Droolings over Apples

25 October, 2003 1:40 PM

I've avoided heading over to Apple since hearing about the release of the new G4 ibook. I had a feeling they'd release one soon and having bought a G3 ibook last year I wish they'd done it sooner. Oh well. It looks like a great little machine and pretty cheap too! Hmmm...I wonder how much I'd get for my G3 as a trade in.

I am also tossing up whether to fork out the money to buy the OS X Panther. Would be interested to hear how others are finding it if they go the upgrade.

do it, do it, do it.

I'm considering selling my 12" powerbook to buy a 14" iBook.

I'll be upgrading to panther as soon as the tech fund has $129 in it, which may be as soon as this afternoon.

I'm considering making the jump to Panther. I'll probably head over to the local computer store later this weekend to research (play with) Panther on their Macs.

I'll let you know if I make the jump.

Yes, the new iBooks are very cool but I'm liking my little 12" PowerBook too much to trade it in so soon.

Here's what one of my friends thinks:

After two days with Panther I have to say that the biggest plus is improved speed on my G3 iBook. Safari's faster, the Mac Mail features are really cool and Expose, while I probably won't use it much, is very cool. I haven't loaded it on my G4 desktop yet but I'm looking forward to some increased stability and speed. To me, Panther is no where near as big a jump as Jaguar was as far as features goes, but I'm looking forward to exploriong more features soon. I probably wouldn't recommend Panther as a necessity for the average user, but if you rely on Safari, Mac Mail and iChat A/V or are looking to pep up a G3 or slower G4, I'd say take the plunge. Finally, it did take more than 90 minutes to install (upgrade) my G3/500 iBook so be prepared. Faster processors won't take as long, but I thought I'd mention it.

Panther is the way to go. BIG difference from Jag. Faster, much faster, cleaner, better features...Expose rocks! As well as iChat A/V and other apps. And if youre a student you can order it through Apple's educational discount store online for only $69USD.

little apple tip however...dont buy the new 15" powerbook...my boss bought one and 2 weeks later found out that ALL of the new 15" powerbooks have a screen problem. appearently the support struts in the top clam shell puts stress on the lcd causing big white spots to appear on the screen in the shape of a baseball diamond....YIKES!!!
