Bishop: I'll pay white people to attend my church

2 August, 2003 5:42 PM

Just saw this article about a Bishop Caldwell who is paying white people to go to church!

This month, Caldwell is going to pay white people to attend his sermons. It's five bucks for a Sunday service, 10 for a Thursday service. And the idea is already stirring up controversy.

Hmmm....bizarre....but maybe this is how I could attract a few more males to Living Room!

This was mentioned on a local talk radio show here in Seattle. I think it's kind of crass, but it sends the message that the church takes diversity seriously. Overall, it's probably not the best strategy, but maybe it'll get people concerned about desegregating the church. It certainly is making headlines.

What about maybe paying the drug addict to attend service? an alcoholic? an abuser? heck...in some ways it might not be a bad idea to attract someone to attend church, to hear the gospel, who may not otherwise even consider it! Then again, would we be trusting in the Holy Spirit to do His work if we started "bribing" people?
