Australian Idol - The Winner is....

9 November, 2003 8:45 PM

Keep up to date with season two of Australian Idol at Australian Idol Blog.
Related Links: - Guy Wins - A reflection on Guy's Christianity - Angels Brought Me Here - Lyrics

Tonight was the last night of competition in the Australian Idol series. Shannon and Guy sang three songs each. One for both was the 'winners single' that will be released when the winner is announced.

The past few months have been really interesting to watch. Controversy, Some great new artists identified and the Australian public whipped into a bit of a frenzy. Today out shopping I heard the show talked about as I walked by people four times! I'm still surprised by the passion of some watchers of the show.

Anyway - here is my blow by blow account of tonight's show. (written as I watch and in a rush, sorry for the grammar!)

Song 1 — Guy opened the show with his version of the single 'Angels Brought me Here'. The song is not really his style but he did pretty well. It has been reported that this week Guy has been sick with the flu — you could tell a little during this song especially in his lower and higher register. Not the spine tingling song we've come to expect from Mr Sebastian.

Song 2 — Shannon started with 'Please Forgive Me' (made famous by Brian Adams). Shannon has been criticised for not knowing how to move — he is improving but he still doesn't seem to know what to do with his left hand. Shannon might have had the flu this week too by the sound of some of his high nights. I wish he'd open his mouth a little more. He kind of looks a bit depressed tonight. I can't stand the song — but it suits his voice - he sang it better than Brian Adams (which isn't hard in my humble opinion). He got the crowd going.

Song 3 - Guy came out second with 'I'll be there' — (originally by the Jackson Five). This song is much more his style. As usual you can see his talent not only in the singing but in the arrangement of the song. The crowd loves this guy — although its not quite the heights that we've seen before. His voice is edgey but he controls it well. I would have thought these two would have picked more powerful songs than these for their last show. Still - Guy is fantastic in this song which shows off his voice nicely.

Song 4 - Shannon picked a song by Aussie artist Jimmy Barnes — 'Working Class Man'. Ever sing I first heard him sing I thought he should sing this song as he's got a very Barnsy like voice — raspy. Shannon came out this time wearing a white muscle top...hmmmm. It got the girls screaming. He's definitely getting better at getting the audience involved in his performances. The last part of his song really lifted — the crowd went wild again.

Song 5 - Guy's last song of the competition is 'Crazy in Love' (by Beyonce). This is more like the Guy we're used to — well it sort of looks like him — he's wearing a fur coat, sunglasses and nose ring! He's attempting to rev up the crowd and its working. I have to say its not a song that really is showing off his voice to well. It is modern and should get the younger crowd on side I guess. I'm a little confused by his song choice, this is his last chance to leave an impression. It's a bit of a gamble. His talent does shine through though — what a voice!

Song 6 - Shannon's turn for the single 'Angels Brought me Here'. He starts off seated (has anyone done that before?) His lower and higher registers are a bit shaky when he sings softly. I think this song is quite challenging for both of them tonight. Having said that he did pretty well and made it his own — almost as good as Guy sang it apart from a few dodgy notes. He ended with a tear in his eye — I'm touched.

Judges comments didn't really say much about tonight's performances — it was more of a 'mutual admiration society'.

So who will win? Guy or Shannon? In the lead up to this show I think Guy has been the most outstanding performer out of the whole final 12. I've always thought Shannon has been a little 'wooden'.

But on tonight's performance I'd have to say that the tables turned a little and Guy came back to the field. His voice was obviously affected by his flu and Shannon did better than normal.

Guy chose songs that will appeal to both young and old - Shannon picked two 'classics' that will probably appeal to an older demographic. Which will pay off?

I'd say its neck and neck. I guess it depends if people are voting on tonight's performance or on the series as a whole. If I vote it will probably be for Guy who has consistently been brilliant — til tonight.

I wonder if Guy and Shannon have been pushed too hard this week doing recording, video clips, promotional tours etc? Seems like song choice might have been a little rushed — rehearsal time pushed aside and health let to slip.

Anyway its not up to me. Australia — who is your Idol? I guess we'll find out Wednesday 19th November. Feel free to share your thoughts in comments.

I really like this update especially as i am in perth i cant view the show at the same time. Thanks Darren!

Hi there,

I believe that no matter how either singer sang tonight whoever your favourite was before tonights show will still be your favourite, people made their minds up on who they would vote for a long time ago and I do not think a bad performace would change anyones mind, the only thing that we would wonder is who cosimas fans would vote for, and with every belief they would put their votes forward for real talent, and we know there is only 1 clear display of exceptional talent in this competition and that is guy.

Stacey » 9 November, 2003 8:15 PM

SHANNON ROCKED!!!

Allison » 9 November, 2003 8:16 PM

I'm here in NZ so i don't get to see the show till Tuesday nite. Sites like this really help me out, so thanks Darren.

i agree with Stacey. It's about fan bases now and I just hope that Guys is the bigger and stronger. The man with the 'fro has never disappointed and his talents are multi-faceted! Shannon is a courageous performer, but Guy is superior.

Sals » 9 November, 2003 8:19 PM

no problems sals and stacey...feel free to come back and let us know who you think will win when you see the show!

Darren Rowse » 9 November, 2003 8:21 PM

Hey dude, we're watching the replay so it's good to see what's coming up. And apparently I missed Guy's second song...must have been too focussed on the computer.

Go Guy. Shannon's a nice bloke, but he hasn't got the special something. And he whimped it a bit on Working Class Man. Tough to do Barnsey.

Luke » 9 November, 2003 8:21 PM

STUFF SHANNON HE SUCKS

GUY ROCKS MY WORLD
SMS 'GUY' TO 188 99 66

Kelli » 9 November, 2003 8:29 PM

If it comes down to sheer talent and vocal ability then Guy should win. His performance was affected by the flue, but although I was concerned before the show about his song choices,
I thought the beyonce song he sang really was fantastic. I am a mother of an 18 year old and I enjoyed it as much as she did.

I truly hope that Guy will win, because although Shannon is great he has no individual style of his own.

Maggie » 9 November, 2003 8:31 PM

Hey Darren
Good site mate :-)

Just been reading some comments from last weeks show in regards to Cosima's exit, wow there are some losers out there.
This girl is under contract with channel 10, and BMG for the next 12 months. She can't even fart without their permission, so ease off on the comments people. It was all for ratings and money by channnel 10, she had to do what she was told.
Look forward to your come back Cosima, the show is dull and boring without you.
Hugs BJ

BJ » 9 November, 2003 8:35 PM

Shannon was by far the better singer tonight- i'm a little confused by your statements.

i love his choice of songs...and he sang them brilliantly........shivers were sent up my spine every time he sang.

I'm a little over guy's wanna be U.S R & B singer.

The ozzie rocker will succeed!!!!! HE WAS FANTASTIC.

Kristy » 9 November, 2003 8:37 PM

When it comes down to it, Guy's rendition of the Angels single was so much more better and heartfelt. He's more versatile, he understands music (he arranges heaps of the songs himself), his voice is such a beautiful instrument.

Due to consistency & sheer talent & just what a great GUY he is, GUY SHOULD WIN.

VOTE!

Kirsten » 9 November, 2003 8:37 PM

we are voting for a person who will eventually represent Australia...that person should be Shannon!

kanga » 9 November, 2003 8:50 PM

I agree that the tonight's show wasn't what one expected. I thought the boys would sing better songs. Guy chose to sing the Jackson 5's I'll Be There but it would have been better if Guy chose to sing Ben instead. Who ever composed the music of the Angel song has got no taste. I didn't understand the tune one bit. Shannon sing through his nose and he swallows the words sometimes. GUY should win as he's a versatile singer, so let's all vote for GUY SEBASTIAN.

Jane » 9 November, 2003 8:53 PM

These fella's have been pushed to hard and it showed in their voices tonight.
They should have been at their most powerful and instead we heard a bit of a struggle.
Still, I love Guy's singing.

Nellie » 9 November, 2003 8:55 PM

"GUY should win as he's a versatile singer" he only has one sound, which is rather irritating if it's not the sound for you?

To me, he's too Lionel Ritchie, looks weird, and just doesn't appeal at all.

Shannon is more of a rocker than I like, but he has the voice that says "I'm Australian", which will be great internationally.

» 9 November, 2003 9:00 PM

Did you hear the crowd chanting Shannon's name tonight?? initiated by Millsy & Paulini!!!

It was right after 'Working Class Man'- the highlight of the night.

Well done Shannon.....you are an inspiration to Australia....we want you to represent us!

k » 9 November, 2003 9:02 PM

SHANNON WAS THE BEST
any fans out there come and join us at

were all in the chat room talkin about shan

Amanda » 9 November, 2003 9:03 PM

Shannon was awesome.....

