Silent Movies

Here's an interesting article which makes the observation that while more people are going to the movies than ever before, they're talking about them less than ever before.

Its an interesting observation - not sure if I agree or not. I've been toying with the idea of starting a 'Movie Club' (similar to a Book Club, which is the latest rage here in Aus) where people come and watch a movie and then have some discussion about it over a meal or coffee. Maybe I need to rethink!

hey im doing that right now! organizing a movie club, i mean. very hard but we've been surviving for over a year now. hard to get regular discussion-goers though. besides, i think, we're the first of our kind here in Manila.

My parents' church does something like that. They rent a movie once a month & all get together to watch it. Then, there is a directed discussion right after. The discussion is setup so that just asking the scripted questions & getting a couple quick replies to each will only take 15 minutes or so. That way, if people really don't want to talk, the discussion doesn't have to be some big deal. But, if people start getting into the discussion, the script is just a starting place.

We've been doing this successfully in the University Chaplaincy here. It isn't a formal club, but "Reel issues" has been meeting about twice a month during term-time here. I think there are two key ingredients
1. Films which do genuinely raise big issues
2. People willing to "go outside the box" of films they'd normally watch
3. Someone willing to launch the discussion

OK, so that's 3! But it is great fun and definitely worth trying.

We've doen this a few times in my group at church - but I wonder if we've simply chosen films that don't raise a single big issue, but ones which raise about 100!

Any suggestions - Cheers, Steve

Quick note to let people know I can't currently post in my main page - working on a solution....many things to post....

We have an evangelistic one here in Kiev in my living room. It's been a great tool to make new contacts because lots of people want to work on their English. So after the movie we have an English-language discussion about the film. I alternate films with deeper content with movies that are just "fun" oriented. It's been very good so far...

Move club...that's cool. I'd love that. When I was in college I wrote four film-based studies for a Christian Education curriculum development class. I love watching and discussing a good movie...
