Australian Idol Theories

13 October, 2003 10:05 PM

Keep up to date with season two of Australian Idol at Australian Idol Blog. What will the Australian Idol Results be who will be the winner? I'd tip Courtney, Casey, Anthony or Hayley as possible winners but follow it all at Australian Idol Blog.

Update: Cosima Withdraws from the Show!

And then there was 5. In tonight's elimination show there was a little controversy.

It came about when Paulini was voted by the public into the bottom three for the week. Luckily for her only one was eliminated tonight and it was young Levi.

Prevailing public opinion is that Paulini is one of the best (if not THE best) singer of the finalists. I would rate her in the top three with Guy and Cosima. After Sunday night's show the judges nominated Paulini as being one of the best singers but it seems the Australian public didn't quite agree.

The controversy of the night came after it was revealed Paulini was among the three lowest contestants and the judges were asked for comment.

Mark said 'it's a disgrace'. Then he virtually admitted that he gave false praise to Levi last night - what a stupid man.

Marcia was 'speechless', but managed to also say, 'I really hope Australia are voting for the contestant with the best voice'.

You see there are some 'theories' floating around that Australia might be voting along gender and racial lines.

I'm not sure that that is the problem. (although I have previously wondered about it) I don't think we need to leap to accusing the public of racist voting just yet. Instead I think there might be a couple of other reasons.

1. Australia is voting for an 'idol' and not a 'singer' as such. I think Paulini is a natural performer, she's better than half of them, but I'm not sure she's an 'idol' as such. As I've said, she's right up there for me and I will not be disappointed if she wins — but it won't surprise me if she's pipped by one of the others with a more marketable image.

2. I also wonder if the voting system might be to blame. Australia is asked to vote for their favourite not their least favourite. I think most people would rank Paulini in their top two or three but perhaps not their number one. How many people will vote for more than one person? V tried to vote tonight, but it was going to be for Cosima, even though she loves Paulini, I wonder how many others are voting that way.

Perhaps if they took the Big Brother approach and voted out the least favourite we'd end up 'evicting' the worst performer, instead of the one that doesn't attract primary votes. Maybe I'm drawing too fine a line on this, but it's a possibility.

I think you're right about the problem with the voting system... Based on quality of performance Millsie has done nothing special, and apart from Shannon's rendition of "What about me?" a few weeks ago, he's been pretty average too. What they have going for them is their appeal to the demographic that watches this type of show and their willingness to actually vote for their favourite.

But, regardless of who actually wins the contest, several of those remaining have already secured themselves a career in the music industry.

vlado » 14 October, 2003 10:18 AM

I have to agree with your theories here.

If I could vote for who I wanted to lose I would be voting. you can bet on that.

Millsie sucks so badly. He cant sing, he cant dance and he has the charisma of a pimp on crack.

Shannon is nice to look at, but he cant hold a tune.

If Australia was voting for the people they hated, Paulini, Guy and Cosima will be the last three.

Paulini has the best voice and the most talent, but I think the majority of voters are prepubescent girls - the kind of who listen to TripleM and think Avril Lavigne is punk.

pixelkitty » 14 October, 2003 5:43 PM

I agree the dudes can't sing...except Guy, he's got some groove. But to be honest there's no Britney Spears in there - so maybe it will have to come down to talent?

Luke » 15 October, 2003 6:30 PM

Agree that it's quite obvious that Australia is not voting for the best voice. On that score Paulini and Guy would have to fight it out for the title - those two are definitely the most musical and always pitch perfect.

However, you only had to watch the "Up Close and Personal" special to see what has been happening. Who are the fans? Girls!

Millsy, who sings almost everything slightly flat has heaps of little girly fans who, besides baking him cakes, are going to vote for him regardless of how awful his performance may be.

Voting contestants out is the way to go...it would be a much fairer system.