He was by far the best tonight.
I don't understand how ppl can say that guy is more versatile when all he sings is R & B. He feminises EVERYTHING.

Shannon has such a strong, passionate voice that makes you love him more & more each performance.

poppy » 9 November, 2003 9:04 PM

Shannon was absoutely BRILLIANT tonight. I found his version of the single much more heartfelt and emotional. Guys version came across a bit boy band.

Stephanie » 9 November, 2003 9:14 PM

GUY should win this competition as he is the most talented guy I've ever seen.
GUY ROCKS!!!
GO THE FRO!!!
Vote for GUY!! Let him represents Australian!!

jenn » 9 November, 2003 9:19 PM

Excuse me? I personally don't think that just because Shannon sounds like Barnsey he should represent Australia. Why does the rough wooden voice have to represent all Australians? I certainly don't live in the outback with me old ute and ripped blue jeans. Shannon has indeed grown throughout the competition and to see him get emotional tonight was so touching, but the ocker bloke is the kind of stereotype that we should be challenging, because we are not all like that.
I truly sympathise with both of them for having such a hard slog for the past week, and they both come out brilliantly, but at least Guy didn't use the "Oh, I was sick that's why I wasn't my best" excuse. He has remained outstanding throughout the competition and he will be a true inspiration for Australians through his messages.
Alicia

Alicia » 9 November, 2003 9:20 PM

No you are right......GUy hasn't pulled out the- i'm sick excuse, but his fans are doing it for him.

The newspaper reported that Shannon was also not feeling well, but you won't find a single fan who is prepared to make excuses for him. He was brilliant tonight- the best performer by far.

As for the competition- it's up to you who you will vote for-
1) one who can sing ONLY R & B
2) or one who can sing everything BUT R & B

kristy » 9 November, 2003 9:25 PM

The Condo man pulled out the three top performances of the night when they counted most. Dicko was about weeping with joy!

And may Barnsey weep, too, because he never, ever! sang WORKING MAN so frigging brilliantly!

I hated the new Angels single when Guy sang it. Found it totally boring.

But when Shannon sang it he turned it anthemic--even hymnal. He gave it skin, bones, guts and texture.

It became beauteous! :)

Guy sounded as if he had frogs crawling all over his vocal cords. This was not his night. The Beyonce song didn't work and the magic was not there.

Tonight the camera fell in love with Shannon.

Well done, Shannon. Extraordinarily well done!

Off to watch it all again!

Sleep easy. I think your dad is smiling.

:)

traveltart » 9 November, 2003 10:18 PM

Yeah Guy was good tonight...as per norm..but he hasn't changed much thruout the whole competition and shannon has. Shannon will be the one I'm voting for definitely. As someone said earlier.. who wants the same RnB voice to sing everything? shannon has shown tonight he can do Barnsey "gravelly" to chisel "mellow" WELL DONE SHANNON! Go the aussies.

Kay » 9 November, 2003 10:21 PM

Shannon has been impressive the whole way through where as Guy only really started getting my attention when he did 'Your The Voice' and 'Doves Cry' as I like both performers alot I was reserving my judgment on who I wanted to win till I seen both perform tonight. I must say Shannon to win, he was awsome tonight and he performed the 'Angel' song much better than Guy.

Hope » 9 November, 2003 10:24 PM

please, when shannon came out, and got into a rendition of working class man, i was appalled to see how sterotyped he let himself become! congrats on both of them getting this far, however in the scheme of things, we want a singer who will, chop and change things up a bit on the international music scene, guy has his preference of r&b, shannon his rock, however, guy has done the rock, and done it well, i can't say the same for shannon on the other hand. go guy, you're a true musician, in every essence of the word.

tim » 9 November, 2003 10:27 PM

You have to vote for the performer who performed consistently throughout the series...not just for the last performance...

joeyblue » 9 November, 2003 10:30 PM

What was with that Beyonce song? How funny!
Like both shan and Guy...but Shan did a much better version of the 1st single. Thanks for showing us what your really made of shannon.
Goodluck to both.

LukeG » 9 November, 2003 10:35 PM

Darren,

I hope your preaching capabilities exceed your abilities as a judge.

What is an emerging church and what has it got to do with Australian Idol?

Paul » 9 November, 2003 10:37 PM

DAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN BOUT!!!!!!

Shannon was pure dead brilliant.....man, there were no dry eyes or seats in the house....

was loving it....

Lisa » 9 November, 2003 10:57 PM

I think the song the Angels have brought me here, has Guy's name written all over it, i think he was amazing in all three of his performance, once again shannon bored me and when he was singing please forgive me i thought where is bryan addams when you need him and the new single the angels have brought me here did not suit shannon at all

I say guy all the way vote for guy sms guy to 1889966 or phone 1902 55 55 62

Mary Anne » 9 November, 2003 11:07 PM

I think when both covered the same song it showed who really did have the better voice on the night...it was clearly Shannon!

I also feel that he is MUCH better than Jimmy Barnes.

I enjoyed his version of the 'Angel' song showed just how well he could work with new/original music, which is what people should be looking at.

ozzgirl » 9 November, 2003 11:34 PM

Here Here.......if i have to listen to the same feminine R & B voice - i'll go mad

Shannon is a masculine, passionate rocker- GO HIM!!!

poppy » 9 November, 2003 11:38 PM

CALM DOWN, people. Let's all be Aussie cool.

Tonight we had a really interesting display of two eminently musical and very different blokes. Shannon has outdone himself, and it was great to se he can pull it of.
Guy's performance was a "full package" so no need to be disappointed, although his flu did take its toll.

Shannon could become a real rock star, his voice is great for rock. My only concern is that the rest of the world will not consider how much "Aussie" he or Guy are. Remember, every competitor in the World Series will be from a different culture, so any of our two idols will be up against very original performances.

So, the victory in the World Idol has to be built on some common grounds. Here is where Guy's "full package" could fit in. He's got the voice. He's got the moves. He's got a smile that could melt rocks, and he is still original enough to really stand out.

If we put the World Idol aside, Shannon will probably do great in Australia if he wins. Guy would still get a label behind him due to a huge fan base and the fact that he can make his own music.

If Guy wins, that would probably give a bit of trouble to Shannon since he will need much more done for him. Still he is likely to find a way out.

It has been a great show tonight, and I truly wish all the best to both contestants. So please show your support to both and don't forget to vote for one. And PLEASE don't flame any others.

P.S.: To the unsigned poster - Lionel Ritchie's magic is and has been working for many years now. Maybe it could work for us too?

Damir Kalajdzic » 10 November, 2003 12:15 AM

i definitely understand what you're saying......but Shannon's character IS more like the 'Australian culture' rather than R & B which emulates the US style.

Whether we won world idol or not, i don't want us making a fool of ourselves trying to sing like R & B artists. We would be laughed at. Rock would make us individual.

Who cares whether or not we win......i jsut want us to have pride

kristy » 10 November, 2003 12:20 AM

Shannon would do great in Australia, but overseas? I really doubt it - unless it's the country music scene (but hey we've already got Keith Urban).

Guy has a great chance of doing well in both Australian and also internationally. He has that 'X' factor.

Don't get me wrong, I like Shannon and all, but when it comes down to it, Guy is the real deal.

Breanna » 10 November, 2003 12:28 AM

I could not tell the difference between Guys first song and the second they both sounded the same to me. His (Angel version) same. Guy has a tremendous talent but he sounds the same with every song he does. I feel he would look like, sound like all other American singers.
Shannon has just continued to amaze me. He has lifted the bounderies and sings, rock, ballards etc.
You can still see Shannon going in the future.
Guy 20 yrs. with a fro o.k. 30/40 no way. yuk. So, it's Shannon for me.

Dee » 10 November, 2003 1:01 AM

Shaanon that is what I'm talking about!!!!
You outperformance last night and you rock.
Love your version of Angels brought me here sang with such passion and emtion!!!!!

Sparki » 10 November, 2003 8:42 AM

I think both Shannon and Guy did a great job last night, they always do, such different talents, such great humble guys, i wish them both every success and happiness, but for me "Go Shannon" your version of "Angels" was incredible, its definately your single!!! and working class man! he rocked all night, Guy did to, but like one of the other posts said, i am loving the versatility and different themes Shannon goes with, Guy sounds very similar in most songs, BUT there is no doubting that he is an amazing talent!

So wish they could BOTH win!!! but Shannon gets my vote.

Ronnie » 10 November, 2003 9:33 AM

O oh O oh O oh O oh......
GUY was brilliant despite the flu!
We shouldn't judge him only by this performance.
He has been outstanding all the way: What a wonderful world, When doves cry, Everything I do (I do it for you, You're the voice, and especially, Climb every mountain.
I liked his rendition of Angels.
He is the 'whole package' - a great singer, arranger and musician.

