. Also check out Kelly Clarkson's official Site and a more detailed Biography. get samples of Kelly's music here

will-young.jpgWill Young - UK - current odds 3/1 The original 'Idol' from the UK series Pop Idols, Will Young (pictured right) is a 24 year old originally from Berkshire. Before Idol he studies Politics. His debut album was From Now On which has sold over 850,000 copies. He also holds the record for 2nd highest selling single in the UK for Evergreen / Anything Is Possible.
Will has had a bit longer than other contestants to establish himself as an Idol and is being promoted in the British press as being a hot favorite to take our World Idol. His other singles include Don't Let Me Down, Light My Fire / Ain't No Sunshine / Beyond the Sea and Friday's Child.

Will Young's official site is here and here is a more detailed Bio (and another here). Please let me know of any links to him performing.

guy sebastian.jpgGuy Sebastian - Australia - current odds 6/1 - Guy (pictured left) is the most recent Idol having just won Australian Idol. He's 21 years old and from Adelaide in South Australia. Guy was a music teacher before Idol. He's just released his debut single Guy's Single - Angels Brought Me Here this and his debut album Just as I Am. His trademark is his 'Afro'.

Check out Guy's new official site or the Australian Idol - Guy Page. Here him sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow, What a Wonderful World and When Doves Cry. Get Guy's Single - Angels Brought Me Here

HEINZ WINCKLER .jpgHeinz Winckler - South Africa - current odds 8/1. 25 year old Heinz (pictured right) was a law student before his Idol journey began. After winning Idols he released his debut single, 'Once in a lifetime' and a debut album, 'One Step Closer'.

Heinz's Winckler's official site is here and a more detailed bio is here. Please let me know of any links to him performing.

Alexander Klaws.jpgAlexander Klaws - Germany - current odds 8/1 - Alexander (pictured left) is 20 years old. He has released a number of singles since winning Idol including Take Me Tonight, "Stay With ME" and "Free Like The wind". He's also released an album - "Take Your Chance".

Also check out Alexander Klaws Official Site. Please let me know of any links to him performing.

ryan Malcolm.jpgRyan Malcolm - Canada - current odds 10/1 Ryan is 24 years old and is from Kingston Ontario. Ryan is about to release his debut album Home on 9 December after the success of his single 'Something More'.

Check out Ryan's official site. Ryan has a fair bit of web presence - for example here is an interview with Ryan. Also download three of Ryan's songs here. (thanks Katya for the link).

jamai.jpgJamai Loman - Netherlands - current odds 10/1 - Jamai was only 16 years old when he won pop idol, he's now 17 and very popular in his home country. Since winning Idol his debut single Step Right Up went straight to number one and stayed there for 7 weeks. It was the fastest and biggest selling single since the 70's. His first album is 'Jamai'. (thanks to my new Dutch friends and ZlatkoT for the information!)

Jamai's official site can be found here - follow the 'pics/clips' link to audio and video of Jamai performing. Also listen to his Number 1 song from the finals here and listen to him sing Elton John's Your Song here.

Alicja Janosz.jpgAlicja Janosz - Poland - current odds 14/1 My Polish is non existent so all I can really gather at this point is that Alicja (pictured right) is 18 years of age and born in Pszczynie Poland.

Also check out Alicia's Bio and her official site. (All in Polish) Apparently there are some downloadable snippets of Alicjas songs here and also here.

peter.jpgPeter Evrard - Belgium - current odds 14/1 - Peter (pictured left) is one of the older World Idol competitors at 29 years of age. He's been singing with bands for years including a heavy Metal band Disobedient. His Debut single after idol was 'For You'.

kurt nilson.jpgKurt Nilsen - Norway - current odds 20/1 Kurt (pictured right) is 25 years old. From what I can put together he has two children. Kurt has a band called Fenrik Lane which are very popular in Norway.

I can't find an official site for him but Kurt's Fan Club is site is here. Let me know if you find his official site. Check out some of Kurt Nilson's Mp3's here

Diana Karazon.jpgDiana Karazon - Lebanon - current odds 20/1 - 19 year old Diana (pictured left) won the Arab version of Idol - Superstar earlier in 2003. Diana is from Jordon and since winning Superstar has released a self titled Album.

Check out Diana Karazon's Official site. (its a good one - required Flash) You can listen to some of Diana's songs here.

Who do you think will win World Idol? What more can you add to these bios? Please refrain from personally attacking contestants or one another in comments - personal attacks and flaming will not be tolerated.

UPDATE: Hi all - I'd like to thank you for your contributions to this topic. However having just read through the comments that have been left I have decided to disable the commenting features on this post indefinitely.

My reasons for doing this are these;
1. First and foremost I have been a little disturbed by some (its a minority) of the comments. Despite me asking for things to be kept civil in the comments you leave there have been a number of you who have been abusive in what you have written. The purpose of this article was to highlight the positive things about each of the competitors. Each have made it to the final on their own merits and in my books deserve some respect. This respect has not been shown by a number of comments here. I'm ashamed that it has been largely Australians and Guy supporters who have taken this approach. Can I suggest that you do Australia and Guy himself a disservice by being arrogant and abusive in writing of your support for him.

2. I can not keep up with the large amount of comments that this post is generating. Each comment ends up in my email inbox so that I can moderate it. I am a busy person.

