Just how exactly is the blogosphere a community? The first and best piece of advice I received lo those many years ago when I began blogging was this: "Whatever you do, don't buy into the lie that blogging is a community." And so far I haven't. And so far holding back from this myth has served me well. There is no communal connection between myself and those I read or link. No more so than there exists a community between myself and the printed authors I read. I mean, don't get me wrong. I understand the need some people feel to "connect" to online personalities and that the internet offers a fairly good facsimile of real relationships in some ways, but i think "community" pushes the envelope a little much.