O oh O oh O oh O oh......

Go 4 the idol GUY!

Blu » 10 November, 2003 10:08 AM

SHANNON ROCKS!!! enough said he has always been my favourite since 'better man' he has a far better voice than Guy!!
His last nights performances just blew me away!

caitlin » 10 November, 2003 3:13 PM

Hi! Just wanted to say how much of a fan i have been of Guy's since the beginning of the show.. He has been absolutely, consistently fantastic through out the competition..

I have never been worried about him winning because i knew that no matter what, he'll have his recording contract and we will hear more from him.. I know that's still true, but ever since i heard him sing "Angels brought me here" i have been praying for him to win, because i would love to buy his version of this single.. It definitely has his name written all over it and i will be sorely disappointed if he werent able to release this song..

All the best Guy!!!

Giselle » 10 November, 2003 3:22 PM

Someone (I think) said something about how Shannon didn't sing "Working Class Man" like Jimmy Barnes does. My Mum also made the comment that he wasn't putting his heart and soul into it. Although I like Guy over Shannon, I do have to stand up for him. If anyone was to sing Working Class Man like Barnsey does, they too will end up with throat nodules. This is the same thing as Cosima has. Throat nodules is caused by incorrect vocal technique (eg singing from the throat rather than the diaphragm and stomach). It is very rare that a person recovers completely from the condition, and recovery often involves being taught how to sing again. It is painful and definately not desired. It can also be caused from streaching your voice repetitively, and not warming up properly.
I think everyone that was, and is, in Australian Idol has done, and is doing, a fantastic job. It takes alot of guts to stand up and sing infront of a couple of people (whether you know them or not) and it is even harder to sing infront of millions (even if it is over the television). I say a huge congratulations to all of them, and wish all, not just the winner, the very very best in the future.

Kylie » 10 November, 2003 3:54 PM

Guy is enormously talented and has a huge future.Personally my favourite music style is R&B.
BUT! Shannon has REALLY stretched himself - he has done Frank Sinatra,Jimmy Barnes, Powderfinger...etc...many different genre - not just one. On top of that he has never once slipped when being interviewed. He never forgets anyone and the other contestants love him!! On top of all THAT I think Shannon needs this more than anyone else.He has 2 little boys to look after and a farm to try and get back. Man he bloody deserves it and he has our vote!

sandra » 10 November, 2003 4:54 PM

Shannon,

I want you to know that you bring that old sexy magic back into music.

Thank god for you!

I have to say that I am old enough to be a grandmother but I have not kept up with pop music for 15-20 years because I find it, in the main, meaningless and beat-driven to the exclusion of lyrics and magic.

Until you came along and sang these heartland rock songs in Australian Idol.

I am not sure if BMG or Channel 10 expected it, but a by-product of this show could be the regeneration of the baby-boomers interest in music. It has certainly happened with me.

I would buy your CD, Shannon, and I haven't bought a pop CD in 10 or more years.

It has been an absolute joy listening to you. Last night you brought me to tears. It is great to feel so moved by music again.

Your family must be so proud of you.

Celia » 10 November, 2003 5:00 PM

please remember that we're not voting on just the one set of performances, we're voting on consistency throughout the series. and please don't bring shannon's situation into it, it's not fair to either himself or guy! for me, guy has been the more consistent performer, and even though i love rock, (pearl jam is my fav band) i have been in love with guy's performances, week in, week out, i can appreciate the musical talent he does have. go the fro

tim » 10 November, 2003 5:33 PM

OKay let me tell you that in my corner of the world 'NZ' GUY ROCKS!!! Hows that for international fame AND I would buy his CD's. SO Australia if you are looking to have an idol of international fame I think Guy is definitely the better choice :-)

Pat » 10 November, 2003 8:00 PM

Yes, yes, you Shannon lovers. I'm so glad Shannon is in the competition to sing such a range of songs, from the works of Bryan Adams, to the ouvre of Jimmy Barnes . . .

. . . wait a minute. That's not a range. It's a niche. It's the hunky man soul ballad niche.

Shannon picks godawful predictable songs all of which are played during the 'easy listening from twenty years back' mix. Guy has range.

Now, if only I was feeling charitable enough to SMS my hard earned cash to the coffers of Channel Ten . . .

Lyn » 11 November, 2003 8:31 AM

Gee.....Ok, i am not a Shannon fan as matter of fact i hated him right from the start BUT now I am starting to think that Shannon should win..I mean I feel sorry for the guy....He's an australian farmer for goodness sake, can you imagine how hard his life might have been during the drought season? If Shannon looses i would not feel sorry for him but for all the Condobolin people who supported him.....their support is far greater than adelaides support to Guy......Shannon would have my vote not because hes talented but because i feel sorry for him...call it a sympathy vote

rcat » 11 November, 2003 11:55 AM

and another thing...what the heck is their single all about?.."angels brought me here". I mean angels didnt brought them there. Hypocritical, manipulative producers who feeds on money, money, money did!....talk about cruelty

rcat » 11 November, 2003 11:59 AM

I just want to say, Australian idol isn't about voting for people who you feel sorry for, ok fair enough shannon has a family and financial problems! but who doesn't?
i really believe guy has what it takes to become a success not only here in Australia, but internationally. He has proved how versatile he is, he's come out singing, farnham songs, jackson 5, bryan adams, beyonce, prince...i mean all credit for him to trying new things...

i really hope Australia is voting for talent and not just placing sympathy votes.

Gerry » 11 November, 2003 3:08 PM

i really think ppl need to get over this 'sympathy vote thing.' You are just starting to get scared, as Shannon produced a more than EXCELLENT performance on Sunday night. SO many ppl have made the swap from Guy to Shannon- and rightly so.

You're looking for excuses. If ppl were going for the sympathy vote, guy would win it- look at his unfortunate appearance!

Both idols are fantastic.......get over yourself.

ks » 11 November, 2003 3:17 PM

both idols are fantastic, and why would i start to get scared! guy has performed more consistently in the competition and he deserves to win! at least he won't be getting any sympahty votes!

if anyone should get over themselves its you, you seem to be abit narrow minded on the subject of sympathy votes. I was only replying to the other person who was saying "shannon's getting my vote because i feel sorry for him" which is basically a sympahty vote!

look i'm only stating my opinions...relax will you?

Gerry » 11 November, 2003 3:53 PM

i just have to say that although Shannon's performance of Barnsey's song was good i didn't like the Bryan Adams tune, good song but not for him. As for Guy you could tell he had a rough night but i just have to say thats the first iffy night for Guy, Shannon has had a few. Now i am a Levi supporter so im not being bias as i wasnt originally voting for either Guy or Shannon but i agree that it should come down to talent, and im sorry but that song about Angels was sung perfectly by Guy and i dont think Shannon has the nack for it. I think good luck to both Guy's they have made it this far and should be proud but Guy's one night of iffy choices shouldnt be compared to Shannon's many. And i disagree that Shannons financial hardship should have been mentioned, because its not about that its about voice and i have friends who are voting for Shannon specifically because of that money reason. Guy has been great all the way i feel that no matter what happens he will go far, and just want to add that i dont dislike Shannon but now he has an advantage that is making people vote for him which has nothing to do with his capability of singing, i think he should stick with the Barnsey songs cos thats what he does best, and in all honesty and with no agression or disrespect i think he should leave the slow songs to Guy. Sorry if this is offending anybody but i just think Guy should win hands down no matter what because his voice is just brilliant and only gets better, we shouldnt let sickness or money problems decide on our vote. Thanx ~Julz PS i dont like the comments on Guys looks thats not what he uses to sing ... and if anyone is getting sympathy votes it is Shannon due to 'financial hardship'. I dont like to be mean but hopefully you can see this is just an opinion as i respect everyone elses opinion it is just that sometimes i think things can be taken too far.

Julz » 11 November, 2003 4:35 PM

Just watched the final in NZ tonight and i do not know what the fuss is all about GUY IS STILL DEFINITELY THE BEST! So they were both a little tired, who cares - anyone with ears can tell that Guy has what it takes to be the best for you Aussies! Think the best and you'll think GUY!

Trish » 11 November, 2003 7:40 PM

what are australia doing?
Guy has got better and better each week!
He has definetly been the australian Idol since day one!!
Shannon is too old sorry to say! he wont sell anything cause its the younger generation who will be buying the bulk of the music.
Yesterday at the perth performance the two seperate fan groups was very obvious. the young people were there screaming and holding posters up 4 guy, shannons fans? the mums and dads who brought there kids there.
dont just judge who is going to win on sunday nights performance!! just remember if cosima hadnt pulled out would shannon had been where he is right now???????

ella » 11 November, 2003 7:57 PM

Sympathy votes are soooooo wrong.
And Dicko added to Shannon's sympathy vote by mentioning his Dad in Heaven.

