Redecorating the LivingRoom

25 January, 2004 9:39 PM

Welcome to the new look Living Room. You might say we've redecorated the room. Firstly let me say a bit thank you to Rachel the best web designer I know. She's exceptional.

Secondly I'd like your feedback on its design and useability. The brief I gave Rachel was for a warm and inviting look which will make people feel welcome, comfortable and want to pull up a chair, grab a coffee or wine and stay for a while.

What you see is Version 1.0 of the new design, there are a few new things in my mind that will come soon and a few things that we need to tweak — but what do you think so far? What works well, what doesn't? What are your first gut reactions? How do you find navigating around?

I'd love to hear your constructive criticism, thoughts and ideas in comments below. What do you think?

Excellent - I love the light - makes me feel someone is at home and it might be worth knocking on the door for a visit

Which reminds me - I have been visiting for a while, and really appreciate your site

I like the colours and the light too. Contrast is good and my eyes have no problem reading text etc. Perhaps a suggestion? Your banner text could be a bit larger or clearer. "Living Room' is fairly legible to me, but "A Space for Life" is fairly difficult to see, let alone read. I realise Living Room is the main idea, but perhaps the subtext could be clearer too. Well done. Rachel has done her usual great job.

I like the new look. Rachel has done a wonderful job again!

The blogroll pages don't appear to be working in my browser. I also think I would like to have a place to easily look through archives, maybe organized by catagory.

Christopher » 26 January, 2004 1:43 AM

Nice look, Darren. I really like it. Warm, inviting...and hey, no pink!!

Same difficulty with the blogroll as mentioned above. Also, I have to admit I really liked having the blogroll on the front page (even as large as it was). There are a number of blogs I visit only occasionally, not added to my own aggregator or faves. I always used your page to navigate to them.

Great work Rachel! Now if only I would ask her to fix my site :^)

Jimmy » 26 January, 2004 7:20 AM

Like it very much. Cleaner, simpler, better.

Owen » 26 January, 2004 7:35 AM

I like the new look.. but where are the blog tips and little categories?

Jon - Quality Control » 26 January, 2004 7:57 AM

Very nice! I like that SiteMeter is now at the bottom of your page, making it load faster on my browser. And the central register for the Blog Tips has disappeared (as Jon has noticed). Other than that, the new look is fantastic!

Neely » 26 January, 2004 8:30 AM

Fixed up the problems in IE with the blogroll now :)

great job Rachel, love the colours. and it loads faster! btw thanks for linking to me Darren...er...I have been slack in letting you know I've moved....

saint » 26 January, 2004 9:49 AM

wonderful elgant work Rach - you have real talent

phil » 26 January, 2004 11:03 AM

I like the new look. A lot. However, I can't scroll sideways enough to show your links and such on the left side of the screen. They're cut in half on my browser (Netscape, btw). Other than that, Rachel has done an outstanding job as usual!

#Debi » 26 January, 2004 11:18 AM

Just in addition to Debi's comment on her Netscape browser. I use Firebird Mozilla and don't have that problem at all with that .

Jan » 26 January, 2004 11:31 AM

Can you let me know which version of Netscape? Thanks.

Rachel C » 26 January, 2004 12:25 PM

Ooh, this looks nice.
Very cosy.
I feel at home already.

Gerard » 26 January, 2004 1:07 PM

I want to see a one-pixel black border immediately under and flush to the warm and inviting banner. Also I wouldn't mind having the font-size being user manipulatable (as sometimes I'm on screens with hi-res and sometimes on screens with lo-res), which means switching from body {font-size:11px;} to something like body {font-size:80%;} - or even 75% if you likes it small. I wouldn't mind seeing the navigation-bar text slightly smaller too (to my eye, they just take up a little too much room). Of course all these little details are my own personal preferences and peccadillos. Good job on the whole!

Looks great and works well for me under Mac OSX with Safari and Mozilla but has the normal Mac IE problems with the presentation of the content being a little off - for example, the white side bar stops half-way down the Google ad box leaving that hanging out into darkness. But it's still very usable and pleasant to look at.

Stephen » 26 January, 2004 2:04 PM

Very warm and cozy, makes me want my fleece blanket, a good book and hot cocoa. :o)

Heather » 26 January, 2004 2:45 PM

Rachel, I'm using Netscape 7.02 on an Imac, if that helps.

#Debi » 26 January, 2004 3:12 PM

Soooooooooooo cool!! I love it! Rach, you're awesome!!!! ;)

irene » 26 January, 2004 3:59 PM

Although I liked the old look with the traces of your blog's history from blogger to bigger things, this is an excellent transition.
Vey nice. Quick and clean.
And still quite "distinctive" which is good. Congrats

boynton » 26 January, 2004 4:53 PM

tiny thing - on blogroll Read Live Preacher should read Real (sorry couldn't help myself)

saint » 26 January, 2004 8:33 PM

Really looking good! My humble suggestion: I feel the menu font is too big and too wide. Perhaps a similar width to the Google ads would look better?? Look forward to seeing it finished.

Shane Dryden » 26 January, 2004 11:07 PM

I like it, Darren! It looks AWESOME!

Matt » 27 January, 2004 3:58 AM

AWESOME... great design, hat tip to Rachel... I love her designs!

TravisM » 27 January, 2004 4:42 AM

Looking good, Darren

dan » 27 January, 2004 9:52 AM

Nice work peoples!

Luke » 27 January, 2004 11:23 AM

Darren & Racheal-->great work on the site.I honestly felt relaxed going through this.

Dee » 27 January, 2004 11:52 AM

Well done Rach and Darren! As usual it looks great. Darren, Love the new look.

Rachel » 27 January, 2004 11:57 AM

One thing I just noticed. Trackbacks are enabled here, but (even for posts that had trackbacks already) I wasn't able to find the listing of the trackback url (either on the permalink page for a post, or as a link to a trackback popup on that page).

Jenny » 28 January, 2004 12:07 PM

Love the new design, Darren! Personally, I like the banner the way it is.

Have you thought about incorporating the blogroll into this page, maybe via DOM? (Oh, on that topic, you've linked to an individual post for me, not the blog home. And, hey, I'm a Brit!)

Other that that, it looks great! Don't do too much to improve it. :o)