Hi there
I am from down under in New Zealand.
And have to say , what a shock to see Paulini go.
I feel her and Guy should of been the final 2, I had thought Shannon or Cosmia would of gone.
But then i thought on a more philisopical note, Maybe God has better plans for Paulini.
It is encouraging to see some Christians in the top 4.
I only hope Guy makes it to the final.
I agree that the reason Comsima and Shannon got more votes is not on voice, but on look and that they have lively personalites that sparkle.

American Idol voters seemed more to vote on voice.

Nic » 31 October, 2003 5:26 AM

I would be interested to see who wins, now that guy and paulini were in the bottom 2 last week. Cosima is alright, and so's shannon, but guy and paulini are the bomb. I do think that race has something to do with it. Not racism but idolism. Idols are role-models and most of the people voting identify with white-euro looking contestants. Someone said to me that paulini is not pretty and that got me thinking. The person that said this identifies pretty with caucasian-euro features. This is normal in a society where even amongst ethnic communities ( broad sweeping PC term) people with lighter skin, straight small noses, round eyes etc, are considered prettier. just look at halle berry and tara banks, and the list continues. In India even the strongly enforced caste system can be read through lightness of skin. In much the same way entertainment role-models have to be thin, they have to match euro ideas of beauty.
As the competition continued I thought I was going to be pleasantly surprised by the outcome of the votes, but now I know better.
P.S. voting is probably indicative of economic/racial lines as well - haves and have not's with access to mobile phones and money to call so frivolously, but this is excactly the market they're going for. They do know their business well.

So Cosima has decided to leave. What a crying shame - especially considering the nicely hidden fact that Paulini actually came through with the highest number of votes the week earlier and it was due to a misspelling of her name (Pauline) that she disappeared. For this someone should be shot as one of Australia's finest new talents was removed from what I believe was a finals appearance at the Opera House.
As for Cosima - is AI going to give all the money spent in the voting to charity this week? You can't tell me that the decision was not known prior to the running of the show last night, or did Cos run out the back during the last ad break and hastily write a little speech.
I firmly believe, given the Paulini fiasco, that the correct and proper thing to do would be for another installment with Paulini, Guy and Shannon fighting for a place.
If there is to be another series of this let's hope the voting is looked at a little better, and hope that the Australian public aren't confused between the shows Australian Idol, Popstars and Search for a Supermodel as seems to have been the case in this it's first year.

CJ » 4 November, 2003 5:24 AM

Yep - Guy and Paulini are definately the best singers. I wish Paulini was going to the Opera House with Guy instead of Shannon.

BTna » 7 November, 2003 3:13 PM

I was watching the whole current affairs bit and totally agree that paying for votes is OUTRAGEOUS.

And Ch 10/BMG actually loose out!! I mean if there was a web poll on who Australia really wanted NO WAY would Shannon be in it and that seems to be common knowledge to everyone but the Producers. Are they deaf and blind? They try to make bucks on voting but really loose out b/c their 'Idol' is a mediocre singer who'll fizzle out in 12 months. If Paulini had won they'd have a long term STAR on their hands, someone who can actually sing. The quality of performers left in this show is really nothing AMAZING and to me it's all b/c of this stupid voting system. I hope Ch 10 have learnt their lesson.

(I love Guy BTW, hope he wins)

To who it may concern
I just wanted to inform you that the show is called Australian Idol for a reason that is because it is for people all over Australia. Not just the big places and states like Perth and Qlds and all those sort of places. Isn't the Northern Territory on the map then why are we not in the run to become the next Australian idol. Why cant there be auditions in the Northern Territory. Don't you think that we should at least have a chance, there is a lot of talent in the Northern Territory, but you just cant see it. Because you all just think people from the Northern Territory are just a bunch of cowgirls and cowboys which is Wrong.
Just because Northern Territory is not as good as all the other states but there is talent that you all just cant see. I am just writing this e-mail to inform you that there is people from the Northern Territory that would love to audition but cant afford to go to another state when the could hold auditions in Darwin which is the capital of the Northern Territory so please give the Northern Territory people a chance to become the next Ausralian Idol and hold auditions in Darwin