Please! That was so wrong of him to do that.

The show is supposed to be about talent and Guy is consistently the better singer and performer.

Go Guy!

Rosie » 11 November, 2003 9:39 PM

I live in Perth and I have to say you were wrong about Shannon fans being the mums and dads. I was standing next to a mum who loved Guy and her little boy who was about 3 or 4 who himself had an afro loved Shannon and was asking before they came out "Wheres Shannon" - I thought it was funny and told his mum I thought he would like Guy because of his hair and she said no he fell in love with Shannon and she even let him place a vote for him.

I know PLENTY of young people who think Shannon is hot and love him. I am a little annoyed that people are saying he is too old - well Cosima was only one year younger than him - you are never too old to go for your dreams - look at Calista Flockhart (Ally McBeal) she was in her 30's when she got her break.

Also the fact is that the voting lines were closed early and as such ALL results including the announcement that Guy was safe should technically be null and void and are unreliable. You say don't judge based on Sundays' performance - BUT haven't we been doing that all along - Each sunday we were asked to vote for our favourites and effectively vote the one who's performance was less than standout - to that end most weeks the audience got it right - like when Levi left and YES even when Paulini was voted off, great talent but that week both her songs were very similar - Cosima based on this rationale should have been voted out that Monday as problem or not she was the worst performer of the night.

BTW who are you to say that one demographic - the younger kids - are more important than Mums and Dads - I am a very young MUM of 33 who would buy Shannons cd over guys anyday - there has been a real 80's revival lately in music that is being picked up by all demographics and Shannon easily fits into this category - look at all the OLD rockers that are still kicking on and selling records and doing tours and just because Shannon is 27 doesn't mean to say he couldn't be around for atleast 10 years - talk about discrimination - perhaps you need to look at anit-discrimination laws.
THIS competition is about music and voice and talent and everything else and age is not a factor. Based on Sunday's performance Shannon outperformed Guy and I have heard that from a number of Guy fans' thamselves.
Having said that I wish them both well because they ar such good friends and either way both of their futures are secured.
Shannon will make it zi believe because I think Dicko is right when he said what he did about the demise of the Aussie rock voice - obviously enough of us out here still like it or Shannon wouldn't have made it as far as he has.

Karena » 12 November, 2003 1:38 AM

ks,

you are so rude....to say that Guy looks unfortunate is very wrong......on that note would you say Paulini looks unfortunate as well? the competition is not about looks..its about dreams

rcat » 12 November, 2003 12:43 PM

Both Guy and Shannon are wonderful young men who are trying to realise their dreams. I support both of them in their endeavours. However, we need to vote for the best talent- vocal ability, stage presentation, versatility, ability to touch an audience with their performances- all these attributes need to be taken into consideration. When all is said and done, it is the wonderful, amazing talent of Guy Sebastian who encompasses all these qualities. Please, please, please don't vote just for looks (although I think Guy has a beautiful uniqueness, with a smile that could light up the day) and please don't vote with a sympathy vote. And ESPECIALLY don't vote with the idea that we need a white anglo-saxon Idol. Australia is a multi-cultural melting pot, with many people previously from other countries being proud to be Australians. People who say Guy always sounds the same mustn't have the ear for music that helps them distinguish between good singing and great singing. Guy has performed outstandingly in every single rendition of every single song he has sung. Shannon has also performed well, but there have been too many times when he has strained for notes and looked just a little too laid back. Guy puts his heart and soul into every song he sings.
So,good luck boys. I wish you both well, but for the sake of Australia's chances in the World Idol competition, we need to vote for someone who can perform exceptionally in a variety of song genres, who can touch the hearts of people with his soaring renditions, and sing with the voice of true, unsurpassed talent. Come on Australia, don't be complacent. Get on the phone and vote, vote, vote for the Guy who should represent Australia in World Idol. GO GUY!!!

Neridah » 12 November, 2003 4:37 PM

Neridah you say that we need to vote for someone for world idol who can sing in a variety of genres well I have to respectfully disagree with you and say thst Guy may have a wonderful voice but he does sound the same in all his songs - he converts them all to R&B - he certainly does not sing flawlessly evertie either - people are so focussed in what he does with the sngs (ie musical acrobats) that more than once he has missed notes and keys BUT has never been called upon it. And I take exception to being told I don't have an ear for music because even in the themed shows all his songs sounded like he was singing in a church quior.
Shannon may not have the most perfect voce - but that is what I like about it - all too often music stars rely on refinement in the studio and taking out all the bad notes - I want to hear the real person and not "perfect" music all the time which is whst we tend to get with Guy, he is do great at interpreting music that he soemtimes forgets the real music in a way.
Shannon certainly has stage prescence, and is more than capable of showing versatility and has grown so much - he has only been singing for three years and can only get better - Guy has been singing all his life and isa music teacher.
I will vote for the idol based on it being called AUSTRALIAN IDOL whcih should cater to the Aussie market.
Voting for someone based on who people think would do better in World Idol is as bas as basing your vote on ssympathy.
Both are wonderful and have different styles which appeal to large sections of the Autralian audience - I don't think it is a mistake that they are the last two standing and i wish them both well.
Personally I will be voting for Shannon - he was fabulous and his rendition of "Angel" moved me more than Guy and when he belted the song out that was sheer magic.

Karena » 12 November, 2003 6:21 PM

So, Karena, you said Guy does great at interpreting music. Yet you said that he forgets the real music in a way. **Please explain!**

I used to be a church singer AND a choir director. Guy does NOT sound as a church singer. And if he does, i envy that church Guy sings in.

Lastly, no studio will turn a bad singer into a star. Studios are all about repeating phrases as many times and in as many ways, using various gear and recording techniques, as required to single out ONE instance that sounds good, then moving on to the next phrase.
Now can you imagine what can be done when you get a great singer in a studio? When Guy wins, have a listen to the single and you will know.

I wish we had both guy's version of the single in stores just to see who would to better selling it.

By the way Guy IS a recording artist and he WORKS as a recording engineer. Win or loose, I can't see a problem for this young man.

Peace,
Damir Kalajdzic

Damir Kalajdzic » 12 November, 2003 10:19 PM

Damir
I sometimes think that Guy doesn't always respect the melody and more than once I have gone eeew I think the note was way off because of his interpretation - some of the songs I had to listen to very hard to see if the song he was singing wsas infact the right one because they were sooooo different melody wise and whilst interpretation is good, sometimes there can be too much.
I do think that studios do and have turned bad singers into stars - Look at Britney Spears, her voice aint that great - and I heard Madonna sing live once and thought she was shocking. It is a matter of opinion but also image is important - heard Lisa Marie Presleys record lately - she only got to make it I believe because she is Elvis' daughter therwise she wouldn't have a hope in hell and look at all the one hit wonders - some of them have been shocking.
I do like Guy but as my mum says he has a sweet voice - i just happen to like the earthy, edgy quality in Shannons voice more.
I taped Sundays show and have watched it several times to compare the difference of the two singles and I have to say that Shannons' grabs me more than Guys' does - even staunch Guy supporters I know think Shannons' version is better than Guys'
BUT we are entitled to our differing opinions and think that both copies would sell very well but I don't think I will buy Guys' if he wins as I tend to listen to rock more than R&B which I listen to only when I am in a mellow mood, which isn't often.
I wish both boys well because I respect both of their talents and the fact that they are mates and it was only a critique of their performance and not a personal attack as I don't believe in that.
I am sure both will do very well no matter what the outcome it is just I prefer Shannons type of music to Guys' that's all.
Peace to you too
Karena

I did not realise how many tone-deaf people are out there. How could anyone say that Shannon can sing? His range is as narrow as Calista Flockhar's waistline! His version of 'Angels' was all over the place and he really struggled and he forgot the words at one stage. He is very one-dimensional and does not have one tenth of Guy's talent. Guy is talented, modest, creative and unique. He would sell records internationally, not just in country Australia.
VOTE GUY!!!!!

My following contribution is not very complimentary to persons who favor Shannon over Guy, so if you're easily offended, you might want to skip it.

To the person(s) who commented that Shannon sings Aussie and Guy doesn't ... oh puh-lease, have you noticed what passes as "Australian" Country these days! Hah! Can you get any more USofA?

Please note, just because historical Australian cultural identity has been tied to a swagman stealing sheep doesn't mean that it has to be Australia's current or future cultural identity. Cultural identity is a fluiditic phenomenom that is formed by the people who live it.

I don't steal sheep.
I don't camp by a billabong.
I use an electric kettle.

To those persons who seem to think that Shannon is more "Australian" than Guy ... take a moment to examine your thoughts.

