Australian Idol - A Message from Cosima

Keep up to date with season two of Australian Idol at Australian Idol Blog.

After all the messages left on the previous post, many of which personally attack Cosima, I think it is only fair that Cosima have a right to reply to her critiques on this blog.

The following is a message from a friend (ex boss) of Cosima who left a message on Cosima's behalf on my previous post sometime today.

I have just spoken to Cosima on her decision to withdraw from
Australian Idol and she has asked me to let you know that she is
humbled by your support, did not make her decision lightly (she
describes it as the "hardest thing I have ever had to do") and wants
you to know that she will be back "for you"

The decision was made just before the show. It was her decision to
withdraw following medical advice. The decision as to when and how the
announcement was made, was made by the Channel Ten producers. Cosima
had no say in that.

She also said that the Producers said the announcemnt of who was going
to the Opera House (Guy) was in no particular order. She also does NOT
know how the votes went; whether it was she or Shanon or Guy who
polled the most votes. She said she will never know. Nobody will know.

Cosima is painfully aware that you voted up big this week to get her
through. She wants you to know that she made her decision as early as
she could, which was just before the show began. She is aware that
many people would have overspent this week and she overwhelmingly
appreciates that unprecedented level of support.

Cosima will not be on Rove tonight and will not be giving interviews
to any media outlet at least for the duration of the competition. Idol
Publicist, Steven Murphy, is answering all media enquiries.

After the show last night, she made a statement to the Idol cameras
which will be broadcast on Inside Idol.

Her plan now is to rest and allow her voice to recover.

If I can add my own thoughts here, I believe her decision to withdraw
prior to the show was a courageous one. She could have waited until
the results of the voting were known but if there was a chance that
she was voted in ahead of either Guy or Shannon, that would have taken
the gloss of those guys' achievement. For them it would have been a
hollow victory.

I know Cosima quite well as she workd for me for over a year. I know
how much this competition meant to her and her prospects of
establishing a recording career. I also know that when she starts
something she likes to finish it. Only a couple of weeks ago she said
to me that she was determined to battle it out to the end because she
owed it to herself and the fans who had supported her. I feel
absolutely certain that she would have continued had she been able.

To have continued singing at the level required with a throat
condition could possbly have resulted in permanent damage. I don't
believe any of us would want to see that happen.

As for the future, the immediate objective is for her voice to
recover. It should not take long. A few weeks of proper rest, no
singing, little talking, should do the trick.

After that I'm confident that we will see the re-emergence of a
reinvigourated, rested singing sensation that we know she is.

What can we do? As fans and friends, we should respect her decision
knowing that it was in the best interests of everybody; Guy and
Shannon, BMG, Channel Ten and us, her loyal fans.

There is no way that Cosima will abandon us. There is no way that she
will take our support for granted. As Shaun said, fans and friends
stick with their artist through thick and thin.

I hope that we prove ourselves to be true fans and friends.

Come on everyone get real and open your eyes! We do not doubt that Cosima was having a problem..she has had it for a while now. The issue is why leave it till now and why did she not make her pathetic little speech and cry her little crocodile tears when all three were standing there because she was given a choice to change her mind up till the last minute and probably thought she would be first to get through....she was a conniving little so and so right from the beginning and what she did to the other contestants especially Shannon was despicable to say the least. She just could not handle the fact that she stuffed up on Sunday and the fact that all WA were behind her and offering free phone calls she should have been way way in front of the others but not so, so she copped out. Good luck you sneaky, conniving B@#$% I'm sure you'll go far with that attitude.

Wow. Just...wow. Not being a fan of the show (I don't even live in Australia) it's impossible for me to even begin to fathom this...the amount of passion, rage and hate. And it's directed at...what? A TV SHOW. Participants in a TV show. Not some burgler who robbed your house, not a best friend who seduced your mate. A singer on a TV show.

I just don't get it.

Jonathan » 4 November, 2003 11:54 PM

Poor are those who can say a bad word about Cos.

As a singer (with a degree in music) and having the same problem as our beloved Cosima does, I know just how much energy it takes to sing on Cosima's level when you find it hard to speak. Cos did it amazingly well for weeks.

In fact, Cosima De Vito kept getting better and better, even though her voice did just the oposite. Now that demands R.E.S.P.E.C.T. (Cos as a president... Yes Dicko, quite imaginable!).

If you have any doubts in her abilities, open Kazaa and download her interpretation of "when the War is Over". If that does not take your breath away, you are not qualified to write comments here. Or not refined enough. Or deaf. Or...

Cosima, you are the Voice, the Heart and the Soul of the competition. So cheer up, take a well deserved break and then kick back. Kick hard, girl. We know you will.