3. The more comments the more my hosting costs. This site is not my job, it cost me more than it makes to keep it running. If someone wants to donate some money to me to cover it I'd be happy to set up a blog/forum specifically for this topic to be discussed. If you feel so moved to donate to help me cover some costs do so at this paypal button

I hope that I do not offend anyone by suspending comments, if you would like to talk to me about this or have any suggestions for information you'd like to see added to this post please feel free to email me. Thanks to those who have been sending me info and links - especially ZlatkoT, keep sending your ideas to me at darren AT livingroom.org.au

I think WILL YOUNG should win World Idol. I think he has a truly remarkable and unique voice and a very charming personality as well.

thanks for being the first comment Jen - thanks for stopping by my site.

Darren Rowse » 22 November, 2003 4:00 PM

If the world is voting, I think Kelly Clarkson will win, simply because there is so much more people in America then the other "Idol" countries. I personally would like Guy Sebastian to win.

Sarah » 22 November, 2003 4:01 PM

Apparently people can't vote for the contestant from their own country - so that should even out the Kelly Clarkson, Will Young avalanche... I think the voting will be Eurovision Song Contest like ie each country will have a phone line for each contestant OTHER than the one from their own Country, the phone votes will be polled from each country and points allocated, ie top voted artist as voted by Australia gets 10 points, next 9.. etc etc.. and so on for each country...The votes will then be tallied and the top scoring Artist Crowned World Idol...

VM » 22 November, 2003 4:09 PM

U cant vote for ya own country though.

GO GUY!

» 22 November, 2003 4:11 PM

That's a good system...

Sarah » 22 November, 2003 4:13 PM

GO GUY!

Sarah » 22 November, 2003 4:14 PM

I think Guy will win. He is really the only World Idol Contestant with a trademark- afro, which I think the world, especially America, will love. Plus he has an amazing voice. Go the fro!

Samantha » 22 November, 2003 4:15 PM

Go to the Australian Idol - Guy Page to hear him sing What A Wonderful World.

Sarah » 22 November, 2003 4:17 PM

It sounds so exciting!!!!
However,I am not able to judge without observing there performance. I hope GUY does a fantastic performance at the competition. Go GUY!!!!!!

Minsook » 22 November, 2003 4:23 PM

I like the look of that Polish girl, Alicja. Looking forward to hearing if she sounds as good as she looks.

As an American I hope Kelly doesn't win it, I'd like to hear someone else on the radio.

Hank » 22 November, 2003 4:51 PM

GO KELLY!!!! GOODLUCK!!

» 22 November, 2003 5:09 PM

After downloading live songs from most of the contestants avaliable online i must say the Australia's Guy Sebastian takes the crown for the best vocal talent.... he blows Kelly outta the water, unfortuantly will young does't really compare to either of them!

KL » 22 November, 2003 5:12 PM

Guy all the way!! his voice is heaven scent and he has all the qualities of becoming a star. A good hearted person as well. Guy deserves to win!!

Sharon » 22 November, 2003 5:12 PM

Download "The Love You Save" when Guy Sebastian sang it on Aussie Idol ... it's so good.

» 22 November, 2003 5:23 PM

I have tickets for the Aussie Idol tour across Australia in Brisbane ... yay, can't wait to see Guy live.

» 22 November, 2003 5:26 PM

Guy is an amazing man!!!!! he has the most sensational voice i have ever heard it is so unique and i love the way that he can turn any song he sings into his own. The 'vocal gymnastics' that are so clear in all his songs left me in awe. I wasn't really a guy fan from seeing australian idol but wow hearing his new song 'angels brought me here' i relise that man truly is amazing and so is his voice,so world idol.....WATCH OUT!!!!
GO THE FRO!!!!

Jess » 22 November, 2003 6:21 PM

People new to Guy Sebastian should also download his live Australian Idol version of Everything I do (a cover of the Bryan Adams song) to see just how good Guy is live... he will be tough competition vocally for the other Idol's!

VM » 22 November, 2003 6:23 PM

GUY SEBASTIAN... the voice of an angel. Visit his newly-constructed website www.guysebastian.com.au and sign up to watch his first music video of "Angels Brought Me Here". Go the Guy with the fro!

» 22 November, 2003 7:36 PM

Guy is gonna kick everyones but!

Jaz » 22 November, 2003 7:41 PM

Ala Janosz from Poland should win. If you're not shure to dis decidion you must hear her new song - "Im still alive". She is only 18 years, but her voise is vonderful!!! Ala won Poland edition 2 years ago. In this time she record CD, and she played a lot of concerts. If you wanna to know something more about Ala write to me an e-mail.

nayah » 22 November, 2003 7:45 PM

GO DA FRO BRO
Guy proved that he is the best unsigned talent (now signed) in Australia. Cant wait to see him up against the rest of the world.

melanie » 22 November, 2003 7:46 PM

I think that Ryan Malcolm from Canada will make it far if not right to the end. Ryan has this coolness about him and has a lot of musical talent. Plus you have to put in his personality and they guy has got it all. I'm sure that all of the Idols will do well but please keep your eyes on Mr.Ryan Malcolm as the whole world gets to know the Canadian Idol.
Peace & good luck to all the Idols :o)

I'm Australian and I'm going to be in Germany at the time so I can vote for Guy! Believe me, this is not biased - he really is the best I have listened to all the others.... well maybe I am a little in favour of my own country but he still is the best vocally. Hopefully he can show off his full range and kick everyone's ass!

ixenite » 22 November, 2003 9:36 PM

GUY....YOU GO BABY.
he has a voice of an angel and that trademark ends his finishing touches. I admire him as a artist and i think he will win world idol and there is no question about it. Guy LOVE YOU.

