Blogathon - Entry 1

21 January, 2004 3:52 AM

Good morning and welcome to my 2004 Blogathon. It is 3.52am in Melbourne - my name is Darren Rowse and I shall be your host for the next 24 hours. My goal is to blog for all that time, posting at at least a rate of one post per 15 minutes. I won't guarantee that this will be 'pretty' blogging. 96 deadlines in the next 24 hours I'll be scrambling for topics, grammar, spelling and sensibilities. So please bare with me.

Why am I doing this?

As most of you will know I'm not doing this for fun (although I hope it will be) — I'm doing it to raise money for a very worthwhile cause — 'Philippines Pedicab Project' — I'll blog more about this project later on but basically the money given during the next 24 hours and beyond is going towards providing families in a slum in Manilla with a way of making an income for the rest of their lives. It will play a huge part in breaking the poverty cycle in a very empowering and ongoing way. Until I blog later on about this project you can find out more information here.

Make a donation - If you would like to make a difference today and have a few spare dollars I'd like to ask you to consider making a contribution to this worthwhile cause. You can do so via credit card or paypal account by clicking on the following button.

You can also send a cheque but please note that there are considerable costs in getting non Australian dollars cheques cashed so it may not be worth it. Email me for more info on cheques.

Our first target is $270(US) which will be enough for one pedicab — I'd like to think that we can easily reach that figure and extend well beyond it to purchase at least one more.

Thanks to those who have already donated — the tally is currently at just under $85US which puts us well on the way.

I'm not interested in stretching people beyond their financial means on this, so please don't feel pressured — if you'd like to support in other ways can I encourage you to let others know about this project that might be in a position to lend a hand. You might do this by linking to this page on your own blog or emailing a friend (see the link to do so easily below).

The other way you can be involved is to keep me company today — shoot me an email, leave a comment, suggest a topic for me to blog about or say hi on MSN messenger (daziii@hotmail.com is my msn ID — it is NOT my email address) — whatever you like. I may not have heaps of time to email or chat all the time — but I will appreciate knowing someone is there.

I hereby declare the 2004 blogathon open.

Gidday Darren,
What a GREAT IDEA! Thanks so much for doing this...we are very proud of you. Hope you can keep the eyes open as the deepest darkest part of the day hits....wish I was in Melbourne because I'd come and sit on your verandah with you and encourage your blogging!
The Pedicabs are a great project and a poor family is empowered every time we are able to provide one to them to run as a business.
I'll be in touch soon,

Great idea. Have ridden in quite a few of those pedicabs when I lived in the PI.

Good luck with your blogathon.

Thanks Darren. We have just done our review and evaluation on the development of pedicab project and we found out that there is an increase of 200% income in each family who owned a pedicab thru this project. 8 families were already benefited on this. Nestor