No. Really. I mean it. ... examine your thoughts.

In fact, take more than a moment.

While doing so, try to pinpoint what feature, exactly, is it about Guy that causes you to have this impression that he is 'less' Australian?

tick tick tick...

Reasons why people would vote for Shannon:
* bigotry (it's unfortunate existance has to be acknowledged)
* the sympathy vote
* because he can work a crowd (refer to previous notations re: sympathy vote)
* because he's ocker
* because he has kids
* because more people than I would wish form first opinions based on looks rather than substance
* tone-deafness
* a liking for wooden performances.

Reasons why people would vote for Guy:
* p u r e v o c a l t a l e n t
* the depth of emotion he puts into his performance - honestly it felt like I was singing along with him.

Would I spend my "hard-earned" on buying their solo efforts?

Shannon - no. There are innumerable CDs available with better vocal stylings.

Guy - yes. In fact I like his efforts so much that, even though I'm a dedicated Atheist and all things religious generally give me the absolute shits, I'm putting serious thought into purchasing his earlier Christian releases.

Would I be interested in shelling out money for a ticket to see a live performance?

Shannon - no. If he & his band were playing at the pub on a Saturday I might drop by for a quick Kahlua or two.

Guy - ..guh..YEAH!

If Shannon is picked as the best of what's available in Australia I'll be refusing to watch the international version due to the pure shame of it.

The Daily Telegraph 14th November:

MUSIC heavyweights want Guy Sebastian crowned Australian Idol. As Sebastian and fellow finalist Shannon Noll await their fate by public vote, industry support has shifted to the Bro With the 'Fro.
"They are poles apart musically, but Guy has got a real talent," music guru "Molly" Meldrum said this week.

"They are both good for different reasons. Shannon is mainstream. He is more your Big Brother thing. He has that kind of appeal. Guy is a very good singer."

Nova FM music director Estelle Paterson, Renee Geyer and singing coach David Jaanz, agree on Sebastian.

"I think Guy should win," Geyer said.

"He is a musician, he has his head screwed on straight and knows what he is doing."

Geyer said Paulini Curuenavuli, ousted three weeks ago, should have been a grand finalist.

Jaanz, who has taught Delta Goodrem, Tina Arena, Holly Valance and US star Anastasia, supports Sebastian.

"Shannon is a very good rock singer, but Guy is a freak," said Jaanz.

Paterson says Nova 100 FM will play Sebastian "no matter what".

"Guy has a great voice, he knows what he is doing and he is flat out talented," she said.

Shannon wins vocal support of singing expert
By Tony Davis
November 15, 2003

Sydney Morning Herald

The Conservatorium's Michael Halliwell gives
Shannon Noll's voice his vote.
Photo: Jon Reid

Shannon has a better voice than Guy or Cosima, but none can match
Paulini, the Fijian-born Sydneysider who was the first of the
Australian Idol final four to be sent packing.

That's the considered opinion of Michael Halliwell, the head of vocal
studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Dr Halliwell will start auditioning 150 potential singing students
next week as part of his role at the "Con". But he agreed to start
the process early by listening to the Australian Idol four, and
evaluating the technical quality of their voices for the Herald.

Dr Halliwell, 50, is a South African-born, London-trained former
opera singer who has sat through thousands of auditions to uncover
vocal potential.

He had not seen the hit television show before yesterday when he sat
in his sound-proof office and worked his way through studio
recordings and live television performances of Guy Sebastian, Shannon
Noll, Cosima De Vito and Pauline "Paulini" Curuenavuli .

So has the show, as claimed, unearthed real talent?

In general yes, says Dr Halliwell, though his opinion of hot
favourite Guy would seem to run against popular opinion. "Shannon's
is probably a voice with more range and more dynamic variation and
colour variation," he said.

"I would classify Shannon's voice from a classical point of view as a
light lyric tenor, with a nice easy extension to the top. I think he
uses it pretty intelligently, carefully. He is the most comfortable
vocally of the four in terms of what he is singing And I think it's a
good, strong voice."

Dr Halliwell feels Shannon could respond well to classical training,
even though the technique is completely different. "Mozart maybe,
nothing too heavy, no big dramatic operas."

He considers Guy's sound pretty, but limited. "It's almost like a
speaking way of singing, it's not really using the full vocal
mechanism."

Dr Halliwell agrees that voice quality and star quality are not
always the same thing, and that judging the technical quality of
voices can depend on repertoire.

But he rates Paulini above Shannon. "Her voice has areas where I
think it makes it a little more interesting than his. Of all the four
singers she has the widest range of colour.

"It's a voice with a lot of substance, a strong voice."

Although he was taken with Cosima's presentation and "pizzaz", Dr
Halliwell found her voice "fairly limited in sound".

If Shannon were to turn up at the Con for auditions after next
Wednesday's final episode of Australian Idol would Dr Halliwell be
interested?

"Certainly, we have students that audition by singing popular songs.
We get a lot of potential in voices - what is in a voice that hasn't
yet come out. For me [Shannon] shows a lot of potential in the voice
and he'll probably take it a lot further."

But if he could choose just one? "Paulini."

Such a sterile criticism. There's so much more to singing then tonal
range. Who's got the range? Shannon, if you count those of-the-toilet-
seat straining sounds.

Who's a better singer? Guy. End of story.

OK, I'll try not to flame Australian "experts". It won't be easy
though.

For those here who don't know me (I'm a night bird) I AM a music
expert, holding two music degrees and a slew of public performances
all around Europe. I have 17 years worth of music education,
including four years in Australia.

Shannon does not stand a chance of being anything else but a rock
singer. Someone gere said he could be an operatic singer in five (5)
years or so. I can only say it takes over TEN (10) years to achieve
that, and he'd have to have a perfectly CLEAN voice to start with.
Shannon's raspy voice is great for rock, provided he puts a LOT of
effort into everyday practice and listening to other rock singers. He
proved he CAN grow as he gave his first half-decent performance in
the finals.

Now i am not trying to establish authority over those who disagree. I
am just expressing my opinion as an old hand in music business. You
can bag me, but I'll only accept arguments from someone who has
KNOWLEDGE of music, not just oppinions based on personal tastes.

Peace,
Damir Kalajdzic

Guy is just as Australian as the next person. Whats with all this 'Shannon is more australian' can sumone plz give me the defintion of what that means? No I didnt think you could, why? Because as soon as you open your mouth you know yourself that your being highly prejudice. I live in the surburbs, my parents dont drive a truck and *omg* I am from ITALIAN DESCENT! So, that means..i musnt fit the bill of being 'Australian' enough! I thought this country was one that prides itself on multi-culturalism! GO GUY!

Guy ONLY sings R&B???

Ok soo PLEASE tell me what catergory "Climb Every Mountain" goes into?

Coz that was NOT R&B

teegs » 16 November, 2003 11:12 AM

Damir,

Your opinion is sad and subjective.

Shannon is vocally more superior than Guy. This, does not, however guarantee that Shannon will win.

This competition is not about vocal superiority.

MikeH

MikeH » 16 November, 2003 11:33 AM

Hi,
I am a Guy supporter too. Based on performance , talents & potentials alone, Guy should win hands down. In an ideal world with fair-minded, unbiased population, Guy should become the Australian Idol on Wednesday 19th November 2003. The music Industry and their Professionals know Guy is the One. My heart hopes this is the scenario but it's up to all Australia to decide who will become one. My head says Shannon will win because traditionally, Australians in general tend to support the underdog, the Aussie battler which is why the Shannon camp is using this Australian Psychic to their advantage in the media.
This is no longer just a singing contest. More than that, it has become a testament to the state of multiculturalism Vs tribalism of a nation. Let's hope Australia has matured into a nation whose peoples believe in and practise fairness and justice for all based on individual attributes regardless of race and creed. Australia, this is your call. Choose wisely.

May the best " Guy" win !!!

i listen to all kinds of music and i cant believe people actually think shannon sings better than guy ... i dont think either of them are good looking so i base it on talent and im sorry but i feel sorry for those who back shannon over guy. i think congrats to both of them for getting as far but shannon is a rock singer, thats all.
Go guy!

GO GUY. YOU DESERVE TO WIN.

Kate » 16 November, 2003 3:36 PM

Shannon couldn't hit any of the high notes in Angels! I can't believea all of you! You're all voting for Shannon because of SYMPATHY! Don't be so gullible!

Guy is the real winner! Anyone can see that, and even all the heavyweight musicians in Australia are saying that! Btw, that Halliwell expert said WITH THE RIGHT TRAINING Shannon has a good classical voice - classical my ass! This is a pop idol competition.

Oh and when did Jimmy Barnes go international anyway? Shannon is so stiff, it's like he's a tree.