Guy all the way, can't wait to see you in Brisbane and good luck for World Idol! Go the fro! (i can't believe i just said that)

Sarah » 22 November, 2003 10:11 PM

ok im coming from the british standpoint here and that is if you have only heard the stuff will has realeased but none of his pop idol performnaces you will be pleasently surprised and also kelly clarkson does has an amazing voice.

Secondly i presume they will be having judges on this show and i can pretty much gurantee our british so called mr nasty judge simon cowell will be one of them, seeing as he invented the program and is a judge on the us and uk versions, so i imagine you might see a little bit of bias towards them, which is a shame

ande » 22 November, 2003 10:58 PM

I think Guy will win. He is like the best and is absolutely the bomb. Go GUY and like they say GO WITH THE FRO!!!

Mango » 22 November, 2003 10:59 PM

Whether or not Kelly wins this, I know she's the best of the Idol competitors. She's got a truly spectacular voice, and she's a sweetheart, too.
I'm rooting for Kelly all the way, although I've gotta put some support behind my fellow canuck, Ryan.
I'm confident they'll both make a good impression.

GO GUY!!

I think all the idols sound great and it will be a great way to spend Christmas.

As for who will win, I have no idea. I suppose it will depend on how many people are abroad at the time! Just kidding.

Although I am Canadian and would vote for Ryan Malcolm if I could, I am going to vote for whoever has the best night and seems, overall, to be the most idol-ish, idol-y, whatever.

It's great to think people all over the world will be joined together watching the same show, praying for each other's idol to screw up! Just kidding!

Good luck to all the contestants!

I have just seen Guy's clip for "Angels Brought Me Here" again and have decided that if he doesn't win the world has gone mad.

i fink GUY SEBASTION should win!
1: his a really sweet guy!
2: his musik is totali in tune!
3: GO DA FRO!
4: his voice is actualli worth listenin 2.

GO GUY

Australia loves u!

nil » 23 November, 2003 11:28 AM

Guy Sebastian is the voice of an angel. He has style and his 'fro' can tak him to new heights. However, if we can't vote for our own Aussie Idol, then it has to go to Kelly. Not only she has the looks but the talent she's willing to give.

Shane Taas » 23 November, 2003 11:42 AM

I guess as a Canadian I can't vote for Ryan Malcolm! But when I get a chance, I'll listen to Guy Sebastian's music online (or on the show), and I'll see if all of your comments match up to his talent - although I'm sure they do! This is going to be pretty neat, a worldwide musical competition. I can't wait to hear all the different types of singing from around the world :)

Neely » 23 November, 2003 11:43 AM

I'm sure you'll find our comments do do Guy nearly enough justice. He is the best.

» 23 November, 2003 11:45 AM

sorry, that was meant to be do not, not do do :) oops

» 23 November, 2003 11:46 AM

im american.. but i want RYAN MALCOLM to win. hes totaly awesome.. and since CLAY AIKEN isnt there.. (the total best) the next best should win.. and RYAN happens to be that..

elmo » 23 November, 2003 11:50 AM

I have heard Kelly Clarkson, Will Young and Guy Sebastian and so far, Guy is my favourite ... can someone please tell me some songs of the other Idols that are good?

» 23 November, 2003 1:01 PM

Everyone should hear Guy Sebastian sing Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You. It's soooooooooo good!

Krissy » 23 November, 2003 1:14 PM

I'm looking forward to seeing the Idols from the participating Countries showcased on World Idol. It will be a blast for all of the Idols to meet each other, to perform on the World Stage and for all of us fans to cheer on our Idols. I know I can't wait - good luck to all!

I hope you all enjoy meeting our Canadian Idol RYAN MALCOLM; he is a wonderful singer and performer.

**Have Fun Ryan - Canada Loves You**

Teri (TJ) » 23 November, 2003 1:26 PM

Guy Sebastion is such a sweetie, he has the voice of an angel, Im sure people all over the world will agree with me when Guy wins world idol!!

barb » 23 November, 2003 2:06 PM

I'm a big fan of music from all over the world so I'm really looking forward to seeing all the performers that I've never heard of. This site is great. The links are a big help. Except for the fact that I know I will not be voting for Kelly whom I do not like (and there's enough American domination of the pop music scene as it is, thank you) I'm still undecided.

If Ryan Malcolm can't win this thing then I hope - no I know - he will impress so many people.

Bono: "The world needs more Canada"
I say: "The world needs more Ryan!"

Everyone enjoy the show! Best of luck to all the competitors

Linda » 23 November, 2003 2:06 PM

I agree, America dominates the entertainment business, it would be great to see someone from another country win ... e.g. Australia (he he) Go Guy!

Sarah » 23 November, 2003 2:11 PM

I'm looking forward to hearing Alexander Klaws from Germany

» 23 November, 2003 2:14 PM

Apparantly, Guy isn't the only one with a trademark. Canadian Idol has a trademark with the shirts he wears. However, Guy wore some pretty crazy things ... like when he sang Crazy In Love by Beyonce and I think his afro with catch the whole worlds attention.

anon » 23 November, 2003 3:41 PM

I'm REALLY excited for World Idol....but honestly, this is not a competition because everyone has already gone through hell to win their respective idol competitions, this is more of a showcase of talent...no matter who wins, everyone benefits because THE WORLD will get to hear each person! And hey, they're all rich right now so they don't need to win anything monetary =)

But even though I'm fom Canada, I'm definitely voting for Kelly! Not only is she so friggin nice, she is considered to be one of the best female singers in the industry, along with Christina, Celine, Aretha, Mariah, Whitney...

