Everyday Spirituality Tour

11 May, 2004 1:05 PM

I've been thinking the past few days about everyday faith - especially faith in the places where we work, socialize and live. It seems that everyone I talk to is thinking or working on the same thing, from my Dad, to LivingRoom people to emerging church colleagues.

I think that there is a need for us to put a renewed emphasis upon the workplace, the home and the places that we socialize as being as much legitimate places where we know and experience God as the places that we gather for worship at church.

I just keep coming back to the amount of money and time that we throw at worship services and wonder what would happen if we put as much effort into resourcing followers of Jesus to connect with and respond to God in their every day lives.

I'm thinking of taking LivingRoom on the road over the next few months to actually have us take an Everyday Spirituality Tour of each other's lives. We'll all pile into our cars and visit one person's work place (even if we just sit in the carpark), go to their sporting clubs, to their local pub where they hang out and then visit their home. Along the way we'll hear stories about those places, maybe even meet a few friends and work mates and we'll pray for and commission the person for the places that they go.

Just a thought - will update you as we go.

Sounds really worth while.

I sometimes wonder how much we actually grow in our understanding of God's power by going through the motions of a "pew" driven service. Hymn, prayer, hymn, readings, hymn, communion, words from speaker, hymn, home.

Sounds like you'll be able to really engage in one anothers lives. I'm kinda jealous.

Am finding it hard up here in the Pilbara (NW WA), as ppl my age aren't willing to engage in conversations about their beliefs. They have their 6 figure salaries from the mines they work at, their new boat, new car, new toys and are under the impression that they have it all.

Wish there was something like what you guys were doing up here.

Thinking about the same stuff too. Lots of people talk about a "theology of work" and stuff like that. What I'd like to see and experience is a "spirituality of work" - something that connects with not just thinking about work but also with the experience of God in work (in whatever form of work that is).

I'm there as well. Let's just live our faith. Everywhere, anywhere 24-7, 365.

What a wonderful idea Darren...may the experience be a profoundly fruitful one in so, so many ways.

Okay, why not create a photoblog and have people take digital photos of their everyday lives: the bath, the lawn, the front door, the inside of the car, the coffeehouse, the exit ramp to work, the Taco Bell where I get lunch. I would be willing to do the leg work on this and host it at e-Church??
