Blogathon - Entry 36
I've always lived in Melbourne Australia — however I have been fortunate enough to travel overseas on a number of occasions.
When I was 16 I visited Malaysia for two weeks of touring with a big band from my school. We visited KL and Penang. It was great fun — the people were incredibly friendly.
At the age of 19 I went to Thailand for a couple of weeks on a Mission Exposure trip from my church. We visited a variety of missionaries and development projects. It was pretty amazing for me as it was the first time I was really ever exposed to anything other than my middle class upbringing.
At the age of 21 I went back to Thailand to live in a slum in Bangkok. I worked there in an AIDs hospice and drug rehab centre on a voluntary basis. This time changed my life forever in so many ways. It was a time where I discovered gifts, got my life together a bit more and realized I could make some sort of a difference.
In 2001 I visited the Philippines for a couple of weeks — again leading a mission exposure trip visiting church planters and development projects. It was here I met the guys from International Needs (who the money from this blogathon is going towards).
A few months after that trip V and I got married and for our honeymoon we visited Bali for two weeks. It was the first time I'd gone overseas purely for a holiday.
Last year V and I went to Europe and Morocco — again mainly for holiday purposes. Most of my readers will remember my blogging from that time.
I love travel — both here in Australia and Overseas — it is amazing how much one grows and is challenged when they travel, especially when you enter into very different types of cultures and experiences.
Where is your favourite travel destination???

hehe...thanks for that pick up Irene. Yes I think the sleep depravation kicked in as soon as I got out of bed.

Gosh Darren -- you were unfortunate enough to travel overseas on a number of occasions??! Sleep deprivation must be kicking in, *lol*
Have only been to Lake Toba, Indonesia for a family holiday at the end of 1996. Went to South Korea last year for work but didn't see much of the countryside -- woke up at 6:30 every morning and got back to the hotel at midnight every night. Have also been to Singapore twice for work, both one-night trips. I won't count England coz I was born there and came back when I was 4. Can't remember a thing about it! That's the extent of my travels.
I'd love to go to Australia one day -- I have an aunt who emmigrated there... and to go back to the UK and at least see "the land of my birth", y'know?