If you haven't done so, watch her performances on American Idol, she'll blow you away =)

Sneakerpimp » 23 November, 2003 3:57 PM

I have been very interested in World Idol since I heard about it and can't wait to actually see the performances.

Since you can't vote for your own idol I'll be voting for Kelly who has the most beautiful voice. I'm also betting that she'll win the show because of talent, experience and because she is known around the world while some of the idols aren't known outside of their own country.

Will Young will probably also do well because of experience and knowledge of him.

I really hope that Canada's Ryan Malcolm does well though since he seems like a genuinely nice guy and has a great voice and better stage prescence. I've supported him through the whole competition and hope he does well on a global stage.

Thanks very much for the info on all the competitors! Of the five I've heard most are pretty good and choosing the winner and who I'll vote for will be difficult. At the moment I'm saying Kelly, Ryan and Will but I'm reserving final judgement until I've seen everyone.

Chelsea from Canada

Chelsea » 23 November, 2003 4:09 PM

Ryan's da man!

Sunni » 23 November, 2003 4:33 PM

I WISH I was American only so I could vote for the best...Canadas RYAN MALCOM....Ryan is the sweetest guy alive and has SO much talent....and as elmo said...If Clay cant be there might as well let the other best singer win!! I cant wait to see how amazing Ry does!! GO RYAN!!! CANADA LOVES U!

Chels

Chelsea M » 23 November, 2003 4:42 PM

I can't wait for World Idol! I've heard Kelly Clarkson, Will Young and Guy Sebastian sing, everyone seems to like Ryan Malcolm though, I hope he is as good as everyone says ... well, we'll see. Watch out for Australian Guy Sebastian.

anon » 23 November, 2003 5:48 PM

I think more people should listen to Ryan Malcom's hit single "Somthing More" or download his version of "He ain't heavy he's my brother", He also has released a new single " the star of all the planets, which is also fantastic, the more you listen to this amazingly talented young man, the more you will know who to vote for....

sheena » 23 November, 2003 8:12 PM

I must say that after i downloaded Ryan Malcom's 'something more' he has a certain something about his voice, though not oustanding theres something compelling about it.

Kelly Clarkson is gr8 recorded but live she can tend to go off key.

Guy Sebastian is the key to World Idol his voice is something out of this world... I hope he gets an American release, i feel he'll do really well even if he doesn't take out the competition. He has the international star quality we're seeing in Kelly Clarkson at the moment... he has all that and more. Watch out Kelly (though i love ya darl) Guys your biggest competition!

As Guy is only new i think this competition will boost his international support! Go GUY!

Lake » 23 November, 2003 8:54 PM

Hey!

I think Jamai Loman from the Netherlands should win. He has a great voice and a great performer!!
But I think Kelly has a good chance to win, she also is a great singer!!

Heleen » 23 November, 2003 10:23 PM

GO DA FRO!
40 votes later and what do ya know Guys Australia's first Idol! I cant think of anyone else who deserved it more! His voice, WHOA! trust me it just blows you away..thats what I love about true talented artists and thats exactlly why I love guy soo much!
btw that voting system is just rigged!
And i want to add: Who's not gonna luv Guy?

LOOK OUT DUDES! GUYS COMING! AND OF COURSE HE'S GONNA KICK SOME IDOL AR$E! U JUST HAVE TO LOVE HIS "ANGELS BOUGHT ME HERE"! GO THE FRO!

kimmie » 23 November, 2003 11:15 PM

Jamai was only 16 jears old when he won pop-idol in the Netherlands, now he's 17
His first singel was named Step Right Up a uptemposong. for seven weeks he was the nummer 1 of our top 40( it has nothing to do with a waterscooter)This single is best sold single ever in our country! One his first album "Jamai" there are 2 song he write himself.
He is just a graet artist and we'll hope he give's a great performans bij World Pop Idol.

I hope I didn't make to many mistakes in my English.

Gerdy van den Brink » 24 November, 2003 12:18 AM

Those of you who have been commenting positively about the success of any other idol except for GUY SEBASTIAN have obviously not heard him sing. Do yourself a favour and listen to one of his live songs, this is talent in its purest form as it has no synthetic aid, unlike most idol releases. Guy Sebastian, no need to memorise the name... you'll be hearing a lot of it!

anon » 24 November, 2003 12:21 AM

I think Jamai Loman from The Netherlands should win world idol. He has a great voice and he knows how to amuse the audience with his talents. Jamai's has 2 songs on his album that he wrote himself and they are really impressive.I hope everyone will give Jamai a good chance because he is an amazing guy with a bog heart and a great voice!!

emmeline » 24 November, 2003 12:43 AM

guy is australia's answer to michael jackson before jackson turned into a freakshow, back when jackson had an afro and the biggest album in the world with thriller. guy is the supreme entertainer, every world idol will have a good singing voice, they wouldn't have won if they didn't, but how many of them can write their own music and make beautiful intricate complex stunning arrangements out of ordinary songs?? could kelly, will or ryan sing natkingcole/julie andrews/beyonce and sound good??? not only is guy talented and versatile, he's funky, groovy, kind, funny and he's got god on his side to top it all off. he is the king midas of music cos everything he touches turns to gold!!

carz » 24 November, 2003 1:00 AM

Woah, Guy supporters feel strongly about their singer.

Don't knock the others though until you've heard them. Let's be fair about this -- don't get locked in on any singer until you've actually heard them on WI. Let's all be surprised by them. I hope they all do well and this turns into a REAL competition.