WHo cares about Cosima, she's last weeks news. I'm sick and tired about all the hoopla around her decision. Obviously she couldn't cut it. Now i know its not her fault, her voice failed her, perhaps because of the heavy work schedule, but the other contestants have been under the same stresses as her and they're still hangin on. Survival of the fittest as they say. So i think its important for people to focus on whats important now and that's Shannon and Guy....

They are both talented guys vocally, but Shannon is a spunk and i for one am going to vote for him..

We're here for you Shannon. Don't worry about whats happened, my school friends and i are behind you 100%...

Go Shannon!!

Louise » 5 November, 2003 1:22 PM

Don't talk that way about TV! I don't really care about the controversy. I think it only encourages them (TV people) to manufacture more of it. Of one thing I'm sure: no-one has the full story, and I suspect no-one wants it.

My two cents: Guy has to win it - he's definitely got something. And I should know I've been judging singing talent for at least five weeks now. Notice all the experts that have appeared? I mean really, pop-music is more about marketing than talent. If you can generate publicity, you'll go far! Your music just might suck? Who was that latest pop sensation again? They keep changing it's so hard to keep up.

Luke » 5 November, 2003 2:51 PM

Its pathetic how some of you people go around and talk about people like they are nothing. Put yourself in Cosima's position and ask yourself how you would react? She did what she did and considering the circumstances she had no other choice, this is why.

1. Cosima saw a dr that arvo about her voice because obviously there was something wrong Sunday. She was told that if she continued it could and most likely would ruin her voice.

2.She told the producers of AI BEFORE the show started,Cosima had no say in how the producers proceeded with the show.

I dont need to repeat it cos Gerry has already said what has happened.

Its a shame that there are so many small minded people, especially Karen Goh who posted on here. If you have nothing mature to say karen, dont say it at all. Grow up. I actually feel sorry for you Using swear words to get your point across, real mature you are..

Christy-lee » 5 November, 2003 2:53 PM

Here here, Cosima, Comsima who???? When the going gets tough, the tough keep going. If she is gonna be a success she's got to cut it with the big boys. She is yesterdays news, if she reappears, as far a I concerned she will have to prove herself all over again. Go you Guys, both have battled the stress and workload, and both will be a success regardless.

keza » 5 November, 2003 10:09 PM

Like it really matters that Cosima is gone....if she had gotten thru it would just have ment we would see someone different get blown out of the compeition by the amazing awesome inspiring heaven sent voice of Guy Sebastian. He is possibly the greatest singing talent i have heard in a long time, and he is only going to improve as he learns to fully harness his amazing vocal abilities. Whether it was to be Cosima or Shannon...does it matter? Everyone knows that Guy is the true story of this competition....so vote for him, not shannon becos u think he is a 'spunk'. Cosima...good luck....but u never stood a chance anyway.

Jaimz » 6 November, 2003 12:27 AM

I feel for Cosima. I really do. One for her throat to be affected the way it has been and two for her to have to withdraw on stage live. That must have been incredibly hard for her emotionally. I admire her and her talent. It was so obvious that Guy and Shannon had no idea and I was just stunned when I saw her step forward and say her goodbyes. So sad :( I wish every happiness and success in the future as I know she has a great future in the recording business and show business

hey I want your opinions Iam doing a HSC assessment on how australian idol potrays multicultural society and was wondering if u could share your views help me find articles help!! i need help so if u can thanx

philly » 6 November, 2003 5:40 PM

Congratulations to Cosima on all her achievements since AI began. You have proved yourself beyond doubt and worked hard to evolve with your music & performance.

It concerns me that so many people who are cynical and critical, probably have the least experience in what it means to be in the position the AI competitors have been in; certainly no bed of roses and definitely a lot of hard work. Having been involved with the running of local Eisteddfod competitions since 1997, I know there is so much more behind the scenes than what most people would be aware of, and also what different adjudicators look for in performances.

As for singing with damaged vocal chords, the only thing she could have done was withdraw or risk permanent damage. I have seen this happen to some friends with great voices and seen the destructive effect that it has on them. Any qualified Music teacher would be well aware how critical it is to preserve and protect damaged vocal chords, and how serious the development of nodules on the vocal chords is for a singer.

Good luck with your future Cosima - you deserve it! As for the armchair critics, please think before you speak - "walk a mile in the other person's shoes" first!

Cosima has a great voice and I think she's considering the long run, which is wise and noble.

jenn » 7 November, 2003 1:34 PM

I think Cosima may have wanted to pull out earlier but her fans kept her going . Perhaps she would not have minded if less people had voted for her every week. She was always surprised that she was able to stay for another one. I have watched her past performances over again and her voice had been getting worse unfortunately, but I loved her anyway! I must have voted for her about fifty times on Monday, and I will buy any album she records! It is such a shame that she will not be there until the end, but hopefully she will be able to sing her song from the AI CD at the Grand Finale!

