Mac Bible Software?

10 January, 2004 10:28 PM

The following just arrived via email - do any fellow Mac users have any suggestions for Craig?

Hi Darren,

I recently came across your blog and enjoyed it very much. I believe
you are a fellow mac user and I was wondering if there is a particular
bible application that you use for the mac. In terms of versions I
usually refer to NIV, MSG & NRSV. I have all these for my Clie, but
can't find anything useful for the Mac. Any suggestions.

cheers,
Craig.

Hey, I use a clie, but not a mac. The only thing I can suggest is that your correspondent ask around on http://www.auspug.org or http://www.cliesource.com

Hope that helps!

I used the "OnLine Bible" (http://www.online-bible.com/maconlinebible.html) for a while, but have gone back to real books, paper - that sort of thing.

Just visiting your site for the first time, but here's a URL that might be helpful here:

Mac Bible Software Survey Results

The survey was published in July of 2003, so the recommendations should be fairly up-to-date.

I'm not a Mac user, but I am a satisfied user of the SWORD Project's PC software, and I found the above link on the MacSword news page.

If you're into detail Bible study then "Accordance" seems to be the software of choice. (http://www.oaksoft.com/welcome/newto.htm)

A more basic package that only runs under Classic is the NIV Study Bible packages from Zondervan
(www.zondervan.com/interactive/browse.asp?Catalog=zondervan.com%20Interactive&Category=Macintosh)
I think you can upgrade through Oaksoft to an OSX package of the NIV stuff.

If you have Virtual PC then most PC packages work - also for just accessing the text then Bible Gateway (www.biblegateway.com) and Oremus Bible Browser (www.oremus.org/bible/) on the Net work well.

I asked a friend who is a Mac user and was told he was still looking. I'll send him the URLs mentioned above.

Shalom,

I have been looking for an OSX bible software package for the past year. There are a number of ways to "make it work". And, if I had no ability to carry a paper bible, I could make it work (such as Sword, mentioned above). But there just doesn't seem to be any single, easy install, works-out-of-the-box, great solution for OSX.

Someone please prove me wrong! :)

Mac Bible survey was very interesting. Unfortunately it provided the answer that there are no elegant bible solutions for the Mac OS at the moment. Thanks for the input from those that have responded so far.

Guess its biblegateway.com or studylight.org for the time being until the developers catch up.

I'd recommend Accordance, too. I've been using it for a couple of years in OSX. It takes a little getting used to, but once you have it's an invaluable resource. I'd really recommend giving it a try.

Accordance, or the Zondervan "Complete" Bible are OK Mac programs... Online is decent.... the best option I ever used was using Virtual PC and loading Logos or some other similar PC Bible software. I can't understand how, at the very least SOME of those software developers can't port the systems over to UNIX, then we could at least run it on "X".

I basically use internet-based tools (those mentioned, as well as CrossWalk (http://www.crosswalk.com) and LifeWay (http://www.lifeway.com) has some helpful bible research tools in their portals.

Professional scholars use Accordance. It's the top-of-the-line package, bar none. Extremely in-depth, original language study and research, for "serious" users: (http://www.oaksoft.com/)

There's a new, open source (free) program called MacSword. Excellent program. Great for general use and basic research. Also support multiple languages (including Asian plus many others). Some translations (NIV, NLT) not available due to license restrictions: (http://www.macsword.com/?lang=en)

Ilumina Gold is another excellent program with really cool animations and historical views of Biblical content. Well worth a look: (http://www.iLumina.com/home/default.asp)

For OS 9, Online Bible is an excellent program. Be sure to get the deluxe version. The classic version doesn't include popular translations like NIV, NLT, NKJB, etc: (http://shop-secure.biz/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=OLBM)

Check out Christian Mac User Group. They offer discounts on some Bible software and connections with other Christian Mac users for consultation: (http://www.cmug.org/)