Go Ryan!

SharonApple » 24 November, 2003 1:16 AM

Agreed Sharon let's wait until we get to hear everyone.

Those who have just heard Ryan only know half of what he is capable of. Ryan's other strength is in his amazing stage prescence. He has looked so professional right from the beginning of Canadian Idol and really knows how to perform to an audience. Plus he's a great guy and has one of the most unique voices I have ever heard.

I'm keeping my mind open but I do think that if Ryan does all that he is capable of he'll wow the world.

Good luck Ryan! With no Clay in the competition I'm rooting for you even though my votes must go elsewhere.

Ryan has sung some pretty diverse songs over the competition by the way and he isn't stuck in one genre. I don't really think any of the top idols are, the weekly themes were just so that it was possible to weed out people who can't sing everything. Obviously Clay proved he could and I feel Ryan, Will and Kelly have as well as your Guy.

I think this will be a huge event and that it will be difficult to decide who will be the winner since everyone has great talent.

Chelsea » 24 November, 2003 2:00 AM

I haven't even heard of any of Will Young's songs hehehe
Not familiar with anybody else except the very talented kelly clarkson and our very oz favourite Guy Sebastian.

T » 24 November, 2003 2:47 AM

i just listen to some clips of Guy and even though he has a very distinctive voice, I dont find it as entertaining as some of the others like Kelly, Ryan, and Clay who is my favourite. I tried to access some of the other sites to hear their music but wasn't successful.

WOW! It looks like Guy has an amazing fanbase, and I'll be sure to pay attention to his preformances throughout World Idol.

It is my opinion that Ryan Malcolm will, if not take the World Idol crown, then at least make a few fan sgo, "Wow, that Canadian dude can sing. Prehaps I'll request his song on the radio..."

I don't mean to offend anyone. If another singer (prehaps Will Young or Guy Sebastien?) catches my eye I won't hesitate to pick up the phone and dial the number.

Also: Please E-mail me if your a fan of someone else and you have the time and patience to teach a poor Malcolmaniac about them. I'm very curious, and I don't think just downloading his or her songs off of Kazaa and listening to their singles will work. I'd like a fans perspective. Also contact me your willing to learn about Ryan Malcolm the uberdork. (And he's OUR uberdork, thankyouverymuch.) My MSN adress is CSI_Toni_Trentit@hotmail.com

Katya Carter » 24 November, 2003 4:34 AM

I personally hope that Ryan Malcolm does well! I'd love to vote for him but I'm still learning the other idols and their music styles! I'm not sure who I am voting for yet but I'm sure it won't be Kelly Clarkson, I like her but not quite enough to vote for her!

» 24 November, 2003 5:26 AM

Hey Darren,

It might be helpful to post an audio link beside each contestant so that everyone will have the chance to hear their music and then judge accordingly :) Just a thought since I'd really like to hear Guy Sebastian's music and some other ones. Would that be possible?

Thanks in advance if you can do that!

Neely » 24 November, 2003 5:48 AM

Well I'm not really an expert, of the contestants I have only heard five of them. I must say though that although Guy isn't bad I'm not blown away by him, sorry Guy fans. I do however quite like Heinz as well as the obvious Kelly, Ryan, Will and Clay(even though he isn't participating he is the World Idol in my opinion).

For those of you who want to know anything about Will Young I suggest looking at his official site, it's quite good and has some good clips. I particularly love his new song "Leave Right Now" which you can watch a clip of. There is also a clip of one of his most famous moments when he stood up to Simon Cowell in true gentlemanly fashion. Will is a soul/jazz singer mainly and shines on songs such as "Light my Fire" and "Ain't no Sunshine".

If you want to discuss World Idol, Pop Idol 2 or get more info I'd also suggest trying out these forums: http://www.pop-idol-uk.com/

I second the audio clips idea though, I would love to hear some of the other idols sing!

Heey i read that your looking for a translater for the text about jamai. I'm Dutch and if you want to know something about jamai just ask !

Jamai just turned 17. The thing with the scooter was to do with the runner up of the (Dutch) idols, not with jamai ;)

elly » 24 November, 2003 7:23 AM

I'm sure none of them are actually BAD - I mean come on!: they all won first place in their respective countries. Even the person who comes in last place (which there of course will be), is probably an awesome singer.

With that said, I think I'll be watching the whole show before deciding who I'm gonna root for. Even if there are bad performances, I'm sure it's going to be a very entertaining show!

Aryssa » 24 November, 2003 9:36 AM

Good idea Neely - I'll try to find some links to some of their music - if anyone knows of any please let me know and I'll add them so we can all be more informed about our comments having heard them sing.

Darren Rowse » 24 November, 2003 10:48 AM

Jamai Loman is the best!!It's to bad you don't know him and haven't heard him sing !!!!Only 17 years old and already performing like an artist who has been on stage for many years. He has a great voice and makes you feel good when you look and listen to him!He can bring you into tears one minute and the next your dancing and jumping !!!
An allround artist, even at his age.But the link for his official site is wrong! That must be www.
Jamaimusic.nl I hope you change that bye Tiny

Tiny » 24 November, 2003 12:50 PM

Hey everybody! Just wanted to say watch out for the Canadian Idol Ryan Malcolm! He's incredible! When he lets himself go, and sings He Aint Heavy He's My Brother, its amazing! And he's the sweetest guy ever! He's like the "Canadian Clay". His stage presence is captivating and his voice is so original and unique! So keep your your minds open and give our lil Ry a chance...you will not be disappointed. Ryan IS Something More!
Good luck Ryan! I know you'll do all the Malcolmaniacs, Canadians and the world proud! You always have, and always will! We love you Ry!!!
Tara from Canada!