Jake » 16 November, 2003 3:39 PM

From day one I have been a Guy supporter. His voice is amazing. I'm trying to fathom how so many people on this site can argue that Shannon has a greater vocal talent.

Do you people not have ears?!? Do you not hear the wrong notes? Shannon sings about 70% of a song ("Angels Brought Me Here" or "Please Forgive Me" are perfect examples) really well. He has a great "Aussie" sound to his voice, and a good presence on stage. The problem is in the other 30%, where he is hitting wrong notes (sending shivers down my spine for all the wrong reasons!), standing still on stage, and forgetting lyrics.

If Shannon was faultless in his performances, then I would be a much bigger fan, but can you imagine sitting through a 2 hour concert of all the above faults? What he does, he does well, but you can't ignore his (many) performance problems.

On the other side of the microphone, Guy's voice is near faultless. The only notes I've heard him miss are when he is in the climax of a song, and he is going for broke. (and then its only been a couple of times throughout the entire series, and he didn't miss them by much, AND he adjusted mid-note to the proper pitch). Can you imagine his voice in studio form when he can redo a song to ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!

He is professional in his approach to music. He is creative, he writes his own songs, plays his own instruments, arranges his own pieces. Personally, I really appriciate his personality and his sense of humour (like his Lenny Kravitz look), and then fact that he has fun when he's performing and doesn't take himself too seriously.

Do you people classify "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" as R'n'B??? That was my all time favorite moment in the entire series, and I don't have any Boyz II Men albums or Craig David! How can you people be saying that he can only sing R'n'B when he has clearly demonstrated a repetoir of many styles. ("Hit the Road Jack"?!!!???)

In the ENTIRE SERIES, Guy is the only person that I would pay money to watch live, and definately the only person who I would buy an album from.

For these reasons, I will be voting for Shannon.

:)

No thats not a typo. "Angels Brought Me Here" made up my mind. Guy performed it faultlessly, and vocally he was fantastic. Its just a crap song. (don't even get me started on Shannon's rendition)

I don't want to see someone as obviously talented as Guy "trapped" into a record contract where he has to sing their songs (pick a CD from 60-odd "pre-selected" songs and record it in an EXTREMELY small amount of time!), perform at "their" venues, and give "his earnings" to the Australian Idol revenue factory! Shannon and Guy are now both locked in a 12 month contract with BMG no matter what as part of the entree process to Australian Idol, its just that the winner will be having to do all the "Australian Idol" duties. That also means the the runner up can't run off to Sony and have them make money off BMG and channel 10's show.

This is my ideal outcome.

Shannon wins Australian Idol. He can go off and record their CD, represent australia, hopefully increase his vocal ability, and then get forgotten by the Australian public by the time Big Brother 7 comes around.

Guy meanwhile, picks up a proper rocord contract from BMG where his earnings don't have to pay for a TV series, spends the next 6 months composing a CD of his own many song ideas (maybe with a few reworked covers in there to keep the punters happy), and then realeses an amazing CD that is HIS OWN WORK!!!!! He then reaps the rewards of his own talent and sets himself up for a rewarding career, where he is NOT piggybacking on the TV show, and he can become successful on his own merits.

Then I'll be happy. Guy is too talented to waste on a happy-go-lucky reality TV public who don't appriciate his amazing gift.

Cheers,
Craig

Craig » 16 November, 2003 3:51 PM

But Craig, won't he be trapped into that 12 month contract whether he wins or loses? Therefore wouldn't it be better if he won - he'd get the higher profile in the short term, the wider Australian public won't be given much of a chance to forget his face.

That 12 month contract for every finalist sucks. But then, if they did'nt have that I suppose the company could end up with a situation where one of the runners up negotiates a better deal with a different company then that which the winner 'won' as part of the competition.

Either way, he seems like such a nice, got-his-head-in-the-right-place kind of fella that I'd hate to see his personality suffer due to having to deal with the music industry execs too early in his development.

Erica » 16 November, 2003 4:52 PM

He's in a current contract with BMG. So that stops him from getting signed by, say, Sony. But BMG could renegotiate his current contract with them (therefore he won't have to deal with all the Australian Idol stuff) and then he can make his own record. Thats the whole point, so that he isn't stifled by the linear path that comes with being an Idol. (look at the UK. The guy who got second released an album and it outsold the winner! ....at least, thats what I heard from a friend of a friend of a cousin's sisters room mate...)

Cheers,
Craig

Craig » 16 November, 2003 4:59 PM

It's so disappointing to see so many biased and unfair articles in the Daily Telegraph. The Australian Idol contest may be influenced by unfair favoritism in the media.
I've read so many articles just recently in TDT that just go on and on about Shannon Noll's life on the farm, his kids, the drought, the Dusty own of Condoblin.ect.
Is this some kind of joke or popularity contest? Shannon has been labeled the 'hard working bloke' from rural Australia whereas there has been not one article that has acknowledged Guy's extreme talent. Instead TDT has labeled Guy the more 'flighty, flashy' contestant with a laid back life.
This is so biased, untrue and unfair! Guy seems just as dedicated to hard work as any other Australian. He was, at one stage, a Medical Radiation student, a Sound Engineer and a Vocalist/Piano teacher all at the same time! Now of course he specializes in the latter two.
Guy seems like a very talented and hard working bloke to me who is just as ‘Aussie’ as Shannon. I can’t believe that many people are claiming that Guy isn’t Australian. If Guy isn’t Australian then the only ‘true blue Aussies are Australian Aboriginals’. I hope that voters for Australian Idol contestants will not vote for the contestant with the more identifiable Australian background.
I really hope that Guy will win Australian Idol because he has the independent talent that Australia's been waiting for.
It will be a great shame if Guy does not win and I’m sure many people would feel ashamed and disappointed about the voting. Remember Guy did have a nasty flu yet he still managed to pull off two great songs on Sunday (9/11.) It is time to restore some credibility to the voting, so please get behind Guy Sebastian now that voting lines are open Australia!
Guy can sing a vast array of songs from different genres… NOT JUST R’N’B
Shannon is a great guy who does have a good voice, but his talent cannot compare to Guy Sebastian's extreme talent. Guy will not only do well in Australia, but he would be serious competition to the very best international talent. Come on Australians and get behind Guy because he's just "too good to be true"!

chloe » 17 November, 2003 3:05 PM

Damn I wish Guy was gay because he's so good I'd do him right now!hehehe (Guy isn't gay as he proved with a lie detector test)
everyone that thinks shannon has a better voice than Guy has ear plugs in! It makes me laugh when i hear people raving on about Shannon!..i just think 'your joking'. Australia will be the laughing stock of the world if we send Shannon off to World Idol. Other countries will be in disbeleif if they ever see that we voted for Shannon instead of Guy. Sometimes I think that Guy would have a better chance of winning a contest like this if he were living in England or America, because when I hear people say that Guy is NOT Australian it just makes me shake my head in disbeleif and disgust!
I'll be voting for one of the most talented young vocalist/dancer/musician/arranger I've seen in a long time! Of course I'm voting for Guy! what...do you think I'm seriously ignorant enough to vote for Shannon?

Curtis thinks Guy Rocks! » 17 November, 2003 3:17 PM

We need to remember that this is basically a singing contest. This is about someone who can represent Australia on the international stage. As nice as Shannon is, Guy is by far the more superior singer, mover, songwriter, arranger and musician. And if Shannon wins because every newspaper, current affair TV show and magazine is giving us his hard luck life story, then this has become a joke of a contest. We are voting on talent!!!!!
Firstly, the dickhead who wrote that Guy is not Australian is a narrow-minded racist who needs a life. Although Shannon is good looking, funny and a decent singer, Guy is by far the more talented. He has it all - funky looks, musical ability, creativity, humour, niceness and a heavensent vocal ability. Everyone knows this... so now it's up to us to vote. By the way, does anyone know how I can get a copy of all the songs Guy has sung so far on 'Idol'? VOTE FOR GUY!!!

Are Shannon supporters deaf or what? » 17 November, 2003 3:20 PM

Guy Sebastian is Australian! (to the moron who said he isn’t). If Guy Sebastian isn’t Australian then that means that the only people who are Australian are Australian Aboriginals!
GO GUY...YOU ARE AMAZING!
by the way Guy sings more than just RnB (to those that say he's limited) and what the hell? Shannon is limited with his voice and genres, not GUY.
Guy is FAR FROM limited with his vocal abilities.
GUY IS GONNA CONQUER THE WORLD MUSIC CHARTS!

