Sermon on the Mount

3 November, 2003 8:02 AM

This week we're going to start a series on the Sermon on the Mount at Living Room.

I guess the motivation for the series is having seen the movie Bonehoeffer as a group a couple of weeks ago.

We were challenged by his call not just to see this teaching of Jesus as an ideal that cannot actually be lived out because its impossible - but as being an actual way to live.

I've looked at the passage many times before but am excited (and a little scared) about what may come out of our learning over the next few weeks together.

What does the Sermon on the Mt mean to you? What are you drawn to in it? What puzzles you about it? How does it mean to live by it to you? Interested in your thoughts.

What do you think about the view of the sermon on the mount presented by Dallas Willard in the book "The Divine Conspiracy"? I am currently reading this book the second time through. He takes the view that the beatitudes are not just new rules on how we should live, but examples of how the kingdom of God is available to everyone, not just the religious elite. For example, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven" does not mean that we should strive to be spiritually bankrupt, but that God's Kingdom is available even for those who are spiritually weak.

That sounds facinating Darren, Im interested in what ya'll discover. I confess Ive never spent a lot of time in the Gospel's - I have my fav.but I didnt spend a lot of time studying them. However now that I am preaching at church I find that I have missed out on a large chunk of information.
As for the Beatetudes specifically, I recall learning them by rote at primary school, but I also recall being able to relate to some of them, more than other passages in the NT.

I'm listening to a series by Eugene Peterson on Matthew 5 and it's fascinating. I can also recommend Dallas Willard's the Divine Conspiracy. The Beattitudes have a lot of parallels with the ten commandments! Looking forward to see what you guys learn.