Tara » 24 November, 2003 1:02 PM

thanks for putting them all together in one place for me.

As a british Pop Idol viewers my backing is for Will to win, and I have the album to prove hes a good artist.

I know everyone will think there Idol is gonna win, but the world the way it is, I fell its gonna be between Kelly & Will, im sure the others a great, and im gonna enjoy a showcase of there talents.

However I do fell Kelly has an unfair advantage, that she has relased singles in the UK, and I presume in other places, which means she will have a loyal fan base not only in amercia but in other places.

Still I guess in someways the same could be said for Will, as he has been outside the UK, however I dont really know what kinda fan base he has aquired.

wamdue » 24 November, 2003 1:06 PM

After listening to Guy Sebastian I will be voting for him. I've heard the other contestants and my next choice would be Kelly, then Will. Guy doesn't need big production backups as he is a real singer...like Clay Aiken is a real singer. I would just as soon there be no voting and it be a show for pure entertainment though.

Sherry » 24 November, 2003 1:07 PM

I love Kelly! Shes so talented with a strong vioce.
Thats All what American Idol is all about, The strong, loud, smooth, and powerful voice. I wish Clay Aiken will be in the competetion. (sigh) Too bad he didnt win 2nd Idol. Oh Well the Worlds going to have to deal with the big smooth velvet teddy bear next year. Ruben Studdard is all about the smooth Luther Vandrose voice. For this year GO KELLY!! I HAVE FAITH IN YOU!!!!

» 24 November, 2003 1:08 PM

Hi I would love to see Will win, but have got a feeling the poster who said that Kelly will win is right the U.S.A is huge how can any one compete. Does any one now where its being held for definate as i have been told about 4 different countrys love Mandy big up for Willxxxxxxxxxx

mandy » 24 November, 2003 1:44 PM

i really think that Ryan Malcolm will go far because he's just that good. If you have not heard him yet, you should! His personality fits right into Idol, and he's going to be great! MALCOLMANIA ALL THE WAY!!! :)

Kristen » 24 November, 2003 1:46 PM

It looks like everyone is using vocal ability alone to judge the idols. What happened to style and 'moves'. Guy seems to have it all. The charisma, moves, voice and personality. Do any of the other idols compare to this? Otherwise, maybe we should have instead voted Paulini for Oz Idol. She has the most amazing voice that can blow Kelly Clarkson away anyday!

GoFro » 24 November, 2003 1:47 PM

i hope ryan wins!... ge definately has some style and moves!... and a "perfect pirouette!"
i have listened to some of the other idols, and i am a huge fan of kurt nilsen's voice.

Mandy, i believe it is being held in London, England

idolqueen » 24 November, 2003 1:56 PM

hmmm nice type i did there, lol... i meant "he", not "ge" incase you didn't catch that ;)
i wish that we were able to view each country's idol season... even if we couldn't understand it lol

idolqueen » 24 November, 2003 1:58 PM

There's a website with Kurt Nilsen MP3's for download:

http://dirtydog.no/mp3/kurtnilsen/

Jamai's cute. . . I love his Everything You Do. Cute stage presence.

SharonApple » 24 November, 2003 1:59 PM

I'm not sure they're going to have as many people voting for this World Idol as they did in the national Idols.

My reasoning:

1. Most (not all) Idol fans watching will be big fans of their own country's idol, as they voted for that Idol to win.

2. Since you can't vote for your own nation's Idol, the best way for you to get your Idol to win is not to vote (unless you are overseas at Xmas).

3. Therefore, the only people voting will be Idol fans who are overseas, or Idol fans who for some reason or other prefer the Idol of another country.

I would be interested to hear why someone would vote for another Idol if they liked their home Idol better.

That said, I still hope Guy wins (my home Australian Idol). I've heard Will while in the UK, and I think there is a reason they released Gareths stuff here instead.
But I think the international votes for Kelly will see her win the day, as well as heaps of north US Americans voting from Canada.

Don » 24 November, 2003 2:01 PM

anyone could beat Kelly Clarkson! no offense to anyone who likes her though. I just don't think she's World Idol material.

Kristen » 24 November, 2003 2:04 PM

is it airing just in the countries that have participating idols?

idolqueen » 24 November, 2003 2:11 PM

i wish clay was competing. oh well, scince i cant vote for Malcom my vote goes to Ms.Kelly Clarckson

hi » 24 November, 2003 2:11 PM

i'm done voting... even if i could vote for ryan, i'd only throw in one vote... my fingers are on vacation until next idol season!

idolqueen » 24 November, 2003 2:15 PM

I have a question....will this Idol competiton be broadcast in English? What about the people from Poland? or the Middle East?

Kristen » 24 November, 2003 2:17 PM

Don, I think you'll find that they do the voting like in Eurovision where the winner isnt the one who gets the highest individual votes but that individual votes are tallied up for each country and then each country votes as a collective for their fav.

ie all Aussies vote and then who ever wins in our country is the one who gets a vote from Australia....

not sure if i explained that well - basically it means that if you vote you do not disadvantage your own countries rep.

Darren Rowse » 24 November, 2003 3:00 PM

not sure if it will be done in English or not - i presume so, perhaps with some translation or subtitles for non english speaking countries. There has been talk about each country supplying a host for their segment of competition.