GUY ROCKS! » 17 November, 2003 3:26 PM

What a disgrace to say that Guy Sebastian is not Australian! My family descends from England and Ireland. Most of my relatives are voting for Shannon. When I ask them why they vote for Shannon they say that "he's cute and more Australian than Guy Sebastian". Well I think they are silly and blind to the fact that Guy Sebastian is AMAZING! I live in an area where everyone is voting for Shannon, but I'll tell u what...they don't know what talent is! to all the Guy supporters out there, U HAVE TO VOTE HEAPS OF TIMES! you have no idea how crazy the Shannon supporters are. I really hope Guy wins because he's got an outstanding attitude and an outstanding talent! Naomi- Piyaratna(Nadine Piyara)..your article on the Daily Telegraph Website(about Guy) is outstanding! I applaude you for writing such a great letter!
come on Australians don't be complacent and let this thing slide! VOTE FOR GUY NOW!!!!

Tammy thinks GUY SHOULD WIN » 17 November, 2003 3:26 PM

Guy rules!!!!
I think Guy is the greatest!!! Just because he wasn't born in Australia doesn't mean he isn't Australian!!I was born in Egypt and came here 10 year ago....but I am Australian now!!!
I love you Guy!!! I have the planet shakers album, 'My King' is your song!!!! It’s the best!!!!!!
love Taleiah

Taleiah » 17 November, 2003 3:29 PM

If Guy doesn't win Ausralian Idol then the whole competition is a waste!
what we need is Guy Sebastian to represent Australia...not a country complainer(shannon) who thinks he has the hardest life in the world and never gives any credit to Guy Sebastian.
Supporters of Shannon in Condoblin are crying out that there is not enough money to feed Shannon's family, yet, for some strange reason, there was enough money to give school children in Condoblin more than $9000 just to vote for Shannon. People in Condoblin are each putting in $30 every week to vote for Shannon. Why doesn't all this money go towards feeding Shannon's family or at least drought releif?
I hope that people who understand what exceptional talent is will vote for Guy. And to the d**k head who said that Guy is not Australian, I'll just say this: NO ONE in this country is a 'true blue Aussie' unless they are full Aboriginal or Torres Sraight Islander. People who claim that Guy is not Australian are probably to thick headed and brainwashed to understand this!
What Naomi Piyaratna has said is so true...I saw her article(as Nadine Piyara) on the Daily Telegraph feedback website and it is brilliant!
Congratulations to Guy for being a stand out performer with a wonderful attitude! Just as Cloe Fernando said; 'You already are the Australian Idol to me!

Brian Hadfield » 17 November, 2003 3:30 PM

This is Naomi Piyaratna's original letter. A lot of people have copied it and added their own comments and it's circulating around but I found the original on the Daily Telegraph feedback site. This letter is straight to the point and brilliant too! I'd like to get some of her views on this site! Naomi if u're out there please help us!
anyway here it is;

I hope that voters for Australian Idol contestants will not vote for the contestant with the more identifiable Australian background. Hopefully Guy Sebastian’s extreme talent will not be ignored when Australia votes for the last time. Guy has proven that he is a wonderful person and an outstanding vocalist/musician and dancer. He's the complete package and he always makes a song his own. Many newspapers have given unfair media attention to Shannon because he's a father from rural Australia. Shannon’s been labeled the 'Hard working Aussie bloke' whereas Guy is being named the 'flighty/flashy' contestant who has a 'laid back life'. This is so biased, untrue and unfair! Guy seems just as dedicated to hard work as any other Australian. He was, at one stage, a Medical Radiation student, a Sound Engineer and a Vocalist/Piano teacher all at the same time! Now of course he specializes in the latter two. He seems like a pretty hard working bloke to me who is just as ‘Aussie’ as Shannon. I really hope that Guy will win Australian Idol because he has the independent talent that Australia's been waiting for. It will be a great shame if Guy does not win and I’m sure many people would feel ashamed and disappointed about the voting. It is time to restore some credibility to the voting, so please get behind Guy Sebastian when voting lines open Australia! Shannon is a great guy who does have a good voice, but his talent cannot compare to Guy Sebastian's extreme talent. Guy will not only do well in Australia, but he would be serious competition to the very best international talent. Come on Australia and get behind Guy because he's just "to good to be true"!

» 17 November, 2003 3:34 PM

i have loved guy through out the whole time and have been racking my phone bill up high with votes. i just hope that australia remember all the great performances guy has done and not be sucked in to shannons 'hard life' stories!!
we dont know if guy has finacial stability either. today in perth shannon told the crowd that his fiance is dying for the money to start rolling in! is that what we really want ! an idol who is only interested in the $ ? OR guy who puts all his might into his songs? vote guy the true australian idol!!
Guy Sebastian is sinply amazing. People are always going to have negative things to say about someone who is more successful than they are, which is where all the "non australian" and "he can't sing" comes from. But it is obvious that he can sing better than anyone else in the competition, just ask the other contestants. He is the total package and he deserves to win. To those who say he has no range in his voice and can't get high notes, maybe you should watch his performances again. Don't hate on people who are talented just because you are jealous. Go Guy, you are the best by far.

u can't hide the truth of real talent! » 17 November, 2003 3:36 PM

Hey everyone - GUY IS OUR AUSTRALIAN IDOL! Australia is a multicultural society and Guy represents this. What a talented boy, an amazing singer, good mover - all that and extremely cute too.
He's a sweet, generous young man who acknowledges Shannon's talent and says he would be happy for Shannon if he won Idol. Whereas Shannon never mentions Guy's talents and only focuses on himself winning.
FANS, don't get complacent! Don't think - "well, he performed so well he's bound to win" - this Sunday you need to MAKE SURE he wins - VOTE 'FRO

GUY is the best by far! » 17 November, 2003 3:37 PM

this is another one of NAomi Piyaratna's letter to the editor. It's pretty good too! here it is:

Shame on The Daily Telegraph and other newspapers for the unfair and heavily biased articles dedicated to the 'hard working Aussie bloke' Shannon Noll.
Is this some kind of joke or a popularity contest!? It's got to the point where it is clear that The Daily Telegraph really wants Shannon to win. I have not seen one article dedicated to Guy Sebastian, neither have I read at least some descent recognition of Guy Sebastian' extraordinary talent as an arranger/vocalist/musician and dancer.
Guy seems just as nice a bloke as Shannon and from the facts it is evident that Guy is a very dedicated and hard-working young man.
When I vote, I will be voting for the contestant that I believe can represent Australia anywhere in the world and be a great competition to the very best international talent. I will be voting for an outstanding performer with an outstanding attitude. I won't be voting for the contestant with the more recognizable Australian background.
Shannon Noll has a good voice, but it is all too clear who the standout talent is. Even on Sunday night when Guy was still fighting a nasty flu he managed to perform brilliantly! Who will ever forget Guy’s unforgettable performance of ‘Climb Every Mountain’ and ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’?
I will be voting for Guy Sebastian because he is just ‘too good to be true’!

MAY THE BEST "GUY" WIN!

my favourite "GUY" » 17 November, 2003 3:55 PM

I think its great that so many people are so excited by Australian Idol. I think both finalists have heaps to offer. I think both have uniques strengths. As Dicko said, its great that two vastly different performers could make it.

Being a child of the 80s and growing up with Cold Chisel, Oils, H&C, I like Shannon more.I know he can't hit the high notes like Guy can. I just like him better.

Now before you tell me that my taste is too commercial, dated, predictable and cliched I will agree with you. But I also like bands like Powder Finger and Taxi Ride- modern Australian bands with an original sound in with a great tradition based in those classic acts of the 1980s. Powderfinger won ARIA for best Album. Whose going to appeal to that audience?

So, please please please, lay off with racist, xenophobic conspiracy theories. If the Australian Idol is a farmer in the middle of nowhere or of Fijian or Sri Lankan stock then its says great things about this country.

Oh,and by the way- Its a talent quest. Its a game. Just imagine Johnny Young, Bert Newton or Darryl Somers in the background. If ya get too worked up I'll send Red Symonds around to ring the gong on ya !Yes there are great opportunities for the winner but will all be over on Thursday.

Go the Wallabies ! ( Now that is real life or death stuff !)

Paul » 17 November, 2003 4:29 PM

Go the wallabies, go Sri Lanka and GO THE FRO! I respect everyones veiws by the way...i just think Guy has a lot of talent. I wanna take my hat off to paul for being respectable and decent in his comments! you like shannon, i like Guy, but hey they9Guy and Shannon)are both great people!

GO THE FRO!!!!! » 17 November, 2003 6:27 PM

Haven't heard them sing yet (In NZ... have to wait) I think its safe to say that Guy will win, only because he's different. He has 'marketable qualities' that Shannon doesn't... i.e the look.

Shannon is my pick but I might as well pick my nose for the good it will do...

Go Shannon !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

andrew » 18 November, 2003 8:09 PM

I still think it should be a Paulini vs Guy final, if the competition was based on pure talent alone.