Rowena » 8 November, 2003 9:58 PM

Dear Cosima, What a heart wrenching decision to make. As my husband is a singer and he has a friend with the same problem he understands the dilemma you were in. You actually brought tears to his eyes and he is not a man who easily cries.Thank you for your outstanding performances over the last weeks and hope to see you performing in the near future. Chin up and keep well.

Linda » 9 November, 2003 1:48 PM

i think everyone should get over what happened, she did what she had to do and thats it!i dont know why everyone keeps talking about what should have happened when it has already happened......i feel sorry for cosima but i think it was her time to go any way!!!

YOU RULE COSIMA
BYE hope to write somthin soon.

Tamara » 13 November, 2003 12:03 PM

i think GUY should really win this. he has got the whole package. he plays instruments, performs remarkably well and has a voice from heaven. it makes anyone melt. if the voting is based on talent, then guy should win. his "cutie-ness" is just a bonus. and since there is going to be a world idol, i think it would be good for the world to hear what talent we have with - GUY.
so start ur voting for him!

Charmagne » 15 November, 2003 4:51 PM

Cosima does have a fantastic voice and i wish her all the best & if/when she does return to the music scene I just hope she doesn't rush in to it to quickly. I hope Cosima's first song is a great one, not a good one. First impressions last & if her 1st song is a number 1 she's halfway there. There is a difference between writing a great song and then writing a number 1 hit. The great wordy songs that actually mean something can wait, just sing some chat-topping-crap with little meaning like ‘Crazy in love' to start with. Then u can sing just about anything and people will still buy it. By the way loved your version of Delta's Predictable. More aggressive sounding suits the song.

People who don't sing ,just don't fully understand what Cosima went through. The throat is a very delicate instrument to a singer, and when it is damaged, it can break even the best of singers. If Kenny G played his Saxophone with a faulty reed, his performance is useless, and a reed is just a 'fine' piece of wood, nothing more than that, but what a difference it makes. Australia hasn't seen the best of Cosima since 'My Heart Will Go On'. What a performance that was! I became her biggest fan that evening. She has such a rich sweet voice one moment, then the voice of a laser-beam the next. You may compare Cosima to her Celine Dion display, but I think she's better. I have a soft spot for female singers, so I'm not bagging Celine, but I think Cosima has the best female voice I think I've ever heard. For a voice to slowly deteriorate over 6 weeks, and to finish 3rd is an outstanding effort. The world will enjoy listening to all of her albums for years!

Brad » 22 November, 2003 2:58 PM

cosima you rule i hope u can sing soon

Guy Sabastian!
Right from the start his voice raised me up from my chair, I got up with excitment & said he is our Australian Idol, I have to take a deep breathe as I cry of excitment to see Australia have such a wonderful talent in Guy Sabastian & I think the world will go crazy for him,I know I speak for many Australians, go Guy am so proud of you as your family would be & all Australians how can we not wish you all the very, very best!
I am also looking forward to the 2004 Australian Idol I can't get enough & Guy you will be up there for a very long time Congratulations love you heaps & what a beautiful gift you have.

Look everyone - can you all just stop your criticism and respect the fact that these are the people who tried their best to get to the top. Everyone that tried out had a dream, most of those people got rejected, with harsh comments - did you say a thing about that? No, offcourse not. It's only when it become controversy over something Dicko or Mark has said is it that people give a damn. You only believe what you see, and what you hear. Take the time to actually listen to these people, and respect the dreams that they have. Dont put down Cosima, encourage her to get back to the top so she can share her voice with the world. Yes, go guy sebastian for winning, and may he have all the fame and fortune he deserves, but dont pay out on the other people that helped him on the way. Shannon, what a fantastic singer he is - and such a fantastic personality to go along side. Where is he's due credit? I personally think he is absolutely brilliant, and definetly deserves a contract. So dont put down Cosima, because of her withdrawl - it wasnt her fault. Have a heart, and think about other's before you start putting them down.

Hey, Cos has a great voice, but I still think Guy is the best and deserved to win. Good luck to Cosima and I hope her voice gets better soon. Congratulations to Guy and his album, I already have it and it sounds great! I can't wait for Cosima to release an album so I can buy it!

I feel sorry for all the people bagging out Cos, I think its really sad that they could speak about someone like that when they don't even know them! If you don't like her style thats fine but you don't have to put down someone for trying to achieve their dreams, I don't see any of you singing on Australian Idol, one of the most watched shows in Australia, so I think you should about what you are saying before you type it on a site that so many people are going to see!

Good luck to both Guy and Cosima for the future.

All my love and prayers to both awsome singers