Darren Rowse » 24 November, 2003 3:02 PM

GUY SEBASTIAN! go the fro! he has the most amazing voice! wow he sang "Climb Every Mountain" with all his heart and it was so inspiring! i know what ur thinking.....Climb every mountain?? julie andrews? sound of music?? believe me, when they announced that he would be singing it on Idol i though.....errrrrr??? BUT i was totally impressed when he finished! go and check it out his performance on http://au.australianidol.yahoo.com/video/finals/60s/ its just so amazing!!

GO GUY!! GOOD LUCK!

murrielle » 24 November, 2003 3:11 PM

Yes Ryan has the moves, the style(his trademark wacky shirts) and the voice. His stage prescence is amazing so I am all for him!

I want to listen to the other idols though so I have to find singles by the others. I only have some of them...

Chelsea » 24 November, 2003 3:39 PM

GO GUY!!!!!!!!
All the way babie
his gonna kick ass.
He should sing either
:Climb every mountain." or "When Doves Cry" or maybe even "Everything I do I do it 4 you" cause his voice sounded AMAZING in that song.
GO GUY!!!!!!

Christina » 24 November, 2003 3:45 PM

I just have to say:
GO GUY!
You really are amazing - congratulations!
Touchdown!

Chantel » 24 November, 2003 4:27 PM

TOUCH DOWN!!!!!!
good call. Honestly i belive the best voice would have to be guy, yes i know there may b some bias because i am an australian but i have been tracking down music from all the idols and vocally guy has the best voice. HOWEVER!!!!!!! first impressions are important and if all my fellow aussie idol fans can think back guy wasnt all that popular at the start of the comp. It took a while for us to open our hearts to him and with world idol only being a short comp i believe he won't win but it will give him world recognition and the chance to shine. I'm not saying anything against other idols but they all are very different and appeal to different tastes so i believe that the winner is irrelevent and we should all be happy for our representitives.
Good luck to guy sabastian and all the other idols who are just as deserving!!!
:)

The finalists made an appearance in Melbourne and i met him..He's got the whole package. The voice, the moves and the personality.. a great guy.Although supposebly we can't vote for our country i will vote for the best performance.

I've heard Alicja Jnosz and she's got a great voice, i'm also polish so my vote might go to her..Go polska!

Dorothy » 24 November, 2003 7:01 PM

guy is the greatest singer...and he is totally rad...a good role model for the future generation...with really huge hair and voice...his trademark isnt really such a big thing...but his voice is real!!!..try dlding his songs..angels brought me here..and listen to him sing his version of somewhere over the rainbow.

I think Jamai is making a good chance to win World Idols.
I hope all the people in the world likes him so much as we do here in Holland.
It's a young boy, but with a great voice, great performance en he can sing ballads and uptempo songs both great.
There's is also already an fanclub for him, in a short time 1000 people joined us and that for a small country like Holland, isn't that saying enough!!
I'm watching Worl Idols and keep my fingers crossed for a good result for the one and only JAMAI!
When you want to know more about his fanclub, look at www.jamai.net, because in a short time you can find his fansite over here!!!

Patricia » 24 November, 2003 9:29 PM

Hi guys, I'm from Australia and not to be biased but everyone should vote for the talent and when you here Guy Sebastian, he clearly is the TALENT! Kelly and other contestants are talented but guy is better! He is more diverse, has an incredible vocal range, humble, he's the whole package. Vote for the talent, GO THE FRO, GO GUY!!!!!!
Congratulations to other contestants on getting this far!

Lisa » 24 November, 2003 10:37 PM

Hi ppl :-) Alicja Janosz is cute, she can really write songs and is very good at performing. She is an amazing artist. Her vocals is the best. There is no way to explain the way i feel when i listen to alicjas songs. I feel free and alive. More links: http://janosz.toplista.pl/

Marita » 24 November, 2003 10:52 PM

I'm from Australia & I will be supporting Alaxander & Jamai throughout the competition, many people who like Guy or Kelly think that they are the boy-band type, when their voices are really versatile & can achieve anything really!

GO ALEXANDER & JAMAI!

U.S.A UR GONNA LUV OUR 'FRO' GUY.....TRUST ME!!!!!!

Mel » 24 November, 2003 11:07 PM

I'm from the USA, Miami, and i am really happy that a guy by the name of Guy Sebastian is going to sing at world idol. My vote goes to Guy and there is a reason for it. Guy can make any song his own and he has great talent to an extent that the other 10 idols don't have. Many people in the U.S will love him and will realise just as i have realised that he is a one of the most talented artist going 'round. No matter what happens after world idol, i'm sure that i will buy his new album and so will many others. Kelly Clarkson has the best chance to win because i understand that she has toured many countries and had a big impact in promoting herself, but, anywayz good Luck to Guy in the future and to the other 10 idols too.

Jermaine » 25 November, 2003 12:28 AM

I think Ryan should win. He may not be vocally prestige, but he has this unmatched pop-rock edge to his voice, plus he performs his songs really well, especially songs with a sustaining note. But I'm going to try and keep an open mind for the competition.

Silas » 25 November, 2003 1:37 AM

Doesn't the amount of exposure that artists, such as Kelly Clarkson, had would mean that would give them an unfair advantage?

Aileen » 25 November, 2003 2:37 AM

Guy fans, It's great that you feel enthusiastic about your singer, but I honestly get turned off by the insults thrown at singers from other lands. Compliment him by all means, just don't go out of your way to insult the others. That sort of behaviour might turn people away from voting for him, no matter how well he does, simply to spite the insulters here.