I must say, I was quite disappointed with Shannon's "Working Class Man". As a Guy supporter, I was very impressed by Shannon's song choice, but I thought he could have played it up so much more, with more action and movement. It took abotu half the amount of time of Guy singing "Crazy In Love" for the crowd to go nuts, even though it was a crappy song choice, compared to the response Shannon got for "Working Class Man".

To those who say that Shannon can sing everything but R&B...You're right - he can sing it...but he can't sing it well, nor can he sell it. I have been completely unmoved by most of his performances to date.

To those who say that Guy can ONLY sing R&B - I think you've only paid attention to the R&B edition of Idol...he has excelled in EVERY week - and was the judges' top choice 4 weeks running. I think that in itself says who the top performer is.

People whinge about Australian's being represented and understood as being ute driving, flannel shirt wearing outback farmers (for example, on the Simpsons!)...Shannon representing Australia at World Idol is going to engrave that stereotype even further into the minds of those worldwides - and it would also be a pity, as the world won't get to see the best that Australia has to offer.

Go Guy!

» 19 November, 2003 10:54 AM

I think Guy's comments on Rove Live sum it up - when asked why he should win, he said "I love music". Everytime Shannon is asked why he entered the competition, he says something about the money.

Yeah, I'm sure he's got financial problems, but we're not voting for who wants to be a charity case. We're voting for talent and passion for what they are doing, and I think there's only one person who fulfils that - and taht's Guy

» 19 November, 2003 11:01 AM

i think guy should win cause he is so awesome at singing and he has a voice that most males would want and hes got good looks for a popstar and he speaks well to audiences

kelly » 19 November, 2003 3:12 PM

Shannon was so much better than guy. I don't know wat people see in guy his fans just like his fro.
How stupid. SHANNON JUST HAS THE LOT.

Emma » 19 November, 2003 4:05 PM

I don't just like Guy for his afro. The afro is coincidental. It's only because it's such an identifiably visual aspect of Guy that it has become the rallying call of his supporters. More importantly it shows he's not afraid to be himself because, let's face it, who on earth would seriously have an afro to be 'in'.

I like Guy for his voice (more enjoyable than Shannon's) and his passion for the music (a lot more evident than Shannon's). That he seems to be a nice fella with his head on straight is a bonus.

so I'll send this one right backatcha Emma...

...people only like Shannon for his looks...

:0P

Some of these comments are so funny! I am SO very proud that it is Guy who will be representing Australia in World Idol. There was no better contender than him. He is amazing talent, brimming with life, extraordinary voice and groovy performer, he knows how to move around the stage and work the crowd, he makes those watching him wanna get up and dance and sing with him. The fact that he's a music teacher and has lots of experience performing in front of big crowds (at his church) hopefully will make him strong at the World Idol. His humble, sincere and genuine manner is so adorable. I think he's an awesome talent who has and will continue to make Australia very proud - well done Guy, you funky spunk! I also take my hat off to Cosima, Paulini and Axle...you guys are a bundle of joy to watch and listen.

Congratulations Guy » 20 November, 2003 2:53 AM

Shell » 20 November, 2003 6:16 AM

For me, the greatest moment of last night was when Shannon and Guy were walking along the red carpet. Shannon said a few hellos along the way and then got to the top of the stairs. Guy was signing autographs (!) despite Andrew G calling him to come up because they were on tele! He was making time for THE FANS who love him, and trying to give some time to as many of them as he could.

Guy is an ABSOLUTE professional in his work. Despite my above post (Nov. 16?), I am so happy that Guy won, because he is going to kick the crap out of World Idol. I only hope that he doesn't get stuck with a shit album and then get branded with it for his career. (because then it might be a short one). I want to hear the Guy music...his own songs the way he wants them to be heard. (i.e. not rushed like this album is going to be...)

The DEFINING DIFFERENCE between Guy and previous 'Popstars' (such as the solo guy from the last popstars) is that Guy actually HAS TALENT! In a strictly musical sense, the best talent in Australia has acknowledged Guy as being a phenomonal performer...how many said that about the popstars? They were pretty little dolls up on stage, with the vocal range of Milsy.

Guy has won this competition (rightly...thank you Australia) on his talent ALONE! He has won this because he is an amazing singer. Not because of his looks, his dancing moves, or his 'Aussi' image. Not because he needed the money, or all the 14yr old girls used up their credits to vote for him. Guy's voice won Australian Idol, and that restores my faith in the Aussi public.

Wow- I have watched Guy's "Angels Brought Me Here" video clip on his website so many times since last night- and every time I am completely enraptured. I cannot understand how anyone could possibly say he did not deserve to win, or make unkind references to his appearance. Guy; you are one of the most beautiful people I have ever seen. Your voice is one of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard. You radiate a beautiful presence when you sing that reaches straight into the heart. (Is there anyone else out there who has been so moved by Guy's rendition of "Angels" that they almost want to cry?) I truly believe Guy is such a brilliant role model to young Australians. Apart from Delta Goodrem, our other young Aussie role models in the music industry are too busy pumping out trashy, sleazy, no talent music videos with no thought for the messages or images they are sending to our young kids.
Well done, Guy Sebastian!! You are a young man to be proud of. Hold your head up high. You have already done Australia proud. I hope all your dreams do come true.

Although I am a shannon fan... I have to say well done Guy.

They both have great talents in different area's.

Guys range and his musical talents.

and Shannons able to many different genres and does interviews a lot better then guy.

I Think they both deserved to win, and I felt sorry for shannon.
But I think in the long run Shannon will last longer then Guy, just look how good garath gates is :D (CUTIE!!!)

and when people say that guy has the whole deal, Does that mean they think his hot? Becuase if there was one person with the whole deal it would be shannon...
~can sing
~looks
~great talker
~ and he seems like the normal Aussie bloke

And to the people that say that only old people go for shannon... thats soo wrong, I know a lot of teens that love shannon more then guy.

But well done to them both... they have a lot of courage and I hope BOTH there dreams come true.

Guy is by far the better singer. Full stop. Shannon can't sing! Who knows how he managed to get to the final - all you "Aussies" must have voted for it.

This is a SINGING/PERFORMING competition - not an ocker, good-bloke, wanker competition. You people are stupid. It never ceases to amaze me the depths of imbecilism I see.

Guy Sebastian, WOW!!
He is an amazing talent with a voice truly “Heaven sent”. Guy is such a beautiful person all over. He is caring, modest, spiritual, loving, joyous … and the list goes on. It really makes me proud to see such a wonderful young man represent Australia in the world idol competition. His religious beliefs are what make him who he is; they are what got him to where he is now, and hopefully where he will be in the future. I think it’s great to see him stand up publicly about the topic of his Christian beliefs.
I hope this humble person stays the way he is and doesn’t change a thing.
Guy is about to face a world he has never seen before and it is this plastic world that can change Guy. I hope this Australian Idol competition just makes him stronger throughout his journey and his faith remains the same. In 10 years time I want to see the Guy I saw on Australian Idol. (A role model to all young Australians) What do you peeps think?

God Bless you and your family Guy Sebastian

Adz » 24 November, 2003 10:33 PM

Australia, well done. You have finally accepted that every citizen of Australia, regardless of background, has the right & is good enough to represent Australia as a proud Australian. This is a defining moment in the history of this young country, a turning point to be remembered in years to come. I am so proud of you Australia.

Congratulations Guy! May your ideals & principles in life be a shining beacon to all those who idolise you. Be bold, be strong & be couragious as you embark on the journey of your dream that will need all the love you can give, everyday of your life ,for as long as you live.

I think all the people who voted for Shannon
need to step back into reality Guy has a heaps better voice at least he doesnt sound whinny like he is crying out in pain
Go the fro,Guy rocks
Guy would sell alot more records than Shannon
ever would his single Angels Brought Me Here
shows you what a beautiful voice he has and he will reach number
As for you Darren you wouldn't know what real talent was if it came and bit you on the ass so get a life you loser....
Guy is more versatile at least he sings different types of songs as for Shannon he just goes for the country style cause that's all he feels comfortable with, he should try singing something different and his version of Bryan Adams' Please Forgive Me was ok but i think he could have done better i was very disappointed as it is one of my favourite Adams songs.

kylie » 25 November, 2003 8:38 PM

I think when it comes to absolute talent guys got it all but as an aussie shannon is just that ... an aussie i think the only reason shannon made it that far is because he is a true blue aussie ny dad seems to think that all of the black performers were voted out first but i think his theory of " musical racism" is totally whack rebbecca hadn't performed very well and probably needed to go home for her boy's i think that was the main thing on her mind, Levi had some good performances but sometimes sang a little off key, Paulini on the other hand was absolutely amazing her voice was just awesome and her p[erformances were spot on every time, who knows maybe it was musical racism that's for you to discern
