Its raining Digital Cameras

Its raining Minolta, Pentax, Nikon, Canon and Kodak Digital Cameras!

This is the time of the year where Digital Camera Manufacturers announce all their new models. Next week there is a major convention (PMA) at which they all compete for attention and release new cameras. The lead up to it has been pretty full on with around 20 cameras being released in the last few days.

The reason for writing this is threefold:

1. If you are considering buying a digital camera it is (or is about to be) a very good time to do so if you're wanting to pick up an existing (older) model. There have already been price cuts on some existing models to make room for new ones.

2. If you're wanting the latest technology in your new Digital Camera - Wait! The new cameras that are being announced have significant improvements.

3. I just wanted daily readers to know that I've been a bit side tracked from this blog because I'm adding new models to my Digital Photography blog as they are announced. I havn't forgotten this blog, just working on keeping the other one up to date in this busy period.

I have an HP Photosmart 318 that I picked up at a door-buster sale in November 2002 in preparation for my first-ever foreign mission trip (to Nicaragua, in January 2003). It's been a fine, low-priced machine, and I'm not really in a position to go for one of the big expensive cameras.

Even so, the one thing it lacks is a zoom lens. I'm taking my second mission trip in August -- to Kenya -- and we're going to get a chance to see some wildlife at the end of the trip during our debrief. So I'll probably be looking at buying something this summer, depending how my finances are and how the fund-raising for the trip turns out. I know I won't get the kind of shots I would with an SLR and a zoom lens the size of a scuba tank, but I'm not in a position to do that, and we don't like to pack that heavily for these trips in the first place.

Hi Darren,
I'm checking out digital cameras at the moment, your website has been very handy!
My friend suggested I get the Canon powershot A80, because I like the G5 but think its too big and snazzy for a beginner like me. I like the sounds of the A80 - can you recommend any other cameras?