» 25 November, 2003 3:42 AM

I agree, I think all contestants must be extremely talented to of become the Idol of their countries. To say that certain contestants "suck" is really uncalled for and I'm sure Guy fans (myself included) would not appreciate anyone saying that he sucks. So lets try and talk about the positives of the idols and not resort to finding negatives about them. Anyways best of luck to all the competitors and I hope Guy does Australia proud :)

Lee » 25 November, 2003 3:48 AM

Okay, I'm only a fair person and willing to give anyone a change.
But to be honest... Guy doesn't work for me, as a Prince addict for over 15 years, I really have to say his version of Doves Cry, made me cry...
That is not the way to sing that song. :'(

Guy, and I'll probably am making a lot of enemies right now is more a kind of a R&B singer to me... And his hair... Bad Hairday?
I can't say that that makes him special!
Boyband stuff....
And maybe it has to do with the fact than everyone is so keen on him that the Idols show in Aussie hasn't been over that long.

Kelly however has got a strong voice...
Pure and simple!
Alexander isn't bad either... It's wheter you like him or not.
I like him!
Will Young, is a bit the new George Michael (I'm sorry)
Ryan is NICE!!!

But heads on....... Jamai still rocks me out of my socks!

Hey... If you still need to have things translated let me know I'm good at translating Dutch and German!

Ryan

Daisy » 25 November, 2003 5:51 AM

Yah I agree for the most part although I haven't yet heard Alexander or Jamai.

Ryan is a genuinely nice guy with that special something about him and kelly has the most beautiful voice. Also Will is very unique and I think Heinz has talent too.

Guy didn't really do it for me, I found him(to be quite honest) quite average.

Sorry Guy fans, no offence meant!

I am willing to give anyone a chance though so I can't wait for the show, should be interesting!

Chelsea » 25 November, 2003 5:56 AM

Kelly Clarkson has had too much exposure and i think if she wins World Idol, the americans will have more bragging rights....and ergo, they're egos will inflate more than they have. Personally i'd like Ryan to win, but thats just me being biased *is canadian* i'd really like to hear what the others got! :D

I gotta say ya know, lots of valid points on here. I hope everyone will keep an open mind on this competition and not let the fact that artists like Kelly and many others who have had the time to put out their own CD already have a distinct advantage over the others who have just recently won. I am Canadian but will be in Florida for Christmas visiting relatives so I'm making sure we ALL vote Ryan many many times, I would LOVE to see him take it of course, but since Kelly is the only other one I've heard at all, well I'm really not making that informed of a decision here am I? All I can say though is I hope everyone is given a fair chance, from the first Idol EVER, up to that who only won the competition last week and won't have had much publicity time. GO WORLD IDOL AND GO RYAN MALCOLM!!!!

I really enjoy Kurt's album "I" and Ryan was such fun to watch on CI (and I can't wait for "Home" to finally be released.) I've downloaded a few of Ala Janosz's songs and like them and I'll be cheering for her as well.

Haven't listened to Guy yet, but if sings as well as y'all say he does I'll be happy to pitch some votes his way as well.

Cheers!

Cluppy » 25 November, 2003 3:17 PM

a few comments...the majority of these messages are awesome, and then there are others who bash the other idol WINNERS......if they really suck, then how could they have WON?? Especially the Guy fans...what's up with that?

Do you honestly think he wants you as fans? And to say that Kelly isn't versatile?? Did you NOT watch the first American Idol? A white texan with a booty that can belt out Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, and a song from the 20's to name a few.....yeah, that's not versatile...Simon was wrong...the next time you decide to comment, PLEASE at least listen/watch all of her performances on AI...and I've seen Kelly perform on Australian Idol and she brought the house down! Standing ovation by the audience and the judges....so the next time you want to insult kelly, at least keep it respectful because you are entitled to your opinion, and please listen to her stuff and BACK UP your point...

and one last question....I know that Simon judges on Pop Idol and American Idol...has he ever judged on other Idol shows? And outside of the US, has Simon ever NOT insulted any of the winners?

Oh, and the canadian that's not voting for kelly because she's american...well I'm canadian too and isn't not voting for someone because of their country a little ignorant?? Yes the States will get bragging rights....but *IF* Kelly deserves to win (not that she definitely will), then doesn't she deserve to win? Isn't this show about talent, not nationalism??

Guy should definately win World Idol. Apart from being the guy with the most amazing voice he has to be the sweetest guy in the world. He has such a unique voice and he deserves to win. He could do wonders for the music industry. His voice has to be one of the best in the world and he deserves to win hands down. Thanks Guy for having an enmorous heart and having a voice that could stop all nations. You deserve to win babe and i am sure if you stay positive and keep your head high you can conquer the world adn fly. But for all the other contestants, they probably deserve it just as much so good luck to all of them adn may the best person win.

If you want a pure, gentle kinda guy vote number 1 for guy sebastian. He is great and that hair is a trademark so back off. It's his style and believe me when you hear that amazing voice you will just fall in love like the millions of other people who are voting one for Guy

Hi all - I'd like to thank you for your contributions to this topic. However having just read through the comments that have been left I have decided to disable the commenting features on this post for the next 24 hours - if not indefinitely.

My reasons for doing this are these;

If you want to help with hosting costs donate above.

If the donations are enough I'd be happy to reopen and expand these comments.

I hope that I do not offend anyone doing this, if you would like to talk to me about this or have any suggestions for information you'd like to see added to this post please feel free to email me.