Yours Sincerely Brett Johnston

i hope paulini gets a record deal, coz i reli love her voice and wood love to hear her sing one more time soon!! sign her bmg

sarah » 22 January, 2004 11:48 AM

I agree with the fact that Guy was an increadible talent but what is the huge issue with shannon. He is also a talented singer in his own right and deserves as much of a chance as the rest. True, he may not have a perfect voice but he inspires the crowd and to have made it to the second position someone must have been voting for him. He didnt get there on his own.

hey every1,
jst writin to say shannon sux!!! he cant sing at all!! No one can wake up and c hes all about sympathy votes and people think he's hot (are they blind or wat?). It is a singing competition and Guy won (thank the lord). He is the best by far. People call him ugly etc, but he is gorgeous and talented. Shannons old and ugly and can only sing one style if u call screeching singing. Anyway, y do people have to be such bitches about Guy. Theyre jealous and should face it that the best person won and atleast Australia knew what they were doing (except for when guy was in the bottom 2.) I think Guy and Paulini should have been the final 2.
I know im right and i dont care at all what others say. I am proud that i can see the truth.

hey all,
Guy sebastian is the hottest most talented person ive ever seen and heard! Go the fro!!!
Australia is the best for picking him as the idol. Unlike popstars, the winner actually was the most talented!!
Guy rocks!!!!
American idol isnt very good. Its a little boring and doesnt have anyone that strikes you. I think season 3 is enough to stop at now.

missy jones » 29 March, 2004 8:55 PM

i thought the show was great. i liked Shannon but i think it was good that Guy won because she was more of an austalian idol because he could sing all different songs.

Zoey » 27 May, 2004 1:25 PM

almost 6 months gone and gay churchie boy is almost unheard of

Me » 9 June, 2004 10:15 PM

Paulini should have won idol. I like Shannon too. Guy sucks totally. His sounds like a cat in pain. What's with all the ridiculous vocal gymnastics?

doof » 16 June, 2004 9:08 PM

Excuse me, but Guy Sebastian is in no way ugly. He is good looking and it's only his hair that is a wreck, but most people can't see past his horrid hair and that is the reason why some people think he's ugly. And that shows how close-minded most people are.
Because there are so many people who were 'ugly ducklings' before and now all of a sudden, people start seeing that they really are hot and all they had to do is make a few changes. (And no, I am not talking about cosmetic surgery. I'm talking about the condition of their skin and their hair for example.) You gotta imagine Guy without that horrible hair. I am a guy but i know a good-looking guy when i see one.
And you can say all you want about the way he sings some of the high notes, but it's all about preference on that one and i know alot of people who do to. Because I actually like hearing him sing like that while others might think it's annoying or just plain weird. I like him singing some high notes like that, because it's as if he is showing a side that says 'I am singing a really high note and i'm hitting it with everything i got' and a side that shows he is in fact human but he is a great human being indeed. But even if you don't like the way he hits some of the high notes in some of his performances, he sang 'Climb Every Mountain' without doing that with the high notes and his voice just reigned.
If you listen to his voice carefully in that performance, you'll notice that he is in fact going really high without doing that thing with the notes and you'll also notice the beautifully rare sound in his voice. He makes the high notes just echo in his voice and that creates an unusual and touching sound.

tworkit » 27 June, 2004 2:39 AM

no way paulini should of won, she was shit

Shannon was the real winner

me again » 18 July, 2004 10:08 PM

Paulini rocks! Guy sounds like he has a pole stuck up his arse and looks like a homeless person. Shannon is a true blue aussie but his voice sucks. He screaches too much. Paulini all the way. Don't forget to support paulini and buy her singles and albums. She needs all the support she can get.

Justin Hodges » 6 August, 2004 10:28 PM
