BlogRoll Updates

22 September, 2003 5:06 PM

I just updated my blogroll. I'm a little unsure how to keep it under control. (how do others make their mind up who to link to?) I took a few off that havn't been updating or that have dropped off the blogosphere and added a few new ones too including:

Home South :: Mootblog :: Stinky Convoluted Past (the boys have been updating again...occassionally) :: Le Sabot Post-Moderne (who I've been reading for a while now) :: Ballad of a Thin Man (Tall Skinny Kiwi's new blog).

I realise there are alot more blogs out there that have been kind enough to link to me and whom I reguarly read - however if I included everyone it would be completely out of control - maybe I need to find another way to acknowledge everyone that I read. Has anyone seen a better way to do this?

How about listing those that have donated to you? :)

Since this seems to be a PHP-driven site, why not pull 5-10 random links out of a database once an hour?

That's a hard question.

As a consumer of blogs ( I currently read 38 blogs ), what I appreciate are short blogrolls with links to people close to the blogger. Another set of links to jordoncooper.com and theooze.com is not interesting to me, but a set of links to other places I might not have found on my own, that are related in some way (even if it is only though some strange synaptic connection the brain of the blog author) that is useful.

The problem is, what is unknown varies per person. Real Live Preacher is a must read for me, and most people who are blog-aware read RLP, but people new to the blogoshpere may not have read RLP, and a link might be helpful.

Maybe the best thing to have, like many people do, categories of blogs. There's the "Neighborhood", which are blogs by people "close" to me. Maybe a "Five blogs I read eagerly" list, and then maybe "All Blogs I Read or link to me" list, and then maybe seperate from that the, "Welcome to the Blogoshpere" list.

I've got links to 31 blogs. Most of the blos I link are blogs that link to me...but I don't link to every blog that links to me, because I don't like every blog that links to me.

I just link to blogs that I enjoy reading and read on a very regular basis. I don't feel any obligation to link to a blog...except for my mom's.

I have to say, your blogroll is a little overwhelming. Speaking for myself, I'm not likely to spend much time browsing it. Also, while I'm a very regular reader at JoshClaybourn.com, I never look at his links list...there are just so many it's too overwhelming.

Though I'm not sure how other people view my links list, I've tried to keep it pared down and fairly well-organized.

This is actually sort of a fun question, as it can lead to a reflection of the blogger's personality. I've been accused of having OCD, but I recently re-organized my links: Neighborhood (like Michael suggested), Church (Christian), Office (tech), and World (generally defies categorization... and purely reciprocal links go here).

Then, I found a need (or at least a use) for a fifth category, one that I can't come up with a good name for but which I'm temporarily calling Serendipitous Finds. These are blogs which I've accidentally stumbled across, and they've led me to others, and so on...and the whole shooting match gets linked in this category. It will likely be a dynamic category, with individual members either being dropped or moved into one of the permanent categories, depending on how my perception of the blog evolves (sometimes my first impressions aren't correct).

I like to weed out the blogs I no longer visit regularly, but I also don't see anything wrong with having a huge blogroll. My blogroll is for my use primarily, and only secondarily for my visitors. If I really want to call attention to another blog, I'll do it via a post.

I commented recently in an 'interview' that I prefer to have a smaller number and build some relational depth and sense of community with key people both in a virtual sense and in an incarnational sense. I use "guest" voices as an opportunity to rotate blogs that interest me...hopefully people don't get to offended or hurt when they get taken out of this section (being a people person, I hate 'deleting' voices so I've been disciplined about keeping the core "voices" small). A automated 'rotational' subsection section could be integrated - blogs in this section rotating every month or so.

You know. I don't often look at other peoples' lists. My lists are the short lists of blogs I want to make sure I check out on a daily basis. I've got another tab of bookmarks in the browser of blogs I check out every now and then. I link to the sites I like to visit.

I do have a couple blogs. The more "personal" blog links more to sites I read more for the personal commentary. The more "preacher" blog links to sites I read more for the preachery stuff. Though that's not a perfect breakdown & there is some crossover.
